View Full Version : Websleuths is moving to a new server!

WS Admin

As you have probably noticed, Websleuths has become much busier recently. Just a couple months ago we often had less than 100 people reading, now we're over 400 most of the day and had a new high of 683 people yesterday. Thanks to all of you for making the site increasingly popular!

As the admin around here who handles most of the technical issues, I'm happy to announce that Websleuths - along with Tricia's other sites - will be moving to a shiny new server in the next few days. It's up and running right now and we're working on the details to transfer things over with as little interruption as possible. There is nothing you need to do - we'll put up an announcement and there may be a time during the transfer when the site will be down briefly. If all goes well the only way you will know is that the site comes up faster!

Hi Adnoid,

Newbie question, so here goes: I am very new to Websleuths, and am working on a book of unsolved (cold case) crimes. How do I create a new post regarding my project, and which category (or categories) do you suggest I post under -- can I post under more than one?

Many thanks,

Robert

From the point of view of our wonderful members and guests, all you will notice (unless I screw up) is that it will be faster and won't bog down as much when there's breaking news. That's it. We just wanted to make the announcement in case there is a problem, we don't want people to think it's something on their end.

Well if you'd tell Tricia to stop charming the socks off of radio personalities and intriguing the world with mysterious tales of our special place, then we wouldn't be so darned busy!

JK of course. You are all doing a fantastic job of keeping up with the tremendous growth. So proud to be a part of it! Congrats on the new server.

Thanks! I just moved the site for her business to the new server:

www.justiceforallspeakers.com

Just a couple of static pages, so it should load up right now!

(Watch you catch me in the middle of moving it to a new IP on the server & you get the default Apache page...)

Last time we updated the board software I waited until there were a low number of users (60 or so) on line, now I cannot remember the last time it dropped below 200 and it's pretty much 500 or more all day long. So we're going to have to interrupt some stuff.

I also saw over 300 on Caylee's forum at one point.

The tough part know is figuring out when to schedule the expected 3 hours it will take to transfer all the information from the current server (in Houston) to the new server (in Dallas). When we updated the vBulletin software we were off line for 45 minutes and the natives got quite restless.

There is an alternate board somewhere that folks go to talk when WS is offline (not chat) - I'll see if I can get a link.

As mentioned by the ever graceful Ciara, we suggest using the "keep me logged in" box.

If you do not do so, the cookies set to keep track of who you are and where you are reading will expire after 15 minutes of inactivity. So if you are reading a long thread and don't refresh the screen, you will be logged out. When the board is very busy - like it is today - that becomes more likely.

You can always use the "Log Out" button when you are done to clear all your cookies.

The Planet's automated in-house transfer of Websleuths to the new server didn't work as expected this morning, so we brought the site back online on the old server while they work on the problem.

This is why we make a full backup first. Nothing has been lost but some time.

As soon as we know that the communication issue has been fixed we'll put up another notice.

Thank you for your patience.

You should know by now that I am a horribly evil person, and the main reason we are doing this is to keep the Australians out. And don't even get me started on the Kiwis and their sheep.

It should be no trouble for you. If you tell me who your ISP is I'll see if they are one that (technical) people say do not follow the guidelines on when to look to see if a site has changed IP address. If they are naughty this way, the worst case it that the regular link would not work for you for a day or so, but the one I posted in the announcement will.

What's wrong with sheep Adnoid?? I'm Kiwi born baaaa...:crazy: anyway, my ISP is Optus. Is this going to be compatible?

It's all compatible. What happens is that right now Websleuths is at one IP address, but the new server is at another. When you type in www.websleuths.com a system called "DNS" looks up the name and gives your computer the IP address - as all the actual connections are done from one IP address to another.

The DNS system is kind of like directory assistance for the phone. Initially your computer has no idea where to find websleuths. It asks the DNS system, and (right now) the DNS system tells it WS is at the IP address of the current server. When we move WS to the new server, we have to let the DNS system know - which I do.

When the DNS system gives your computer the address of a web site, it ALSO passes along some information about how long that address is good (called "Time To Live" or TTL) so that your computer does not ask the same question each time you go to a new page. Normally it's set at around a day. What I do is, when we're planning a move, set the time down to an hour. If the move takes 3 hours, by the time we're done everyone's computer will know it's time to look up the address again and will automagically go to the new server.

The rub is that some large ISPs are rumored to keep their own copies of this information for the use of their customers and to change the valid times in order to reduce network traffic. They deny this, but as people have mentioned when a site changes address those on AOL don't get the new one as quickly as people on smaller ISPs.

Sorry for the long winded answer - it's actually a good deal more complex than this, but that's the general idea. These changes are made centrally and propagate around the world. The system does work, it's a balance between load and traffic vs. accuracy and was designed when the Internet moved at a slower pace. It can take up to 72 hours for changes to be reflected around the world.

Not that it would bother the Kiwis as long as the beer flows.

Thankyou adnoid, hope it is compatible. I have websleuths listed in my favourites and I just click on that and it takes me straight to the forums, that is hopefully how I want it to work when you change servers.

If that does not work

We have a new Delphi forum for Websleuths when the forum is down. Here is the message I posted at Delphi to announce it.

Hi Websleuths.com posters,

We know at some point Websleuths will go down again for repairs or other server issues. When that happens please go to this new delphi Websleuths forum;

We can't keep the trolls out so I will ask you to please ignore them when they post.

If Websleuths is down we will post updates at this new forum

Wow, all that and still not on the new server. Thanks Adnoid for all your hard work!

We'll get there. Since you asked, here's part of what I posted in the admin technical discussion area:

Where the transfer of the WS database was failing every time was the creation of the search index on the posts. This is what allows us to search for words, and pop up a list of threads and/or posts where those words appear. Very very useful. But I was baffled. The index is in place on the old server and works just fine, but since the new server uses a new version of mysql we can't just copy it over, it needs to be recreated from scratch.

Every time a post is made, vBulletin looks at the words in the post. Short words (we have the limit set to 3 characters) are ignored. For the rest of the words the system looks at the word index and, this is what happens:

-If the word has been used before, the system indicates that this post is another place this word can be found;

-If the word has not been used before, the system creates a new index entry for it and adds this post as where it was used. If the word is used again, it's treated as above.

The Oxford English Dictionary - the real one, published as a 20 book set - contains just over 300,000 words, and with variant forms a total of just over 600,000 entries. Studies I have read indicate that an educated person knows about 20,000 distinct words well and uses 2,000 of them in any given week.

So why were our word indexes so big? FFJ, although smaller, has a much smaller index in comparison to the number of posts. At the vBulletin support site nobody reports this problem.

Now, the actual problem that was stopping the move is a "timeout". There is no feedback - no dots printed, no progress bar - while the index is being built. Both servers are in racks of equipment, the old one in Houston and the new one in Dallas. I connect remotely, as do the tech support people at The Planet. The creation of the word indexes occurs about 80% of the way through the transfer, and what we would see is that it would start to create the indexes and sit there - and eventually the remote connection would drop due to lack of activity. We changed the settings on each server so that the server would not drop the connection for inactivity, but we have no control of the routers in between.

Last night, before I went to bed, on a hunch, I duplicated the WS database & stuck it on the test forum. vBulletin has 2 search methods built in: "fulltext" (which we use and is a feature of mysql) and their own search which was developed before mysql had the fulltext search ability and is still available. You can switch between them in the admin control panel. So here is what I did ON THE TEST BOARD:

1) I turned off the "fulltext" search and dropped the indexes it uses;

2) I turned on the vBulletin search but did NOT create the list of words needed to use it.

I then (details omitted) transferred the database to the new server - success, in minutes!

On the new server I then manually created the word indexes. There are two - one on thread titles, the other on post titles AND the post body, corresponding to the two search options available. I tried the first by hand:

mysql> alter table thread add fulltext index (title);
Query OK, 63254 rows affected (4.28 sec)
Records: 63254 Duplicates: 0 Warnings: 0

OK, it only took a little over 4 seconds to go through the titles of over 63,000 threads and make an index of all the words used there. Not so bad. Let's try the posts:

mysql> alter table post add fulltext index (title, pagetext);

After staring at that for about an hour, I knew what was coming - a time out, and everything lost. What I did was run something on top of it that updated the screen every 15 seconds and I went to bed. Either it would fail at some point, or it would work (Karl and Big Tex will see what I did here, I'm happy to explain to anyone else):

[1]+ Stopped mysql
root@ffj2 [/var/lib/mysql]# bg
[1]+ mysql &
root@ffj2 [/var/lib/mysql]# top

In the morning I checked and - it had finished. After running for 3 hours, it had created the index and finished up.

Continued...

PLEASE do not misconstrue the next section. I'm detailing the issue and finding a way to work around it, that's all. No need for anyone to change what they are doing.

The mystery to me is, why did it take so long and create such a huge index? We've got some smart folks, but how many different words can they be using? Even with misspellings and our visitors from so-called English speaking countries that use extra "u"s in their words, and the occasional number...the countdown threads. Every post has a new "word" - a string of characters that is treated like any other word. 320,000 of them, when I looked just now. When first seen, a new index entry is created for it, to find it the next time it's used. But the thing is, it will never be used again.

While we cannot see what is in the indexes done with "fulltext" we can with the vBulletin system. So I started the process to create those indexes on the test database. Yep - indexing all those numbers as search terms. Since it's on the same server as WS and is slowing it down I'm going to stop it, as I've seen enough to know what's happening.

Anyway, having figured it out we can now move WS to the new server. What we'll do is this:

1) Lock the board as before;

2) Make a backup as before;

3) Delete the search indexes - NEW STEP

4) Transfer WS to the new server

Once it's up and running, we'll announce that search is disabled for the time being. This will give us time to plan a strategy for new searches. Worst case is I can recreate the indexes manually on the new server without taking it offline - it will just be God-awful slow for a few hours, but since I now know how to get it to work without babysitting I can write a little program to wait until the load is low in the middle of the night & do it then. But even then, the site and the backups will all be on the new server, so I won't have to transfer them back and forth over and over.

So, I guess this will serve as the announcement that there will be no search capability right after we make the move...

I'm happy when I can push the start button on my laptop and the machine turns on. That is the capacity of my computer knowledge. Seriously, that is the sad, sad truth. Frankly, I think you have the patience of a saint.

Adnoid and Tricia - thanks so much for all the hard work on the enhancements. Your efforts and care are so very much appreciated. I've been here since 2003 and it just keeps getting better and better under Tricia's ownership. I am really proud to be a member here. You are the best.

Quick question, call me stupid, but what does this exactly mean?

we will NOT be updating the DNS records until the process is successfully completed. Once it is, we will give you a direct link to the new server you can use until the DNS changes propagate so that typing in www.websleuths.com takes you to the new site.

Does this mean we will be directed to a new URL? I thought you would automatically re-direct the site so we would keep the same URL and the only difference we'd notice would be improved response time.:waitasec::waitasec::waitasec:

I'm not going to call you stupid - you're not!

We will still be at www.websleuths.com.

DNS is kind of like a phone book for the internet. Right now when you say you want to go to www.websleuths.com, the DNS system tells your computer to go to

http://66.98.176.96/~websleut/

But after we move it will tell your computer to go to

http://67.19.158.169/

(There's nothing there yet. Please don't click on the link to send a message to the webmaster. I've gotten over 8,000 so far.)

The thing is, the new address has to be sent to all the different ISPs around the country and the world so that everyone's computer will go to the new address. So right after we do the change, some people's computers will still have the old address. We're going to put up a link for people who go to the old address to get them directly to the new one, but within a matter of an hour or two after we send in the change just about everyone that types in www.websleuths.com will be sent to the new address and you will not have to even think about it.

And hopefully Karl will be able to set us up with a page that even does that part automatically, saving our members one more click!

Bottom line: Just go to www.websleuths.com and you will end up where you want to, even if it takes an extra click or two for now.

Thanks for the info. So essentially it's migrating the IP addresses and it takes an hour or two fo,r the process to be complete...Is this right?

In a nutshell. And for those who do not want to wait, we'll provide a cheat!

About a week ago we started suggesting to the ISPs that they check the addresses for websleuths.com every hour - normally they check every 4 to 24 hours. However, since this causes them more traffic, sometimes they ignore our suggestions if the suggested interval is less than a day. Usually it's only a problem with the really big ISPs like AOL.

Does your server/thing always have this much trouble?

Tricia

No we don't Bob. We moved to a new server so I doubt if we will have much trouble, if any, again.

Thanks for all the hard work! *otterhighfivesadnoid*

A typically dumb question from me -- can I safely delete the link that was posted before the move for us AOL users? I still have it bookmarked, and the original one works just great.

Me and computers don't speak the same language, so I didn't understand anything beyond AOL user.

Thanks!

I'm getting server busy again. I was already logged in and when I clicked to go to the next page, I got "server is busy" and it took me a few minutes to get back in. It does say there are over 500 people here, but if I look at what forum they are in, it looks like less than 300.

Not that I'm complaining. I love it here and I love that it's free. :clap: Just thought this wasn't supposed to happen. :waitasec:

We're working on it.

We've got over 2.4 million posts. What happened just recently is someone searched for every post containing the word "mother", of which there are over 81,000. Took a minute to find them all...

Fancy searching on such a generic word lol.

Thanks adnoid as I have had Server Busy messages a few more times since my last post.

I'm sorry. Its my fault when I searched for wudge.

No results, and that made me happy!

Why do we keep getting hung up now? I thought the new server could handle the demand to prevent this. Are there other problems now?
