Weleetka case not progressing

Associated Press - July 8, 2008 12:35 AM ET
WELEETKA, Okla. (AP) - One month after two girls were shot to death on a rural Okfuskee County road, investigators don't appear to be much closer to solving the crime than they were the day it happened.
No arrests have been made. No suspects have been identified. No motive has been determined. And a sketch of a mystery man who is listed as a "person of interest" has produced hundreds of leads but no notable results.

An Oklahoma community is on edge as investigators comb through evidence in the murders of two young girls.

The town of Weleetka, some residents say they remember... is peaceful, positive, and proud.

2NEWS Chief Meteorologist Dan Threlkeld dusted off his old yearbook and wondered if his former classmates feel the same way.

"I wanted my kids to grow up in a small town because I did. It was always a positive experience. It was always about school, band practice, football games, and dragging main."

A message scrawled on a cross at a roadside memorial for two slain girls was likely written by pranksters and isn’t being treated as a serious lead, an official said.

A vandal wrote “something to the effect of ‘you’ll never catch me,’ ” Jessica Brown, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, said Wednesday.

Cops Release 911 Tape In Murder Of 2 Girls

..............................snip................ ......

Several motives have been explored, including a random thrill killing, attempted abduction, a case of mistaken identity and the possibility that the girls happened upon a crime in progress.

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Agent Ben Rosser has said officials suspect a local person was involved because the killings occurred in such an isolated area. Rosser said that nothing is being ruled out but that there is no indication family or friends were involved.

Two Weleetka girls will not be going back to school Thursday, but their classmates plan to keep their memory alive.

13-year old Taylor Placker and 11-year old Skyla Whitacker were found shot to death on a rural road near Weleetka.

It happened about two months ago.

Students, faculty, and staff at Graham Elementary School will wear bracelet's in purple and green, the girls favorite colors.

A plaque donated by their families will also help keep their memory strong.

Taylor's father will have her cheerleading uniform framed, and hopes that everyone will keep searching for clues in the case.

The investigation is one of the most intensive in the agency's history.

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation has so far spent more than 10,000 man hours investigating the June slayings of two young girls near Weleetka.

And those hours, according to OSBI spokeswoman Jessica Brown, don't include the untiring efforts of federal agents, sheriff's deputies and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol working the case.

Given the hundreds of leads tracked and scores of people questioned in the Weleetka murders, Brown said this case is among the most intensive investigations ever handled by the OSBI.

WELEETKA — More than three dozen guns from the Weleetka area were test fired over the weekend as authorities worked to narrow their leads into the June 8 slayings of two girls north of town.

Jessica Brown, spokeswoman for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, said some 60 letters were sent out to registered owners of .40-caliber handguns, asking them to voluntarily submit their weapons for testing on Saturday and Sunday at the Okfuskee County Courthouse at Okemah.

Brown said 40 of those owners showed up with their guns, which were fired outside the courthouse.

She said about five owners contacted the OSBI to say they no longer owned the weapons, although they did provide the names of the new owners.

“We’ll be checking on them,” Brown said, as well as the 15 or so registered gun owners who did not show up for the test firings.

The fact that the OSBI is looking for a .40-cailber handgun is the newest revelation into the murders of Skyla Jade Whitaker, 11, and Taylor Paschal-Placker, 13.

Both were shot several times and left for dead on County Line Road, about four miles northeast of Weleetka.

OSBI agents went to gun dealers and pawnshops to create a list of .40-caliber Glock owners.

WELEETKA — Authorities working to narrow their leads in the June 8 shooting deaths of two girls used old-fashioned legwork to come up with a list of area gun owners with .40-caliber pistols, one of two weapons used in the slayings.

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents knew the caliber of the guns used in the killings, so they merely checked with area gun dealers and pawnshops to determine who had bought or recently pawned .40-caliber Glocks.

"It's a typical procedure of any investigation" involving a gun, according to Jessica Brown, spokeswoman for the OSBI.

"It's a process of elimination," she said, noting that the tested weapons may have been loaned out by the owners or someone else may have had access to the guns.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Three men who have come under suspicion in the fatal shootings of two Weleetka girls testified Wednesday before the multicounty grand jury, according to a published report.

“I just wish they would catch whoever done it so they would leave me alone,” one witness, Toney Kelough, told The Oklahoman in a story for Thursday editions. “I’ve told them the same thing over and over again.”

Kelough, 30, who is scheduled to return for testimony on Thursday, was questioned along with 18-year-old Dustyn Dailey and Mike Gaddy, 19, about the June 8 shootings of Skyla Whitaker, 11, and Taylor Paschal-Placker, 13, The Oklahoman reported.

A man and woman believed to be witnesses in the fatal shootings of two Weleetka girls arrived at the Oklahoma County Courthouse at 11:30 a.m.

Wearing shackles, the pair was escorted under guard to the second day of multicounty grand jury proceedings on the case.

They are the fourth and fifth witnesses to testify on the matter before the grand jury. Three other men who are under suspicion in the fatal shooting of 13-year-old Taylor Placker and 11-year-old Skyla Whitaker testified Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the grand jury heard testimony from Dustyn Dailey, 18; Mike Gaddy, 19; and Toney Kelough, 30. Kelough, who said he was with his girlfriend at the time of the shootings, returned Thursday morning for about an hour before the grand jury. He had no further comment after telling The Oklahoman Wednesday that he had nothing to do with the shootings.

Thanks for the post GetSmart, I was hoping they had more than we knew in this case. It is not looking good, but maybe the bill board will provide more info. I believe this crime was local, and I know the girls were young, but kids will be kids and I don't think we know the real story of their daily lives. I don't mean to be speaking badly of either of these girls or their families, but I do think some people who lead sheltered lives, may not realize that others do not. JMO May have been many things going on with the girls that we are not hearing.

JMO May have been many things going on with the girls that we are not hearing.I understand exactly what you are saying,Zoo.I appreciate your honest and straightforward opinion.

In Their Footsteps: A Walk In Weleetka

http://www.ktul.com/news/stories/1108/568263.html

Weleetka - This weekend two young murder victims who were gunned down exactly five months ago on a rural road were honored.

Taylor Placker and Skyla Whitaker were killed in Weleetka back in June, but even in death these fallen angels have left quite a legacy.

"We all met on-line," said Lora.

Lora traveled all the way from Canada. Rich from Ohio.

"I've always had a special place in my heart for people who leave this world before they really should," said Rich.

In fact, most of these people have never even been to Oklahoma before, but gathered this weekend for one very important reason to honor two young girls who were shot to death in cold blood.

"I'm from Lexington, Texas, between Austin and College Station," said Mary. Mary just had to see the memorial for herself.

"I was just so touched by what happened these are our girls, our children, the children of our hearts," explained Mary.
All of those gathered in Weleetka me in an on-line forum devoted to unsolved cases. They bonded over this one. Then came the idea to meet.

The group traveled the same road the two victims traveled before they were shot. It is their way to bring honor and sense of healing, while hoping someday someone will be caught.

"They didn't deserve to die out here. We want people to know that we haven't forgotten them and will always remember them," said Lora.

While several people have been brought in for questioning, no arrests have been made in the case.

CNN has the story on their homepage today!

http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/11/11/...ml#cnnSTCVideo (http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/11/11/grace.coldcase.oklahoma/index.html#cnnSTCVideo)

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Two young girls, best friends, were found shot to death five months ago on the side of a dirt road not far from their homes in the small rural town of Weleetka, Oklahoma. Taylor Paschal-Placker, 13, left, and Skyla Jade Whittaker, 11, were shot with two weapons, police say. Police in Weleetka say there hasn't been a murder in town in more than 20 years. A double homicide involving two children is beyond anything Weleetka's 1,084 residents have experienced.
