It was later revealed in affidavits submitted by friends of the victim, Nancy Cooper, that the divorce proceeding was put on hold as it interfered with Nancy's submission for a U.S. green card, which was being processed through Brad Cooper's employer, Cisco Systems. Continuance of the divorce action, could have jeopradized Nancy's ability to obtain legal U.S. residency status.
