View Full Version : Sponser the Cheerleaders

Skyla and Taylor's cheerleading teamates don't want to use the same uniforms this year (understandably). Since this is a rural, mostly poor area, not all of the cheerleaders can afford new uniforms SO.....KeyboardPlayer is looking into pricing for sponsering a cheerleader or two, or simply defraying the costs of all the uniforms. Not sure one of the girls would like to be "sponsered" in Skyla and Taylors name so maybe we'll just spread the collected amount evenly among all the cheerleaders?
Stay posted for the information.
We will defray the cost and spread out the $$$ evenly among all of the cheerleaders.

I'd be willing to donate as well...
Is Keyboardplayer a WS member?
I think any monies collected should be distributed evenly among all girls.... IMO.
Nice idea!

Hi everyone, I have been in contact with the secretary of the school, Kim Moore. She informed me that any help we would be willing to give would be most appreciated. There are 6 girls on the cheerleading squad this year, and the new uniforms would cost approximately $100 each.
If anyone wants to send in donations, they can be sent to Wanda Mankin, c/o Graham School, Rt. 1 Box 91B1, Weleetka, OK 74880. Be sure to denote that the money is for the Elementary Cheerleading Fund. Cash is okay, as well as personal checks (make payable to Graham School, and put Elementary Cheerleading Fund on the check).
ArizonaGiGi had first contacted me with this excellent idea. I had asked the school a while back if I could buy a few of those bracelets they were handing out to the students, so I have already sent some money to the school for those (everyone else can do the same, to the same mailing address as listed above); proceeds from the sales of the bracelets go toward the cheerleading fund as well.

Alternatively, if you all think it would be a better idea to collect all the money and send it as one large donation from us here at WS, I would be more than happy to coordinate that (if this is the case I will make sure everyone has my contact information).
Feel free to PM me or e-mail me if there's anything I can do. Cheers all!
Whoa, wait a minute here.
Although good intentions are meant here, why would anyone send money to a middle person, especially one who isn't local?
Those that wish to send money should do so in a safe manner, without exchanging their private information with anyone on a Message Board/Forum.
If anyone wishes to donate monies for the Cheerleaders uniforms send it directly to the school, the mailing address has been posted.

To all... In regard to Tom'sGirl's post, I re-read my previous post, and it would indeed make ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE for anyone not to send donations directly to the school. I was more concerned with getting the information to this forum than actually proofreading what I post (a process I call "stupidity filtering"), so while yes, good intentions were certainly meant, I wish to apologize to the forum for any misconceptions that may have been derived from my post. It has been edited.
Cheers,

Hi KeyboardPlayer
Thanks so much for doing the leg work. We all appreciate it! :blowkiss:
I would love to know what the tally is that Websleuthers are contributing. If anyone doesn't object, I will post the tally here as it grows.
Here's how I would like to do it, unless anyone has a better way of doing it;
Anyone who sends or has already sent in a check to the school as a donation or for bracelets, PM me the amount and I will post it without using your name. It will just be a running tally NO NAMES with the amounts.
I repeat NO NAMES will be posted with the amount. Whether you give a dollar or a hundred dollars, it will all add up and be much appreciated by the girls.
Please post your ideas and opinions about this.

That helps out ALOT. If you pm with amount you donated, I will add it to the tally.

Yesterday I communicated with Ms. Mankin via email. I will not post her email in it's entirety as I did not ask her permission to do so. I will however convey one portion of her email:
Ms. Mankin
We are not soliciting money for these because of the extreme duress and the publicity. However anything anyone wants to give will be greatly appreciated.
Let me add that Ms. Mankin said students earn the money to purchase suits through fund raisers. However in this case we have made an exception and have accepted a couple of donations to help pay for the new uniforms.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
On a personal note, the amount I submit is my own business, has nothing to do with Websleuths, or is it sponsored by Websleuths and I feel asking how much each of us has contributed is inappropriate.

There is no set date, or deadline poco. If you care to donate, the money will be set aside for when new uniforms are purchased.

It's VOLUNTARY - I have no problem telling how much I donated, my name isn't attached publicly, but if you have a problem, then don't say anything. I think this is something each of us can decide for ourselves, And a request is hardly "inappropriate" since it's just that, a request. If somebody asks you a question you don't want to answer, then don't answer it. Your feelings about "appropriate-ness" are just that, your feelings....please allow me (and all of us) as adults determine what is and isn't "appropriate" for us.
I for one would LOVE to know aprox how much was sent for the uniforms from people here who have NO OTHER connection the the school and would not have known about the need without it being posted here. I've half a mind to just send the school a check for $600 and tell them to start shopping - they can use the rest of the money they make this year to buy nice matching shoes and socks for each of the girls this year and save some for future purchases for the girls who's families cannot afford new athletic shoes. And maybe there will be enough for a nice set of new tumbling mats for the gym for practice.

I don't know why you feel the need to be so offensive?
I DID NOT ASK FOR THE AMOUNT - I said IF you PM me I will post it.
I think that the donation info is of interest to other WS'ers. It makes me proud that people on here care enough to want to support the cheerleaders. Not everyone can or wants to give, and that's not the point. The point is that we all care about Taylor and Skyla and their memory. We do what we can and want, in their memory.

(emphasis mine)
"Can't We All Just Get Along"?
The key word here is IF - AZGiGi said IF you PM me the amount I will be happy to keep posting a running tally of the "good thing" we did as a group. If someone doesn't want to have their amount known (or even if they gave) then no problem. It's an anonymous crime forum and participation in ANYTHING here is 100% voluntary and unless you make it otherwise yourself, 100% anonymous too.
The word is IF, as in IF you want to. It was a simple statement, not even a request. A personal question or implied "order" infringing on someone's privacy would have been "I must know what all WS'er gave, PM me what you gave and I will post a detailed itemized list". Not IF you would like to tell me what you gave I will post an anonymous tally of ALL our donations so we can all feel proud of our accomplishment in helping a very poor school in Taylor and Skyla's name.
It just seems we are all a little edgy and frustrated here, but we shouldn't allow this case to do this to us. If the horrible thing that happened to Skyla and Taylor causes us all to be nasty to each other then the killer(s) "toll" just grows to include us, the people who are here every day, united by hope and holding on to the belief that justice will come.
I just think we need to avoid pointing at others publicly and take it to PM's if we think something needs to be addressed with that person. Let's just speak for ourselves here and not "everyone". A simple "I don't agree" is polite and succinct and keeps things focused on the case and NOT us.
To everyone who comes to this forum and keeps believing in justice
:blowkiss: and
Peace to all!

You're very welcome, cloud. I would like to add that memorial funds have been set up for the girls' families as well. Donations are being accepted for both families under separate accounts, and can be made to the Skyla Whitaker Memorial Fund or the Taylor Paschal-Placker Memorial Fund, and sent to the Bank of Commerce, P.O. Box 48, Weleetka, OK 74880.

That's where an organization I belong to sent monies when the media first released where to send it back in June. Then it came up here on this Forum that $100,000.00 had been collected but was never verified.
Regrading the uniforms: I had another thought for those that live in the area of Weleetka, or close enough to drive there. Why not do what our organization does and contact local merchants for donations, even if they only give a few dollars, it all adds up and is a tax write off for the merchant.
When all the monies collected are gathered by a local from the merchants it could be taken directly to Ms. Mankin at Graham School, she would be thrilled.

This tragedy has left us so emotionally raw that it so good to know that there are many good people that want to help us. We have received such good response that I think that the students are starting to heal just a little.

Truth be told Frog, the few of us here at WS are not the only ones across America who've read about this horrific incident, or have read where to send donations to the Bank to cover burial expenses and also the name of the school where the girls attended.
We're also not the only site that follows this case and feels deeply, just as we do here at WS. This case will not be forgotten for a long time, but as with other cases, when time elapses and nothing new is reported the facts fade.
I personally have followed many cases, some stand out more in my mind like the Groene/McKenzie murders in Idaho which lead to information of other murders the demon had tortured and murdered, one being only 40 miles from me in California. Those last murders took place in 2005, and just now going to trial!
In my State, in an area where I have family, a case took two years before an arrest was ever made even though the mother and grandmother of the victims knew who the murderer was. It was a horrific case, involving a young mother and her 10 month old son being murdered in their apartment................the 10 month old was literally hanged with a cord in his crib.
We had the Danielle van Dam & Samantha Runnion case out my way also, just to name a few. None of these cases will ever be forgotten in my mind just as these two little girls from Oklahoma won't.

With time, the facts do indeed fade; but the memories don't. Long after the facts themselves have dissipated, "our girls" will continue to live on in my heart, as will the wonderful memories we have and will continue to create here. :)
There are a few cases that seem to stick in my mind also, and this will certainly be one of them. I guess in the grand scheme of things, the donations made from us here at WS may seem like a drop in the bucket, but the way I look at it, what's important is not how much we give compared to the total but simply the fact that we are helping, be it through prayers, donations, gifts left at the memorial site, anything. Everything given has equal value in my mind.
(These are just my thoughts and opinions, and I am in no way attempting to discount what anyone else says.)
Wow, sorry... I guess you've caught me in one of those "sentimental" moods. Time for breakfast... If I see Elvis in my oatmeal I'll tell him everyone said hello (yes, another night with less than adequate sleep). :p

Hi all, looking closer at the basketball and cheerleading pictures from the school's website, it almost looks like three of the cheerleaders are also on the basketball team (as far as I can tell). We know that they want new cheerleading uniforms because of the loss of Taylor and Skyla, but I wonder if they are secretly raising funds for new basketball uniforms as well? From the agenda on the website:
Discuss with the option to take action on the following fundraisers:
1. Seniors---Indian Taco/chili dinners
2. Juniors---T and D Meats and Candles
3. Library---Book Fair
4. Elementary Basketball and Cheerleading---Bracelets
I wonder if this is something else we can help with if we want to?
Just a thought is all...

I sent the e-mail to Wanda at 8:31p ET, and received a reply at 8:39p !!!!
In a nutshell:
The school is indeed accepting donations for both the boys and girls basketball teams for new uniforms. In the past, they have always worn the old high school hand-me-downs.
Checks can be made out to the same place as the cheerleading fund (obviously :p). I would put something like "Elementary Basketball" in the memo area of the check.

I'm guessing that they don't have a football team, as I don't see it listed under Athletics on the web site. Looking at the basketball schedule, they have games on Monday Nov. 3 and Thursday Nov. 6 at home, and not another home game until January 5th of 2009. Maybe though, like you said, they will have some sort of pep rally or something while we're there.
Cheers and Happy Labor Day,

I know what you mean, poco... I haven't taken my bracelet off since I got it. I have the second one stored in a safe place just in case. :)

When I got my bracelets there was also a thank you note from Wanda, but just 5 minutes ago I went to my mailbox and there was a thank you card signed by all the cheerleaders. The feeling I got when I first read that card was absolutely indescribable. How incredibly sweet of them to take the time to do that. :)

Thought I would give you all an update. I called the school and talked to Kim, (didnt even look at the time, and Wanda was gone to lunch) and Kim was so excited about the people who cared so much and sent funds to help with the cheerleaders uniforms. She said, "We got money from some guy in Ohio... someone from CA, and even from Canada! People are soooooooooo sweet!" I smiled!
She told me that even the kids who play basketball didnt want to wear the same uniforms. The kids just have this thing about what was so much Taylor and Skyla, leaving it as it was. I dont know how to describe it and neither did she. So they are reaching into funds and buying new basketball uniforms too.
I called back later... just now... and spoke with Wanda Mankin. I felt I could do this as I go way back with Wanda. Anyway, she said everyone had been so kind, and she thought they had collected over $400.00 but it may be more, she wasnt sure. She said she hoped everyone got their thank you notes. They tried to get them all out, and that everyone (students included) was so touched that people from everywhere cared about their little school out in the middle of nowhere.
Anyway...... that's about it. Just wanted to update you. They are very touched and very grateful that you all care.
Heartstrings....

Aww ... Thanks for posting this, Frog... It means SO much to hear! Wanda did tell me that they are accepting donations for the basketball teams as well; there should be info in this thread somewhere (I think it's on page 2). The thank you notes were so incredibly touching, it's hard to describe in words! Such sweet people at the school and in this forum :)

Awwww, that is so sweet. Thanks for the update Frog. I am hoping that the money from Canada was mine!!! (I did send US funds though, lol). I am still waiting for my bracelets. I have been running to my mailbox everyday after work to see if they are there. :)
I am happy that so many people found it in their hearts to give to the classmates of Skyla and Taylor. I think that this is a positive step for them to move forward but to also cherish the memories of the girls.

Well said, Lauren, very sweet. :). How long have you been waiting for your bracelets? It took about a week or so to ship to the states but it may take longer to ship to Canada (I would think).

I tell you.. As I read all the post on this page once again tears in my eyes.. but alas this time not from sadness.. from pure joy & awe of all the love that is still present in the wicked world. I am so proud of our little corner of the world that proves this ..this unconditional love of "Our Girls" & all that they cared about. :blowkiss:

What a sweet post, 99... I couldn't agree more, I watch the news and hear about all the evil that goes on everywhere on a daily basis, and I'm so glad to know that I can come back here and be reminded that there still are really great people in the world. :)
Cheers,

Just wanted you to all know I finally received my bracelets!!!!! It seems that they got my letter and money within a few days, but it took 10 days from the day they mailed out my bracelets til the day I received them. But I got them!!!! I also received a card with a few signatures on it. I'm so excited. Thank goodness because when I had emailed Wanda she only hand a few bracelets left and she advised they would not be ordering anymore. But I got mine!!! I haven't opened the packages yet, not sure I want to. I wouldn't want to lose them. :)

Well, here they are, folks! The new cheerleading uniforms! Wanda and Tammy were nice enough to show these to us when we visited the school. Special thanks to ArizonaGiGi for the first photo, and the idea!

KP thanks for posting the pics. These uniforms were a very good quality. The skirt is the latest kind that teams wear now, a tight straight skirt, not the older pleated type.
A big Thank you to everyone who donated :blowkiss: to help the team buy them. Incidentally, there is now a boy on the team. I didn't see his uniform but it is a sweat pant type uniform Tammy (the cheer coach) told me.

What a thrill to actually see them in person! Wanda and Tammy were so sweet to allow us the opportunity to spend some time at the school.
