Hello WS :)

I was looking for current information on this case. I see I found the same information re: the trial date. Thanks

Trial in killing of Calif. girl set for Oct. 2010

STOCKTON, Calif. — A trial date has been set for a Northern California woman charged with killing an 8-year-old girl whose body was found stuffed in a suitcase.

San Joaquin County Judge Linda Lofthus on Friday said Melissa Huckaby’s murder trial would begin Oct. 18, 2010.

The 28-year-old former Sunday school teacher has pleaded not guilty to kidnapping, raping and murdering Sandra Cantu of Tracy, as well as drugging two other people.

San Joaquin County prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Huckaby, who was indicted in July following her arrest in April.

Prosecutors argued for a speedy trial because they say younger witnesses who may testify could have a difficult time recalling specifics in the case.

Younger witnesses?? I wonder if they are referring to her drugging victim and her own daughter.

Melissa Huckaby was in court today sporting a new, very short, very curly hairdo. She also appeared to have gained some weight.

During today's hearing, Huckaby's attorney continued his quest to get some of the evidence against his client thrown out. The judge agreed to postpone a hearing on that request to May 10th.

STOCKTON — The attorney for Melissa Huckaby received a delay today for a hearing when he is expected to argue that pieces of evidence investigators collected against his client should be kept out of the death penalty trial.

Stepping into the Stockton courtroom, Huckaby’s physical appearance was noticeably different. The 29-year-old now has short, frizzy hair and has gained considerable weight since her arrest one year ago on charges she kidnapped, raped and murdered Tracy’s 8-year-old Sandra Cantu.

I wonder if the weight gain might be due to anti-depressants or some kind of medication like that--I'm just assuming that she is being medicated. I have no way of knowing for sure. Could be the jail food, too.
