This happened in a neighboring city. I thought what I had read about the case previously was bad enough, but it seems it only gets worse.

I thought the same thing. She did try to take her back to Georgia at one point but I wonder why she didn't make more of an effort to see Carly while she was living with her sperm donor and step-monster. I'd like to deny these two a**hats food for a while. Neither one looks like they've been going without.

If all of these murders of children was happening in another country our president and political leaders would be OUTRAGED!
But it seems that they all have a blind eye when it comes to the sexual abuse, abduction, kidnapping and murder of children.
I get so angry that the laws are not stricter on these MONSTERS!
Why do we have to BEG our government to do something to keep children safer????

How stupid must you be to take out insurance policies on a child and then beat/starve her to death?

It looks like her mom fought for custody, if Social Svcs recommended that the dad and step-witch have sole custody, it is their fault.
Theirs and the judges. She would have gone to jail if she had violated the custody order and her child would still be dead. She and Carly were in a no-win situation.
There is really little a parent can do when the court makes the wrong decision.
CPS of course doesn't have to answer any questions about complaints they received on the dad & step-mom.
This isn't her mother's fault and IMO, Social Svc's was an accessory to murder if they were aware of the abuse and did nothing.

The search warrant. They found two life insurance documents on Carly.
I'd like to know the amount on the policies and if they have them on their other children. I do have small policies on my kids through work, I know it felt strange to sign up for them, kinda made me sick to my stomach to think about it. I couldn't tell you where they are or if they're for $5k or $10k.

They are a pretty standard amount and wouldn't raise any eyebrows if you ever needed to use them. The fact that these monsters had 2 and LE knew about them quickly enough to put them on a SW, tells me something is up. :furious: I'd love to hear they got some of their own style of punishment doled back at them in prison.

The father was denied bail yesterday in court.

http://www.upi.com/Top_News/2009/06/18/Bond-denied-father-charged-with-murder/UPI-47531245297609/

The step-mother's hearing will be today (Friday, June 19). I'm pretty sure her bail will be denied too. I think the father must be confessing to everything that he was aware of and what step-mom did. Too bad he couldn't have stepped up to the plate and taken his daughter out of the situation before she died.

I also worry that the step-mother is going to use some type of insanity defense. She kept posting on her myspace (or was it facebook) about how she couldn't take it anymore. That the kids were too much for her to handle. If anyone needs a link for that I can go look. I think it was in one of the original links for the story.

But just look how young the parents are - for a 5 year old daughter the father is 24, the stepmom 21. That's just too young, especially for people with little to no parenting/life skills.

Sometimes I think people (teens/children) should have to finish high school and have worked for a year or two before getting married and having kids. Yeah, I know, no way to police that, but still.... maybe we could reduced the number of these sad events?

I think this is an interesting idea, but I know a couple who were married when she was 17 and he was 19, they had 5 beautiful children and are still going strong 25 years later. Their children are educated and sucessful. And for the record, they never starved any or kept them in boxes.

Personally, getting to the root of why these folks have the children to begin with would work for me. It is not necessary to have children or even unprotected sex for that matter. So, WTH? Beyond that, we live in a society that supports choice-so there are a number of ways to deal with unplanned pregnancy...none the least of which is adoption. But instead the folks who initiate these crimes against children opt to starve, beat, torture and kill??? It blows my mind. This baby lived in hell-people recognized it, but Dad was the better choice???

Okay - I have to jump in here on this conversation with you and believe, Pudd. What I want to know is how a person can be so MEAN? Where is their conscious? Teaching them to be better parents is a great idea, but the parent must also have some kind of inner voice that speaks to them when they do something mean. Without that inner voice, you can't teach the parent a darn thing! There was no inner voice here! The first time you tie a kid up and look at them, you HAVE TO KNOW that it is the WRONG thing to do :confused:. Don't you? Young and stupid is no excuse for MEANNESS. I want to know WHY these parents don't recognize this MEANNESS in themselves and do something about it? Like give the kids away, seek professional help, whatever.

There is absolutely NO excuse for hurting a child over and over again. NO EXCUSE except that the person is a POS without benefit of a conscious. It sounds like the dad had a small twinge of guilt over what he did and what he allowed, but it wasn't enough to make him act like a man and stop the violence.

That's the part I don't get. To act mean over and over again :furious::furious::furious:

Salem

PS - I'm beginning to believe that people without a conscious are broken and there may be no way to fix them?

It seems Carly's dad was investigated for abuse in other states. I didn't realize that one state doesn't notify another of an abuse investigation when a subject moves. I guess if the investigation doesn't find any evidence then the case is closed and they have no idea where and if a family moves.

It has to start with the parents. If the parents of these two weren't there or were there but awful, then they didn't have a chance. I see to much today that kids are spoiled and never told "no".

This story seems to say to me that Step-witch didn't want Carly because she came between her and her man. They didn't say how the other two children were treated, but I bet dollars to doughnuts her two children were fine. She needs to be put to death!:furious:

Child murder case will go to trial
Updated: Friday, 04 Dec 2009, 8:28 AM EST
Published : Friday, 04 Dec 2009, 8:28 AM EST

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - The father and stepmother of a 5-year-old child who was beaten to death will go on trial on murder charges.

A Chesapeake Grand Jury heard the case on December 1 and determined there was enough evidence to take the case to trial.

Police arrested 25-year-old Joshua Sawyer and 21-year-old Brandy Sawyer in the June death of his daughter, Carly. Joshua Sawyer was charged with second-degree murder, his wife with first-degree murder. Both were charged with felony child neglect. They are being held without bond.

Authorities say Carly was confined in a box, tied up, hit with a belt and denied food.

A medical examiner ruled the cause of Carly's death was blunt force trauma. Starvation and medical neglect also contributed to the child's death.

The next court date for this case is January 24. At that time, a trial date will be determined.

***I'm looking now to see if I can find anything from the Jan. court date.

I got a FB message a few days ago from a friend here in Zachary, LA (Where Carly's maternal grandparents, the K's live). The community here is haveing a one pitch softball tournament on Aug. 14th and a chicken dinner sale on Aug. 6th to raise money so the K's can travel to VA for sentencing. This got me looking for updates on the case again and I found several articles I had missed.
Looks like they both pled guilty.
If you go to www.wavy.com (http://www.wavy.com) and put Joshua Sawyer in the search box, several articles come up. These are the two I found regarding the trials.

Police arrested Joshua Sawyer in June 2009 after the death of his daughter, Carly. Officers responded to his Oliver Avenue home to investigate a complaint of child abuse. Police said the little girl was confined in a box, tied up, beaten and denied food.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - In lieu of a trial, a Chesapeake woman instead pleaded guilty Friday to killing her stepdaughter.

Brandy Sawyer, 22, pleaded guilty to first degree murder in the death of Carly Sawyer, her young stepdaughter. In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors agreed not to pursue a charge of felony neglect and child abuse. Sawyer could face life in prison for the murder charge.

Sawyer's sentencing is scheduled for September 21.

It was a very bitter custody battle. The maternal grandparents had Carly for a while during the divorce and would have taken her again if given the chance.
But the father and step mother chose to instead abuse her and treat her like a dog instead of giving her to people who would love and protect her.

Like I've said before, I've met the K's before and they are great people.

I hope our community will support them in their efforts to get enough money to travel to VA in September so they can see these 2 sentenced.

Even if there is a substantiated case, social service agencies in other states aren't obligated to pass case information along to another state, Coyle said.

And "there's no way the agency in North Carolina would have known that they had moved" unless the agency was providing the family services at the time, Coyle said.

She said it is "very easy" for cases to get lost between states.

"The obligation is on the friends and family and parents of the child to make sure the system follows that child," Coyle said.

i dont understand how they can blame the family...if a child has a caring, responsible family they probably wouldnt be in social services in the first place. imo i had forgotten about this case. im glad they went with the guilty pleas... scum. how in the world could they have been so mean/evil to do what they did to this little girl. it just doesnt compute with me with any of these cases. the "parents" really deserve the death penalty imo. i just keep wondering when this kind of crap and the pos's that perpetrate it on innocent children are going to start suffering equal punishment for murdering their children. :furious:

Chesapeake father gets life in abuse death

Joshua S. Sawyer will serve life in prison for the abuse-and-neglect murder of his 5-year-old daughter, Carly, a Circuit Court judge ruled Monday.

Carly died in June 2009 after being beaten, starved and tied up some nights in a box. She weighed 34 pounds at the time of her death. Officials determined that she had been battered long before she died from a brain injury inflicted in her South Norfolk home.

Judge Randall D. Smith gave Joshua Sawyer the maximum sentence allowed under state law. If he is ever put on geriatric release, Sawyer will be kept on supervised probation for three years.

From the same link:

Brandy Sawyer's sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 10.

Dr. Wendy Gunther, an assistant chief medical examiner, said Carly's autopsy showed she had been beaten all over her body, including her head. She had been abused for some time, as evidenced by the range of bruises under her skin, some of which looked like she had been hit with a belt buckle.

Carly also had suffered nutritional neglect, Gunther said. She had no food in her small bowel, had a shrunken liver, and had light hair on her body like that typically seen on an anorexic.

Oh my goodness...his mother tried to say it was from post traumatic stress from being a marine.

From Link:

Defense attorney Greg McCormack called on Carolyn Sawyer, Joshua's mother, to testify that her son was a good student who, as a boy, volunteered as an altar server in his Catholic church.

In 2002 he joined the Marines and was sent to Africa and Iraq, Carolyn Sawyer said. In Africa, part of his job was to screen videos showing violence, including footage of a man being beheaded, she said. Eventually, he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

ETA: Way to stand up for your abused granddaughter lady!!!

At least he will rot! It was the maximum sentence allowed.

One down, one to go. Brandy is next!!!!

I hope the step witch gets as much time as the bio dad. I hate seeing women get lighter sentences because of their gender.

I am so disturbed by these cases where there is someone that wants the child and the other party fights tooth and nail to get the child and then kills them. These aren't cases where a parent is overwhelmed financially or emotionally and has no one to turn to. It's as though they don't want the child but are too selfish to let anyone else have the child. It's all about winning to some people. I seriously don't get it, but I do know it happens way too often.

Such sadistic cruelty is too much for my brain to fathom.

Does anyone know which prison Joshua Sawyer has gone to? I'd like to send him a little something to think about.

It's all about CONTROL! Makes me sick.

When she was finally returned to the family that loved and wanted her, she was in a coffin! And her mother had to go to court to even get her body.

Makes me sick.

I pray for all who love Carly. I know life was the maximum sentence, but WHY?

Why couldn't he get the DP?

I think the stepmonster was the more abusive in the family just from what I've read and heard. If she doesn't get life I will scream!

Rest in Peace Carly. Sorry you had to suffer at the hands of evil.

They said he listened to the testimony with his head down, yeah I bet!
Look at his mug shot. So sad, so teary eyed!!! Wonder how Carly felt in that box Mr. Sawyer??? Wonder how she felt when she was tied up and starved????
Wonder how she felt knowing the other kids in the house were eating supper at a table and she was tied up in a box wasteing away.
30 something pounds! Shrunken liver!!! Same signs as anorexia!!!!

Carly was child! A sweet beautiful child!!!

I can only hope you suffer a 10th of what Carly suffered during your stay in prison.
