Twenty-five feet below ground in Vancouver, searchers Wednesday found human remains possibly belonging to a mentally ill man vanished since October.

The remains haven't been positively identified, but police say they think they might solve the mystery of James L. Moore, 47, a transient reported missing by relatives Nov. 24.

"Based on where we found the remains, it's a very strong possibility that it's going to be Mr. Moore, " said Detective Patrick Kennedy, a Vancouver Police Department spokesman.

City workers used heavy equipment to remove dirt around some tunnels. About 3:30 p.m. they found the remains under shoring materials and dirt in a vertical shaft at least 25 feet deep. Also found were clothing, tools, buckets, flashlights and a water jug.

Moore had been known to dig deep tunnels to search for treasure. After looking into the case for months, detectives came to believe that he might have been buried in one of his own tunnels near State Route 500 and St. John's Road.

It was not immediately clear what killed the man in the tunnel. An autopsy and DNA tests were planned, Kennedy said.
