Kaine creates Kyron Horman Foundation

Wasn't it stressed, early on, that no private searches are allowed? Some Oregon thing....

I don't understand.....there are a snotload of PI's in the Portland area alone.....

I don't know Oregon's laws, but Harry Oakes was able to search with his cadaver dogs, so it seems a PI could do their own investigation...

I know that people were told to stay away, so that LE and SAR wouldn't have to deal with civilian's getting lost. I would think a professional team like TES could go into those places without problem. Do we know if they searched along the areas Terri claimed to have been driving that morning? Watching the videos of some of those roads, there are a lot of very desolate, overgrown spots that could have easily hidden a child.

Maybe Tony has experience with private search groups and advised against it? Maybe it has to do with the terrain involved?

Maybe so! I was thinking more along the lines of a PI, to start an investigation from the beginning...

The way I look at this, is the 12 Godfathers Pizza restaurants that hosted this fundraiser, wrote out the checks. If they had a problem with where the money went, IMO they would have never given Kaine a check. I would also be surprised, IMO that anyone who donated, ate there or ordered out, that day, have voiced a complaint as to how the money was divided.

I can see holding off on private searches, such as Tim Miller's group, in the beginning, while LE had organized searches underway. But we've seen plenty of families of missing children arrange for their own professional searches after some time has passed. In Kayleah Wilson's case, I think they brought in the Laura Foundation (?), for example. I can't imagine Tony or anyone else having a problem with Miller's organization. But I do think they have a problem with instigating any searching, as that would be for a not alive Kyron.

I would be surprised if anyone voiced a complaint--they would be vilified. I do think, however, that some people will be cautious in how they donate in the future...

This article was written prior to the fundraiser. It makes me think that the information was available, just not sure who wrote about it.

>>25 percent of the proceeds will go to the search for the missing boy, and to bracelets, buttons, fliers and other items that help keep Kyron's name out there.<<

Here is the actual flier. seems as though donated to the search fund was pretty clear. Search fund would include tools necessary to aid in the search for Kyron. The Search Team seemed to be featured in news, etc and they did receive a sizable donation as promised.

I think those that went to the fundraiser had the information necessary to decide if this was a good donation or not and if the money was used as advertised.

IMO, the funds were distributed as promised.

From the flier for the event:

Order products at full price and 25% of the
profit for the day will be donated to help fund
the search for 7 year old Kyron Horman who
has been missing since June 4th, 2010.

Please note that it is 25% of profit not gross sales. I think that was discussed earler.

Calendar: Kyron-related events in September

PORTLAND, Ore. – There are a number events over the next few weeks focused on Skyline School students. As such, we have compiled the following list for those who are interested:

Wednesday, Sept. 1: Godfather's Pizza Fundraiser for Kyron's search effort (see the flier)
Organizers say deliveries are part of the fundraiser, but they cannot accept cash. Each location will have a table where the public can purchase a Kyron wristband or buy raffle tickets. The fundraiser takes 25 percent of all Wednesday sales from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and donates proceeds to Kyorn's search fund. Raffle winners will be contacted Wednesday night.

KlaasKids Foundation in September, 1994, Mr. Klaas said, "We can give meaning to Polly's death and create a legacy in her name that will be protective of children for generations to come by pursuing the singular mission of stopping crimes against children." *snip*

A short video on John Walsh talking about his very first AMW episode - he knew nothing about TV...

Then there is Tim Miller who started Equusearch -

"I feel like the most blessed person in the world," he states. "I can look back at Laura's death, which took me so long to try to make any sense out of, and I can say, 'Laura, your death wasn't in vain.' *snip*

The Amber Alert -

The AMBER Alert System began in 1996 when Dallas-Fort Worth broadcasters teamed with local police to develop an early warning system to help find abducted children. AMBER stands for America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response and was created as a legacy to 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, who was kidnapped while riding her bicycle in Arlington, Texas, and then brutally murdered.

Somer Thompson Foundation started by mom Diena:

The Somer Thompson Foundation was formed in March 2010 after the abduction and murder of 7-year-old Somer Thompson. The Foundation provides education, resources and help to victims of violent crimes against children. Grants will be given to the victims' families to assist with financial hardships that come with the horror of the death of a child through stranger abduction. *snip*

ETA2: Megan's Law was much needed, despite Washington State's 1990 Comunity Protection Act which included America's first law authorizing public notification when dangerous sex offenders are released into the comunity. It was the brutal 1994 rape and murder of seven-year-old Megan Nicole Kanka by a previously registered sex offender that prompted the public demand for broad based community notification, hence bringing forth Megan's Law.

The list goes on and on. I am beyond amazed that people who have suffered the worst tragedy ever, the worst nightmare a parent could ever experience, can take that nightmare and turn it into a gift to help others - a gift that carries on the legacy of their child. When you take a tragedy and turn it into a gift that keeps on giving to others, a 'thank you' is hardly enough.

ETA: Kudos and a big 'thank you' to Kaine and Desiree for thinking of others who might be suffering the tragedy of a missing child. moo mho

all just my opinions and that kind of stuff...

If there isn't a resource in the Portland area already, I like the idea of Kaine setting up a foundation there in Kyron's name. While other organizations are national, it's good to have some sort of local resource that can step in and immediately lend assistance when and if a child or an adult in the Portland area goes missing.

The Kelly family advocated for legislation in the State of Oregon. The Tommy Law was signed into law May 25, 2001, National Missing Children Day The Tommy Law allows for education of law enforcement officials on the correct and most efficient way to respond to the report of a missing child.

It will probably take a few weeks, but I will be interested to know if Kaine and Desiree have filed for 501c3 status for the Kyron Horman Foundation.

Remember Samantha Runnion? Her mother, Erin, started The Joyful Child Foundation to honor the memory of her beloved daughter.

The Joyful Child is dedicated to protecting our nation's children from sexual abuse and abduction through programs that unite and uplift communities.

I will never forget Samantha. I attended closing arguments at Avila's trial and Erin is a class act. I admire her so much. Avila, OTOH, is a predator of the very worst kind.

You can search here, as time goes by, to see if this foundation becomes a 501 charity

You're right. From the link in Kimster's thread:

Kaine Horman and Desiree Young said the pizza restaurants will donate 25 percent of the profits for Sept. 1 to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office search and rescue team. The volunteer organization helps search for missing people and evidence at crime scenes. It spent weeks look for any trace of Kyron around the school in rural Northwest Multnomah County and other locations.

Where did that other 75% go? Sorry, I haven't read or seen the breakdown on this thread.

This boggles my mind...

Me too! If I had money to set up a foundation, I'd say "forget about that -- not until MY son is home". Why save money for future missing children, when your own son is still out there.

I'd use any resource I could get - LE or no LE. This is making me crazy!
