The date and place of birth of Hilary are correct, as I'm FB friends with friends and family of hers.

Also, I dont' know where the article is, but the RCMP is setting up a task force and not have canines and infra-red helicopter.

The natives have been doing searches themselves, but finally the RCMP is giving more help.

Upon reviewing the OPP.CA missing person site this morning for Mariam Makhniashvili's missing person case (Ontario), I found what I thought was Hilary's case. It turns out, it is a different girl from Quebec, but the resemblance to Hilary is very strong, IMO.

Could these cases be linked?

Missing teen's family pleads for help

Last Updated: Wednesday, September 23, 2009 | 12:22 PM AT

The family of Hilary Bonnell is begging for help to find the teenager who disappeared from the Eskinuopitijk First Nation almost three weeks ago.

Sherry Ward, Bonnell's aunt, is asking people in the northeastern New Brunswick community of Eskinuopitijk, commonly known as Burnt Church, to check their own properties for the missing teenager.

"There is a predator out there. Hilary did not run away. Somebody had to have taken her for her not to be here," Ward said.

Meeting between police, parents takes place Tuesday for Bonnell

Published Wednesday September 30th, 2009

ESGENOOPETITJ - A meeting between RCMP and Esgenoopetitj parents took place Tuesday as community members search for answers about the Hilary Bonnell case.

Insp. Roch Fortin said there wasn't a lot police could reveal about the case at this point, but said the search was progressing and police are currently looking at answering questions from the Esgenoopetitj community.

"Our role as a police officer up there is just to maintain the peace and be impartial and just encourage the press," he said. "[Police are] still working and ... I wish I could jump out and say ‘hey, this is what we got' but we don't have very much further."

RCMP continue hunt for missing girl

Published Thursday October 22nd, 2009

Teen disappeared after attending house party Sept. 5

ESGENOOPETITJ - RCMP officials in northeastern New Brunswick say the pieces of the puzzle are beginning to fall into place regarding their investigation into the disappearance of 16-year-old Hilary Bonnell.

District 8 spokesman Const. François Poirier said yesterday that although investigators haven't officially determined whether they're dealing with an abduction or a teenage runaway, the picture becomes clearer with each passing day.

Poirier wouldn't get into details about the nearly 500 leads police have been working since the teenager went missing after attending an all-night house party in Esgenoopetitj First Nation the morning of Sept. 5, but stressed there is a lot going on behind the scenes.

RCMP search N.B. reserve where girl, 16, went missing.

ESGENOOPETITJ FIRST NATION, N.B.- RCMP are expected to continue searching the home of a missing girl's relative Wednesday on a First Nation community 180 kilometres north of Moncton.

Hilary Bonnell, 16, went missing on Sept. 5 after texting "Oh my God, I am so scared" to a friend. The home is near a store where the girl was last seen.

RCMP arrived at the home Tuesday on the Esgenoopetitj First Nations reserve, local media reported Wednesday.

An RCMP spokesman would not confirm Wednesday who the home belonged to, or whether a link existed between the search warrant and the hunt for the missing teen.

Hi Ducky,

In the comments on the CBC story, there is speculation about the perp being either the uncle or his son. I'm a bit familiar with the area, most of my family lives in NE New Brunswick. The woods are fairly thick and I know Tabusintac is fairly large area with a reserve which is associated with Esginoopetijg. In the Tracadie area, there's another reserve called Pokemouche. It's a bit north of Tracadie. I wonder if she was located near the woods of the Pokemoche reserve.

The area where Hilary was found is in an area called the Tracadie Military Training area. This area is just west of Tracadie and south of St-Isidore. This place is so very close to where my family lives, the RCMP must have been everywhere.

My thoughts go out to Hilary's family and hope that healing can come soon.

Body found is missing N.B. teen's: RCMP

RCMP have confirmed that the body found on New Brunswick's Acadian Peninsula earlier this week is that of 16-year-old Hilary Bonnell, who went missing from the Esgenoopetitj First Nation two months ago.

Although autopsy results still aren't in, Insp. Roch Fortin said Saturday there is little doubt that it is Hilary.

"We only have one missing person in the Acadian Peninsula. The clothing and some of the evidence found at the scene, with all the evidence that we have at the scene and how we were led to the scene, we are 100 per cent sure that this is Hilary," he said.

"However, the DNA and testing will conclude beyond any reasonable doubt."

'I will never hold my baby girl again'

ESGENOOPETITJ - A sacred bonfire burned on into the night in this First Nations community on Friday, as a people stung by heartbreak and disbelief stood watching the flames.

...

"I really thought we were going to find her alive, I wanted her to come home, but now she is coming home in a box," said Pamela Fillier, Hilary's mother, with tears streaming down her cheeks as she clutched her husband Fred's arm on Friday night.

"My daughter is my life, she is my life, not was. That is my only daughter and my only daughter is dead."

...

"Instead of planning a homecoming, now I have to plan my daughter's funeral," Pamela Filler said...

"I will never get to hold my baby girl again."

I read in L'Acadie Nouvelle, a french newspaper from the area, that the second home searched in Tabusintac was in fact a garage. The article also links Curtis Bonnell to the crime although charges haven't been given yet. Hilary's cousin was arrested and charged with the sexual assault and confinement of a 17 year old girl and appeared in court just before Hilary's body was found.

Dead N.B. teen's community hopes for change

Members of the Eskinuopitijk First Nation band council are expressing hope for change after the death of a teenager from their community in northeastern New Brunswick.

Now that they know the fate of 16-year-old Hilary Bonnell, who went missing more than two months ago, Coun. Curtis Bartibogue said he hopes they can focus on the future.

"We got to start looking at towards preventing it from ever happening again, look at the security of our community and hopefully, I could see the RCMP, after this has all blown over, to continue working with our community," he said.

Dental records confirm body is that of missing N.B. teen

The New Brunswick RCMP have confirmed that the body found in a wooded area in Tracadie-Sheila is that of Hilary Bonnell, the teenager who disappeared from the Esgenoopetitj First Nation two months ago.

An RCMP statement said the positive identification was made through Bonnell's dental records.

The police investigation is continuing and while an autopsy has been performed, the analysis is expected to take several weeks.

The community, commonly known as Burnt Church, is still trying to process the tragic news, said band spokesman Alex Dedham.

"There's a lot of grief in the community," he said. "There's a lot of... we'll say, accusations. People are looking for answers, and they're slow [in] coming."

ESGENOOPETITJ - Police involved in the criminal investigation surrounding the disappearance and murder of Hilary Bonnell say that charges are being prepared against a suspect already in custody on an unrelated matter.

RCMP Insp. Roch Fortin said yesterday police are still awaiting lab results to be returned in light of an autopsy conducted on Hilary's remains and also need to conduct a few more interviews before formal charges can be laid.

"We must determine if other people are involved or not in the disappearance of Hilary Bonnell," Fortin said. "That's where our priority is right now.

"Either we're going to charge some individuals or we're going to clear them."

Fortin confirmed that RCMP will also pursue charges against individuals who provided false information which led police to Portage River during the search for Hilary.

Hundreds mourn Hilary Bonnell
Published Friday November 20th, 2009

Teen laid to rest in Esgenoopetitj First Nation yesterday

ESGENOOPETITJ - As the setting sun cast a stunning purple hue over the calm waters of Miramichi Bay, a grieving mother wept over her daughter's casket.

More than two months after her disappearance, Nancy Hilary Bonnell was finally laid to rest yesterday during a funeral service held at St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church on Esgenoopetitj First Nation.

"Thank God nobody is hurting her anymore "¦ she was lost but now she's home," said Pamela Fillier, Hilary's mother.

Well over 500 people came out to mourn the death of the 16-year-old, with a funeral procession of more than 200 of Hilary's family and friends being led into the quaint church to the sounds of traditional aboriginal drums.

What followed was an emotional service containing Roman Catholic and Mi'kmaq elements, led largely by Bishop Robert Harris of the Saint John Diocese.

With her husband Fred by her side, Fillier clutched an eagle feather throughout the ceremony, gently stroking Hilary's casket with it periodically.

Chiefs from First Nations across Atlantic Canada were on hand to show their support, as was Lt.-Gov. Graydon Nicholas, who shared a few words with the family during the short service.

"It is a privilege for me to be here, to be with you and to let you know that our thoughts and our prayers are with you," said Nicholas.

Not sure about this publication, never heard of it before and it seems to be from the Kitchener area. Here is an excerpt from the article:

Instead of an easily–explained murder by a sociopathic stranger, or mentally unstable outsider, it has been revealed that the suspect being held in custody is her cousin, Curtis Bonnell. He is rumoured to have disclosed the location of her body to authorities earlier in the week. More information was reported and the case only got more complicated. Curtis himself is a repeat sex offender, released from prison two years ago after serving five for sexual assault. He was actually being held by police in connection with another sexual assault that occurred the same morning as Hilary herself disappeared.

Youth centre planned to honour Hilary Bonnell

A group of teens from the Esgeoopetitj First Nation in northeastern New Brunswick have started raising money to build a youth centre in memory of Hilary Bonnell.

Bonnell, 16, was killed after she disappeared Sept. 5, 2009, from the Esgenoopetitj First Nation, commonly known as Burnt Church. She had attended a party on the reserve with friends the night before and was last seen walking along Highway 11 at about 7:30 a.m. AT.

Two months later, her body was found in a heavily wooded area in Tracadie-Sheila. Her cousin, Curtis Bonnell, 29, has been charged with first-degree murder in her death.

Shortly after the teen's death, her mother Pamela Fillier said she wanted to open a youth centre in memory of her daughter. Now, some of Hilary's friends are taking steps to make that happen.

Dance to benefit Hilary Bonnell fund
Published Friday February 12th, 2010

Proceeds to go toward establishing 'Hilary's House' youth centre in Esgenoopetitj First Nation

ESGENOOPETITJ - A benefit dance in memory of a slain Miramichi teenager is being held this weekend in the First Nations community where she went missing.

Shortly after Pamela Fillier received word that her daughter, 16-year-old Hilary Bonnell, was found dead in a wooded area outside of Tabusintac in November, the grieving mother insisted she wanted her daughter's name to live on.

Fillier said her vision was to arrange for the creation of a youth centre in Esgenoopetitj First Nation where children could go to socialize in a safe, secure environment and receive advice from counsellors on staff.

That process starts tomorrow night at the Esgenoopetitj Band Hall, where a benefit dance will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight, with all proceeds going toward the youth centre, which will be known as 'Hilary's House.'

The push for a youth centre has the full support of District 8 RCMP, with Insp. Roch Fortin noting that the agonizing three-month search for Hilary resulted in a closer relationship between law enforcement officials and the First Nation community.

Burnt Church slaying gets hearing date

Last Updated: Monday, March 22, 2010 | 3:46 PM AT

A preliminary inquiry for a northern New Brunswick man accused of killing his 16-year-old cousin has been set for September — a year after the teenager disappeared.

Curtis Bonnell, 29, of the Esgenoopetitj First Nation will return to Miramichi provincial court on Sept. 21. Three days have been set aside for the hearing.

Bonnell is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Hilary Bonnell, who disappeared Sept. 5 from Esgenoopetitj, commonly known as Burnt Church.

Bonnell was charged Dec. 8 and has remained in custody at the Moncton Detention Centre.

His case had been adjourned twice to give the defence more time to review the evidence.

Bonnell is also facing charges of sexual assault, unlawful confinement and resisting arrest in connection with an unrelated incident involving a 17-year-old girl, identified only as MAWS. The alleged assault took place just days before police found Hilary's body.

A preliminary hearing was held in that case on March 18 and Bonnell was committed to stand trial in Court of Queen's Bench. A date has not yet been set.

The trial is beginning now. Finally. Justice is coming Hilary. Apparently Curtis Bonnell grabbed her at around 8 a.m. on Sept 5th 2009. Hilary had sent out three texts to her cousin at around the same time telling her that she was very scared.

Bonnell travelled down Micmac Road to visit his sister at about the same time Hilary was walking there, said Richards.

Hilary was about 30 minutes from her destination, Richards said. Her last communication were the three text messages to Haley's cell phone, which was seized by police.

The jury will see some graphic pictures, Richards warned during his opening remarks.

The trial is expected to last four to six weeks.

About 45 witnesses will be called, including Hilary Bonnell's parents, Pam Fillier and Boyd Bonnell.

The jury was then shown surveillance video from a local gas station that showed a girl enter and leave the store between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. that day. Fillier identified the girl as Hilary.
The video also showed a man arrive at the station about three minutes later and drive off in a red pickup truck. Fillier identified him as Curtis Bonnell.

Hilary's cousin only got her texts five days after they were sent because her phone needed to be recharged. :(

RCMP did get a spiritual elder to meet with Bonnell in person and that elder is trying to convince Bonnell to give police the details they want to hear. At one point the elder even asked Curtis Bonnell to "stop playing the drama game."

He said he covered her mouth to stop her from yelling and the next thing he knew, she was dead.

Bonnell told the Miramichi courtroom he woke up on Sept. 5, 2009, in his truck, which was parked at his father's garage in Tabusintac, to find Hilary slumped over in the passenger seat unresponsive.

Bonnell said he didn't know who it was at first so he got out of truck, opened the passenger door and Hilary started to fall out.

He thought she was passed out from drinking, but when he grabbed her arm, it was rigid and she had no colour in her face.

He started to panic, he said. "What am I going to do? Nobody's going to believe me.

MIRAMICHI, N.B. -- The lawyer for Curtis Bonnell says the jury at his trial must decide if a crime was committed in the death of his cousin three years ago in New Brunswick, a suggestion the Crown flatly dismissed Thursday, pointing to a videotape confession as a key piece of evidence.
In his closing arguments in the Court of Queen's Bench, Gilles Lemieux asked the jury why Bonnell would have led police to where 16-year-old Hilary Bonnell was buried if he killed her.
"If Curtis Bonnell had committed murder and tried to cover it up, why would he tell where the body was and ask for help to determine what happened?" he said.

Evidence at the trial showed Curtis Bonnell had told police, his father and a Esgenoopetitj First Nation spiritual elder that he had killed her. But the defence claimed the confession to police was given under pressure.

thanks for the updates throughout the trial, a guilty verdict was what I expected, for her family at least they now know her killer has been caught and convicted, and that will at least bring them a modicum of peace,

"In its statement, the RCMP said the verdict means an automatic life sentence in prison with no eligibility for parole for at least 25 years.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for November 14".
