13 March 08

A California woman is asking the public for help in locating her missing son on the Big Island.

Willie Dennis Eriksson, 42, was living on Kaiwiki Road north of Hilo, but family and friends say they have not seen him or heard from him since he disappeared on Nov. 7. Eriksson was last seen getting into a vehicle that evening at a store in Mountain View.

Eriksson is a carpenter and a surfer originally from Malibu, Calif., who had been living on the Big Island for about a year. He had been working temporarily harvesting trees in the Kaiwiki area, and was healthy except for an old back injury, according to his mother Anna-Greta Eriksson.

She said she has been on the Big Island looking for her son since January.

Willie Dennis Eriksson is Caucasian, 5 feet 9 inches tall, and about 165 pounds. He has blue eyes, short gray or partially gray hair and a goatee.

A police spokeswoman said investigators have not ruled out foul play, and the case is being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Section of the Big Island police department.

Police ask anyone with information on his whereabouts to call the Police Department's non-emergency number at 935-3311. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call CrimeStoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All CrimeStoppers information is kept confidential.

Willie Dennis Eriksson of Hilo is described as Caucasian, 5-foot-9, 165 pounds with blue eyes, short gray or partially graying hair and a goatee.
He has a scar on his chest from childhood heart surgery and two tattoos -- one of the grim reaper on his right forearm, and a girl with a surfboard on one calf muscle.
Eriksson was last seen during the evening of Nov. 7, 2007, at Hirano Store in Glenwood. He was 42 at the time.
Eriksson's mother, Anna-Greta Eriksson of Malibu, Calif., said her son is of Italian and Swedish decent and is a Swedish citizen. He is the son of the late jazz saxophonist Sal Nistico. Although police could trace no employment, Ms. Eriksson said her son is a long-time carpenter.
"I don't want to fear the worst because it hurts too much," she said.
Anna-Greta Eriksson said that police had hoped to administer polygraph tests to several of Eriksson's acquaintances, but all refused through their attorneys.
"Why would somebody refuse a lie detector test if they had nothing to hide?" she asked. Although not prohibited by statute in Hawaii, the state's courts have so far rejected polygraph results on the basis of unreliability.
Eriksson said that anyone with leads on her son's whereabouts can call her directly at (310) 359-2950
Anyone with information on any of these missing persons is asked to call Detective Kelley Matsumoto at 961-2380 or the police non-emergency line at 935-3311. Those who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.
