LOS ANGELES (AP) — A gunman fired into a crowd of children and adults at a South Los Angeles bus stop Wednesday, wounding eight, authorities said. Three girls, ages 10 to 12, and a woman were in critical condition.
The gunman ran away, and streets in the area were shut down as numerous police officers rushed in.
Ezequiel Cornejo, 23, a tire mechanic, said he heard about 10 gunshots, probably from a handgun, just after neighborhood schools let out.
"After that I saw a little girl running, she was running back to the school, she was holding her arm," he said.
The shooting occurred around 3:15 p.m. at Central and Vernon avenues. Two of the victims ran away and were found wounded outside a nearby middle school, police Officer Sara Faden said.
The critically wounded were a 10-year-old girl, an 11-year-old girl, a 12-year-old girl and a 49-year-old woman, said Fire Department spokeswoman d'Lisa Davies.
A 12-year-old girl, a 14-year-old boy and two men, ages 48 and 68, had minor injuries.

This is just a random shooting? How awful! I'm hoping there won't be any deaths, although "critically wounded" isn't a good sign. :(

Thanks for posting this! I'm not seeing the massive manhunt going on like you would expect in a case like this. Five kids!

I just checked for updates....none. Very little is being said.

Five children and three adults were shot Wednesday afternoon by a gunman who opened fire at a busy South Los Angeles bus stop minutes after classes were dismissed at a nearby school.
A man shoots repeatedly into a crowd at Central and Vernon avenues, police say. Two people are critically wounded but are expected to survive.
In a scene of chaos that authorities were still trying to piece together, witnesses described a gunman who seemingly appeared from nowhere and began spraying the crowd indiscriminately. As bystanders dived to the ground, some adults swept up children from the path of gunfire.

Tomasa Gutierrez, 32, had just gotten off a bus and was walking among dozens of students near Vernon and Central avenues when she heard a volley of shots. A girl in front of her collapsed in her arms, wounded.

She scooped up the girl and rushed her back to nearby George Washington Carver Middle School, Gutierrez said.

"It was a little girl," she said. "I had her in my arms until the paramedics came."

They are still searching for the gunmen. Some witnesses say the guy stepped off a bus and just started shooting. Others say two men were arguing at a Jack In The Box and one of them pulled out the weapon. Seems like LE believes the man was aiming for a specific person, but kept firing into the crowd. Just wonderful.http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=4356769

I hope they catch this shooter today. Is this an area where gang activities occur? Is it an area where there might be security cameras around?

Gang member arrested in bus stop shooting

Police have arrested a gang member they say is responsible for Wednesday's shooting at a crowded bus stop in South Los Angeles that left five children and three adults wounded.

The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, is a member of the 48th Street Crips and over the last few months has been trying to boost his reputation in the neighborhood as an enforcer, police said Surveillance videos from nearby businesses show a man trying to shoot at least one person who dodged in and out of pedestrians on the sidewalk, said Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Sergio Diaz.

The shooting took place in front of scores of witnesses, many of them students who were on their way home from George Washington Carver Middle School.

We just had a gang shooting in a city SE of Cleveland that killed a lovely young woman and now it's all "Don't snitch" time. :( I wish we could lock up all these gang members just for wearing their colors and throw away the key.

I saw his aunt on TV tonight. She said he couldn;t have done it because he was outside walking around, where as if he had done it he would have been hiding. She feels he is being racially profiled as the killer.
