According to Houston television station KHOU, an official stopped Marche Taylor from entering the ballroom at a Houston-area hotel (http://www.wsbtv.com/education/16240201/detail.html#). Taylor was told the dress violated the school dress code.
"She shook her head, she was like you are not getting into this prom," Taylor told the television station. "We were arguing back and forth because I wanted to know why I can't get into my prom."
Madison High School Principal Aubrey Taylor said the dress was inappropriate and violated the rules.

I thought the dress was inappropriate as well, but that's the fat jealous lady in me talking.
It's not like it's offensive in this day and age. She's got it, she was flaunting it, that's all.

Most public places would. It wasn't indecent exposure, though, so no law would prohibit it. I will admit it's tasteless, but she did look cute in it.

I wouldn't allow my daughter to wear that to her prom.

Cute, but (IMO) not particularily classy, much as she held her head high. :twocents: I guess I can be shallow and petty...

I think the gown was a bit much but similar to other prom gowns I have seen over the past few years ...
My only question is do they enforce this at all after school events .. like football games etc??
Because I have been to plenty and typically in school dress code is not enforced at after school events...
Does this school allow their band for example to raise money doing car washes and if so are the girls wearing bikini's as I so often see??
Or even bikini tops with little shorts??
If they are then it needs to be all or not enforced at after school events at all.

But again the issue is how the school enforces the dress code after school hours.
But again the issue is how the school enforces the dress code after school hours.
For things like Prom and Graduation they publish the dress code, what is expected of the students well beforehand. Sometimes you even have to sign a contract promising to follow the dress code before they hand you your tickets. I had to.

The dress was VERY innappropriate, and I believe she knew that....but did she deserve to be cuffed? No.
UNLESS she made a huge scene and refused to leave...then, it may be understandable...
She had to have known she was showing too much skin....
In my high school tank tops were not allowed...and skirts/shorts had to come at least 2 inches past your longest (middle) finger with your hands straight down your side...and they WOULD measure....and you would be sent home or have to have a parent bring proper clothing...
I know they measured 'cause I myself had to do it once.
Actually what I said earlier about the tank tops...it's not only in high school here. 5 yrs ago I sent my daughter to school in a tank top...she was in freaking pre-k....and a note was sent home for me not to dress her in that again...
Oh my that suit was adorable...it was a light blue tank top w/ same colored capris and a same colored bandana...she looked so absolutely adorable. But I didn't dress her in it again, well, for school anyway.

The thing is that this was a school event, therefore the kids should act and DRESS appropriately. Her dress was outlandish, and I've seen some pretty revealing prom dresses lately. I have no doubt that if she wore this to a sporting event held at the school, she's still be turned away.
This girl wanted attention and she is definately getting it.

Well, more the point I was hinting at was, it was a tiny podunk town, in 1991, and I had to sign a contract agreeing to go by the dress code and follow the provisos they put on who could escort me to the Prom also. I'm surprised to hear some schools *don't* do this now, since my school did back then, and it's often about ten years behind on some things. (Example: We could sing hymns as part of our school program when I was in High School choir.)
Podunk = As of the census of 2000, there were 2,975 people, 1,252 households, and 785 families in the city.

She knew what she was doing. There is no way she couldn't have expected to be refused entry in that dress. Her other complaint is that even after she tried to cover up that they wouldn't let her in ... well ... DUH ... all she wanted to do was wrap the little gold train around her. Just an invitation for a WARDROBE MALFUNCTION.

You're warned, regardless....
She HAD to have put up some kind of fight for her to be put in cuffs...School chaperones would NOT have automatically called the cops to have her put in cuffes...there HAD to have been SOME kinda scene made.

It's too bad the girl didn't make the dress to cover more and her night wouldn't have been ruined, unless she actually wanted this to happen for some reason. She's really pretty and I don't think she looked slutty, just not right for the prom. She should wear it to the Polynesian Islands.

I have seen hookers with more clothes on! I guess her mom approved of it.
It is more akin to beachwear. I don't think a bikini top and a sarong should be considered appropriate attire for any prom. It might have worked had she tied it around her neck and wore it flowing instead of showing tho. The problem wasn't the sarong actually, but the top and the skin showing. She could have "dropped out" one of those puppies easily on the dance floor!!

She could very easily have taken this same design and cut it so that her boobs would remain covered if she danced and the "skirt"would be more than 1/4" longer than her crotch. I don't think she was trying for classy - not while wearing flip flops.
I agree she had to to have created a scene - throwing on handcuffs is hardly the first reaction of educators who see kids push the limits every day.

The dress just screams "Look at me" It's all about getting attention and looks like this girl wanted a whole lot of attention... the belle of the ball in a twisted kind of way. Sad really.
When I was finishing highschool it was more about who got to have their dresses made rather than have to buy off the rack, taxi or limo, and who all was going to Hawaii. (My Grandma splurged for Hawaii for good grades, I worked my but off to help pay for the Rolls and my best friend helped make one of my dresses so I was sort of right in the middle:))
Would love to hear more grad/prom stories:woohoo:

She did look cute, but she should save the dress for a Carribbean cruise or a trip to Hawaii.

This is the funniest thread in a while..
I definately without a doubt think that the dress is innappropriate for any occasion(besides the beach) for a girl this age.
I also don't think it helped, with her tattoo showing and her saying they said she didn't have any underwear on...I don't even want to know how they came to that conclusion.
I also agree she probably made a big huge scene, and got loud and ignorant. I stand by the schools decision of not letting her in dressed like that. I also don't think the school should be criticised for someone calling the police on her. Who knows who called the cops, (could be a bystander or parent standing by) also she could have easily went home and put a sweater or tank top even on, and wrapped the thing she is dragging behind her around her waist.
Well then, if this is her Junior prom, I've got the perfect dress (http://www.kbpc.net/ghetto/ghetto_prom_dress.jpg) for the Senior prom.

There were loads of things she could have done to avoid the situation and be able to attend her prom. she chose to make a hue and cry to a telly station. this ain't gonna be no full 15 minutes of fame, darling.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Tacky Tacky Tacky! What a cute girl unfortunately that dress doesn't say much about her character. Parents need to teach their daughters to respect themselves or nobody else will..that's all i'm sayin!

She made this dress herself.
She got cuffed for this!? It covers up way more than a bikini! Maybe she'll get a deal to design clothes with all this newfound celebrity.

Maybe she will.
i think they wouldn't have accepted her at the prom in a bikini, though.

I have to say that i am probably about as conservative as they come. There is no way my girls would be allowed to wear that.
Still, I do have to give her credit for designing the dress. The modern runways would applaud the style and finish.
Also, I think that without the train, I wouldn't even bat my eyes if I saw her wearing that at the beach with a bikini under it. I would then think she found a cute bikini cover.
I think that my above comments are irrelevant to teh situation. This is not prom attire. It sounds like she broke school rules and didn't like being told that she couldn't attend prom in that dress. I think that was the right call. I give her 5 minutes of dancing before she experiences a "wardrobe malfunction". I agree that there had to be more to the story before she was arrested. I'd imagine she had quite an attitude that lead to problems.

Aparently this girl. That's what we should call her dress. A swimsuit with a train. Pretty "fancy" if you ask me.

This is what happens when kids imitate Hollywood. If there are no role models at home, what can we expect?

I don't think she got cuffed for designing or wearing a dress. I think she got cuffed because when she was told to leave she made some sort of scene.

I do remember restrictions on who could escort you during one school prom.
We eliminated that issue by boycotting the school prom. Our parents all pitched in and rented the Banquet Hall at the country club and hired a caterer and a DJ and bought decorations. Some of the teachers even came and chaperoned.
