An 82-year-old Florida nursing home resident who had maggots in one of his eyes has died, Local6.com reported.
In addition to the maggots, Anthony Digiannurio, of Deltona, Fla., was found with an infected breathing tube, a partially inserted catheter and bed sores when he was taken to Florida Hospital DeLand from the University Center West nursing home in November, according to the report.

According to a DeLand police report released in November, a representative from University Center West said that the man had constant care from multiple hospice workers and two certified nursing aides at the nursing home.

Officials from the state Department of Children and Families were investigating the incident.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has found 19 deficiencies at the facility since June 2006.

WTH!! this man died an aweful death...obviously nobody in his family was visiting him or they would have noticed these deplorable conditions. Where were the hospice workers and the CNA's?? This man was basically psuhed in a corner and left to die. OMG, I am so freaking angry right now!:furious:

Oh my! What makes it so easy for the elderly to be abused and forgotten this way. I just can't believe that no one in that nursing home saw this!

So sad for this man and his needless suffering.

This is awful, and there is no excuse for it whatsoever. That poor man! I hope he was not fully aware of surroundings, for I would hate to think he lived through that hell realizing what was happening to him. I hope that place is shut down!

I can assure you that he would have never been in that shape if 2 nursing aides and hospice workers were caring for him.
Whoever said that is lying.:furious:

I agree this is sickening and this poor man suffered. Things like this do not happen in a day or two so I have to think that whoever was responsible for his care was severely inadequate. I'd also like to know how long it had been since any family members visited him. I can not stress enough how important it is for family to be involved when a loved one is in any type of care facility, IMO people who have involved family do get better care!!
Until we as a country put more importance in providing care to the disabled and elderly things like this will continue to happen. I don't understand why so many think it is not important since any one of us can end up being placed into a nursing home. We should be demanding skilled workers who are paid a decent wage.

In our family, we take care of our elderly relatives.( and an elderly neighbor!) I wish more families would do this.

Well in many families, they don't have an RN on call or a Doctor to tend to a sick person in the home and offer "respite" care and do the necessary care that only an RN and Doctor could do.

That is why some people do end up in nursing homes. Others end up in retirement villas, travel, take a part time job. Others are too ill to be home. They need medical care. Go if someone takes care of an elderly person, great, but if you are taking care of an elderly person and not tending to their immediate medical needs, then you are not doing a favor to anyone.

This man was in need of medical care and "compassionate" treatment from the facility, which was not forthcoming. They abused and neglected him terribly. But he was not where he was because he was in "good heath" so that he could live with family and be taken care of 24/7.

Some people are emotionally and financially able to care for someone 24/7 others need to earn a living for their families.

When the time comes, you bet that a nursing home is where I would want to be, rather then burden my children with my care when they have their bills and families to look after. Again, our children come before us and always will come before us.

This nursing home took money from this man so he could die like that? Death with dignity, huh-this license should have been pulled when the man was found...what is going on at the facility now I wonder?

It gets better-facilities that accept Medicare have to pass an annual evaluation. The latest data on University West indicated that there were 18 health deficiencies (substandard care indications like pressure sores, neglect etc) in a facility that houses just 50 patients.

What a horrible way to die. How could anyone allow this to happen? It breaks my heart. No, his condition didn't happen over night. It sounds like no one was taking care of him and that person speaking for the nursing home is a liar. Common sense tells you that he wasn't being taken care of. Maggots in his eyes? My God!!! This story truly is heartbreaking and that nursing home should be shut down. Probably some big fat cat running it that makes a million dollars a year or more. S.O.B.

This is horrible, i hope every single last one of those in charge of his "care" are sent to prison for long terms. They should suffer as this poor man did. No one deserves to die like that, especially in what is to be the golden years of one's life.

I thought, surely, upon reading this post that it was the same as this one just posted in our paper tonight:

So there are two. That is two too many.

Children, elderly, special needs. This is how our country takes care of people who need us most. So, so sad.
