Major Development in Amber Dubois Case: Sources
Updated 2:14 PM PST, Sun, Mar 7, 2010
<snipped>
More than one year after the disappearance of Escondido teen Amber Dubois sources say there has been a major development in the case.

Investigators have scheduled a 3.30 p.m. news conference regarding Amber's case but would not reveal any other details. Amber was last seen walking on Feb. 13, 2009 with a man about 200 yards from Escondido High School. She was 14-years old at the time.

In late February, Poway teenager Chelsea King's disappearance launched an extensive search in the area around Lake Hodges with officers from multiple agencies. A body was found along the southern edge of the lake and a registered sex offender was charged with murder and rape in Chelsea's death. After the discovery of a body in the King search, the search for Amber intensified.

On Friday, law enforcement officers were in Kit Carson Park in Escondido following up on a tip that a group of children found a bag with hair inside. On Saturday, police drained the pond in the park for a second day of searching. Investigators found no clues, Lt. Craig Carter said.

The Sheriff’s Department has scheduled a press conference for 3:30 p.m. today at its Kearney Mesa Headquarters in connection with the investigation into disappearance of Escondido teenager Amber Dubois.

It is unclear what information will be revealed at the press conference but reached by phone Dubois’ grandmother Sheila Welch said, “I am a very sad grandmother today,” She would not elaborate.

Investigators have been working to determine if John Albert Gardner, a 30-year-old registered sex offender who was arrested in connection with the murder of 17-year-old Chelsea King, may have also been connected to the Dubois case. Gardner was living about two miles away from the area where the girl vanished.

Sheriff’s department calls Sunday press conference on Amber Dubois
Sunday, March 7, 2010
<snipped>
Just a day after the search of a pond at Escondido’s Kit Carson Park proved to be unfruitful in the search for missing teenager Amber Dubois, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Sunday called a news conference about the case.

There was no immediate indication of the nature of any announcement. The Sheriff’s Department has not had a major role in the Dubois case, as the girl disappeared in Escondido and the the Escondido Police Department has been the lead law enforcement agency investigating her disappearance

The search at Kit Carson Park stemmed from a tip received Thursday that last May, three girls found a black plastic bag and human hair at the edge of a pond, said Escondido police Lt. Craig Carter. Detectives found a bag Thursday night, but it contained only mud and debris, Carter said. It was given to the FBI to analyze.

Sheriff's officials have called a Sunday news conference regarding missing Escondido teen Amber Dubois.

No details were released in advance of the briefing, scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at the Escondido Police Department.

On Friday and Saturday, search and rescue personnel from the Sheriff's Department, Escondido Police Department and FBI searched a southeast area of Kit Carson Park in Escondido for clues to Amber's disappearance.

However, on Saturday Escondido police said the search had turned up no links to the missing girl.

Rest now, Angel Amber...rest easy. I dreamed of you the other night, holding Chelsea, and telling her it would be all right. I dreamed of you, surrounded by light and love and laughter.

The Body of Missing Escondido Teen Amber Dubois Has Been Located
Last Update: 3:53 pm
<snipped>
The body of Amber Dubois was located in the Pala area of northern San Diego County Saturday.

Escondido police made the announcement Sunday afternoon during a brief news conference that provided few details. No questions about the case were taken by investigators.

The discovery was attributed to a lead in the case, but no further information was provided.

Investigators say the skeletal remains were found early Saturday with a positive identification made by the county medical examiner later Saturday.

From the story above. Not surprising that there is conflicting information on this. I tend to believe that it came from a tip, from JAG himself. It just seem to be too coincidental coming so soon after the arrest and the fact that this place seems so remote.

I agree, that would be too coincidental for the hiker to find the body at this time, but stranger things have happened.
Maybe the lead came from someone else and not JAG? I think about the only thing they could entice him with is say they won't go for the death penalty for the Chelsey's case, and I really hope this isn't the case.

geology tour reminder …
Oceanview Mine in Pala, California
Sunday, December 2, 2007

The geology tour is filling up fast! The Oceanview Mine in the Pala mining district of northern San Diego County is the last operating mine from a region that once had 73 mines, producing beautiful tourmalines (some with “watermelon” colors of green and pink), lavender lepidolite mica, plus beautiful crystals of quartz, morganite, beryl, kunzite, garnet, spodumene, and many other rare gems. You get to screen as many buckets of fresh material from the mine as you like and keep any gems you find!

<<<

It is rugged and rocky, with parched, desert scrub and tall mesas that drop straight down to deep canyons. Very few people out there, except for those going by car out to the casino. I wouldn't want to hike out there.

It's about midway between his mom's in Rancho Bernardo and Lake Elsinore. If he took Amber and then maybe couldn't figure out to where to put her, it's definitely got very desolate areas, yet the main road is one of the back ways to the desert (Palm Springs, etc.) and, really is a way they thought David Westerfield may have gone with Danielle Van Dam on his driving around in the motorhome, etc. So...maybe he thought about that?

Just got photos of the map uploaded for the thread, back in a minute.

"Last summer, dogs from Texas hired by the family appeared to have traced Amber’s scent to the community of Pala, specifically to the Pala library. But no one in Pala remembers having ever seen Amber. Bloodhounds used by the FBI smelled no hint of her in Pala several months later."

Well, I don't know exactly where she was found - they've not stated specifics (at least on the news) that I've seen.

BUT, a news helicopter just went racing over, so I'm guessing we're going to have an update at 5 with details and perhaps more on where she really was.

That road to Pala is flatish for a bit, but then does get curvy and up and down and all around. I'm curious if she was found close to a main road or not. That has the potential to be a much harder place to have put a body, because the main road, well more desolate than many places is definitely travelled, so it's not totally isolated, and the non-main road is something that'd it be odd for someone to know backroads, etc. through there.

So I'd think he'd have put her somewhere on a road off the main road, and not all that far off the road, because I think weaving way back in there would be an odd choice for someone who presumably doesn't know the area ::too:: well.

To ME the thing that would seem likely is that he took Amber, went through Valley Center and up the back way to Lilac Road.

Anyone who's lived in Escondido know that road through Valley Center, and if it were an impulse thing with Amber, and he just kept driving past the school after he took her and on into Escondido trying to figure out where to go, it wouldn't be farfetched for him to have ended up on the road to Valley Center, and then dumped her off Lilac there as it reaches the 76 in Pala. So off the ::main:: road of 76/Pala Road, but not somewhere he'd have known. If that makes sense?

The whole lot of them ought to be fired..

There is A LOT of anger in Escondido over this - especially in how differently Chelsea's case was handled - and technically, Escondido begins just on the north side of the lake where Chelsea was jogging...but it's a night and day difference.

It's the topic of conversation in Escondido that comes up as soon as either the names Chelsea or Amber come up this past week.

And I'm sure it will be even more so now.

I really don't know what LE could have done differently. They had zero clues in this case. They didn't even know JAG was in Escondido at the time. At least with Chelsea they had a location to look at, some clothes with evidence. They had nothing with Amber. There was no way they could have known in a million years that she was where she was found.

Agree.

Even if it would not have helped Amber, parents need to know everything possible was done for their missing child.

Amber's family is an example to all of us. They did their own searches and hired their own dogs to track Amber. They did not get very much support from LE.

City councilman in Escondido just implied (on KFMB) -almost stated outright - that JAG IS tied to Amber's disappearance.

News at 5 pm

KUSI (9/51):

Acted on a lead, but would not disclose where that came from. More at 6 pm (they were doing just a brief update again)

KFMB 8:

Discovery of remains were at a VERY early hour on Saturday. (Her dad knew while speaking at Kit Carson yesterday they're saying - or that it was her minus confirmation from the ME)

In a "rugged" and "remote" part of Pala.

Her family is thankful to the volunteers who helped them (the family).

Found NORTH of the actual reservation.

They will not comment on the tie to JAG. Took no questions.

Any information on whether JAG is tied to Amber's disappearance would be "inappropriate" to discuss at this time.

I really don't know what LE could have done differently. They had zero clues in this case. They didn't even know JAG was in Escondido at the time. At least with Chelsea they had a location to look at, some clothes with evidence. They had nothing with Amber. There was no way they could have known in a million years that she was where she was found.

They had a sighting of Amber walking to school, alongside an adult male. Why was that discounted?
Did the "sightings" of her let LE off the hook, and they could say she was a runaway?

To say I'm heartbroken is an understatement. To raise a girl chid to be 'grist for the mill' of a predator has become an everyday occurrance. Who's going to take responsibility for raising sons that do this? Are their parents just giant lunks? I could go on and on and on.

I am very familiar with this area. Every Saturday I take my dog Chance sheep herding off of Lake Wohlford Road, then we drive up the back roads to Palomar Mtn to hike and then come back through back roads to Pala to pick up fresh oranges and avocados (10 for $10!) It would have to be off of a main road in my opinion because the land is either Orange and Avocado Groves or very rugged steep terrain. Someone would have to be exceptionally strong and have incredible balance to carry a body through this terrain.

On March 1, 2009 Amber's mom first mentioned Amber being seen with the young male.

I don't believe the police ever asked for the public's help to ID him.

The truck video was not released to the public until April.

The article I just read said she was last seen with a boy who doesn't fit JAG's description.
"Two witnesses who knew Amber saw her walking on North Broadway near the football field with a tall, dark-skinned boy described as “doughy.” "

SoCalSleuth, I'm not sure what you might find on those hills we were talking about, but let me know what you find if you decide to take a look some day. Glad Amber's body has been found. May their family heal.

Thanks for your willingness to look.

God bless you our beloved Amber.
I don't have much time to post, but I check in here often hoping to see the title "Found Safe" on your thread.
I can't explain it, but there is something so precious about you that touched our hearts so deeply. For me personally, maybe it is your love of animals. My heart breaks for your mom who never gave up and is so strong and courageous. You must have been just like her.
It seems you probably just made a mistake and trusted the wrong person never knowing the danger you were in at the time.
Love and prayers to Amber's family and all those here who worked so hard to find answers and solve her case.
Love,
Kelly

I was out this afternoon. I didn't get home until after 4:00. Since then, I've been trying to catch up on the news and all the posts here. So incredibly sad. I just watched the video with Mo and Carrie. Just started sobbing... Absolutely shattered thinking about this sweet little girl walking to school, excited about her lamb and seeing her friends. There just HAS to be justice for Amber!!

holy freaking crap! I am just beyond thinking!! I am having serious *thud* moments over this entire thing. to find her remains so close to the time that 'g' was arrested for Chelsea.. well... I can only guess that he provided the said 'tip' to such a remote area.

Rest easy now Amber because they will put this scumbag away forever. i can see you up in heaven playing with a little, fluffy, white, and innocent lamb... the one you never got to buy that day.

I am seriously heartbroken for her family.

From the very beginning, I have been following Amber's 'case'. I have prayed, daily, for her safe return. I have lit too many virtual candles to count.

Until Chelsea King 'went missing', I had held out hope that Amber was alive. For some reason, I felt so close to Amber, I was sure she was alive, but being held against her will.

This news is more than sad.

I am relieved that Amber's family finally have the answers, but this is just beyond sad.

Just to let you know, the entire area up there (which we down here in the city refer to as 'the mountains"), looks exactly the same--Escondido, RB, Poway,Fallbrook, Pala--it all looks the same. You can see Lake Henshaw from the most rugged parts of Pala-- and off of the main road--I know because I trespassed across a cow ranch to take pictures there two weeks ago for my B&W film class and my boyfriend hunts up there and took me to a spot where he watches the sunrise over the lake from the area--so you may very well have been describing where she was-- we will have to wait and see. As an aside, this place is so vast and remote there is no way they could have found her outside of someone telling them exactly where she was.

I am relieved for Amber's famiIy that this part of their ordeal is over.

But I am so furious. You know either way, JAG or a different perp, another girl was murdered in order to find Amber. They weren't paying attention. The cops involved should be disciplined for how they handled Amber's disappearance.

Rest in peace Amber. :rose: You WILL get justice.

Hi KaylynnCouture,

Thank you for your kind words and welcome when I first started posting here (on Chelsea's thread).

I too believe there will be justice for our Amber. I don't know if she trusted the wrong person she met online or if the suspect in Chelsea's case lead them to her remains. However, I am so thankful her family finally knows the truth about their daughter. I never believed she was a runaway and was furious the authorities did not seem to give her case the attention she deserved.

News at 6:

The press tried to remain respectful when there because of Amber's family, BUT they pushed the sheriff as he walked out to his car and he said, "Look, I can't tell you more right now, but you will soon be finding out more than I can tell you now." That was in response to persistent questions about whether this was tied to JAG.

Hinting from a lawyer that it may have come out of questioning PRIOR to the court date (meaning early on last Sunday/Monday) with JAG, prior to him beginning to refuse questioning.

Saying that this is a very "obscure" place Amber was found, and that the number of people that would know it and where it was and pinpoint it and it just came out now is unlikely.

Saying the questioning once JAG had his attorney wouldn't have allowed questions about Amber to continue, and that's why he believes the info came out prior to Wed.

FBI has jurisdiction because it was in the area of the Pala reservation.

Dubois tip didn't come from Gardner, source says
P.I. says the accused killer of Chelsea King didn't lead authorities to Amber's remains
Sunday, March 7, 2010 at 5:58 p.m.
<snipped>
Accused killer John Albert Gardner III had nothing to do with the tip that led law enforcement to Amber Dubois’ remains, according to a local private investigator who worked on the case.

Bill Garcia, hired by Amber’s family shortly after she disappeared, said he was told by a person with first-hand knowledge that the tip about the location of the remains did not come from Gardner, who was charged Wednesday with the rape and murder of Chelsea King, 17, of Poway. “The entire Chelsea King event emotionally pulled at somebody who had this information,” Garcia said. “They’ve seen the community in a lot of pain. Someone who had been afraid to say something finally came forward.”

Garcia said he’s long suspected Amber's body might be found in the Pala area, because any abductor would have wanted to get away from high-traffic areas quickly, and rural routes out of Escondido lead to the Pauma Valley. “We’ve spent a lot of time in the past year, working that canyon,” Garcia said. “You put yourself in the mindset of someone who would perpetrate this crime, and all the indicators point in that direction. It’s no mystery to me that’s where she was found.” He said his “suspicion” is that the remains were found in the northeast corner of the Pala reservation, “in an area that is difficult to get into and an area we have not searched.”

People.com initially reported that a hiker had stumbled on the remains, but a law enforcement source told The San Diego Union-Tribune that is not correct. People.com removed the reference in later versions of its story.

If it didn't come from Gardner, my guess is the Escondido PD was feeling the heat after all that was done from the moment Chelsea went missing and all they had refused to do for Amber.

He may not have made a plea. They may have just felt pressured to step up their game and get some answers to deflect all the criticism.

I hope for their sake this isn't connected. Otherwise, they're in deep trouble and have a lot of explaining to do since they are just now following up on a tip that didn't come from JAG.

The tip is obviously recent. Someone who saw Chelsea's King case appears to have come forward with the info.

If it's not JAG, then my guess is that it was either a member of the tribe, a migrant worker (they are all over the place up there and many illegals live in that canyon and cross over from the surrounding areas) or a hunter. BTW, the google map of the area doesn't do justice to the Pala Indian Reservation--it is much larger than the area showing on the map. When we were driving around the area 2 weeks ago, there was one point where Lake Henshaw was on the right, right next to us, and part of the Indian reservation was on the left. Can't really tell that from the map.

Source describes the person as afraid to come forward before but now coming forward because of Chelsea King's case.
So I would guess he/she is someone who knew the killer, maybe relative/friend/ girlfriend, etc.
