A freshman at Whiting High School failed to show up for classes on Friday and hasn't been seen since.

Charlie Mendez, 15, left her home in the 2100 block of Schrage Avenue for a five-block walk to the school around 7 a.m., family members said.

When last seen Friday morning, Charlie Mendez was wearing a white T-shirt, beige pants and white gym shoes, according to police reports.

Charlie Mendez, 15 . . . left for classes early on the morning of Sept. 4, and hasn't been seen since.

But a report from a friend of the missing student that she had received a call from her this week has led to a change in the investigation from that of an abduction to one of a runaway, police said.

Charlie Mendez said that she was fine, but wouldn't say where she was, the friend told police.

Detectives said Wednesday that they are still trying to verify the new information, but believe the report is credible.
