WARDSBORO — A woman apparently intent on suicide waded into a brook carrying her 6-year-old daughter, purposely eluding the grasp of a would-be rescuer before being swept downriver, police said.

Both mother and child died, and a search continued Sunday for the woman’s 2½-year-old daughter, who was missing.

“For whatever reason, it was a deliberate action,” said Vermont State Police Capt. David Covell.

Nicole Waring, 40, of Wolcott, was reported missing early Saturday after she disappeared from her parents’ Wardsboro house with the two girls, according to Vermont State Police.


A search for 2½-year-old, who is named Grace, was suspended Saturday night and resumed Sunday, with police, firefighters and game wardens searching both the banks of the brook and nearby woods.

It would be a wonderful miracle if the 2 yr old is found alive, but I doubt it at this point. I wonder what was going on in her life that she thought this was the answer? :(

I feel really sorry for that sargeant that tried to reach her and had to watch her deliberately push away w/the child in her arms to her death, basically. That will be something he probably won't forget in his lifetime.
