David Leavitt, 40, called 911 from his cell phone at 12:40 a.m. and again at 12:49 a.m. Monday, police said. Using his phone signal, police were able to determine he was calling from somewhere near 1572 Porters Point Road in Colchester.

It's a residential area surrounded by water.

Police said they searched the area, but were unable to locate Leavitt or his vehicle, a 1995 white Jeep Cherokee with Vermont license plate ETM777.

Police said they learned Leavitt had been at a bar Sunday night singing karaoke with friends but they say he had not been drinking alcohol.
Police said Leavitt told people at Nightcrawlers, a Colchester bar, that he planned to drive his Jeep Cherokee onto the ice around 12:30 a.m. Monday.

Missing Man's Body Recovered From Lake
Pilot Of Small Plane Spotted Man's Truck In Water
Search crews found the body of a missing Burlington man in Mallets Bay Monday afternoon.

David Leavitt, 40, disappeared two weeks ago after telling friends he planned to drive his vehicle on Lake Champlain from Colchester to the Champlain Islands. Police said he called 911 twice for help on the night he disappeared and were able to trace his calls to the Malletts Bay area.

The pilot of a small plane spotted what the pilot thought might be Leavitt's truck in the lake Sunday. Crews traveled to the scene Monday and found the truck and Leavitt's body about 500 feet from the Colchester causeway in an area of open water that was about 15 feet deep.

Leavitt's body was recovered a short time later. The truck remains in the lake. Leavitt's family plans to work with state officials to recover the vehicle.

Police said Leavitt told people at Nightcrawlers, a Colchester bar, that he planned to drive his Jeep Cherokee onto the ice the night he disappeared.
