Tom Adkins, 45, of Hickory
The Hickory Police Department is conducting the biggest investigation of Chief Tom Adkins’ 23-year career — the Zahra Baker case.
The case of the missing Australian girl found dead and dismembered has drawn media coverage from across the country and across Australia. Adkins’ department began searching for the girl when she was reported missing on Oct. 9 and the investigation continues.
“It’s been the largest case that the Hickory Police Department has worked on during my career,” he said. “From the very beginning, Maj. Deal and Capt. Whisnant had the lead on this investigation and brought several law enforcement agencies and support organizations into the investigation and their cooperation has been an awesome thing to watch.”

New Charges may be filed against Step-Mom

A grand jury met Monday to discuss possible new charges against the stepmother of Zahra Baker, a 10-year-old disabled girl whose dismembered remains were discovered in Caldwell County Nov. 12.

Her stepmother, Elisa Baker, has already been charged with obstruction of justice after they said she admitted to writing a fake ransom note to throw off investigators Oct. 9, the same day she and Zahra's father, Adam Baker, reported the girl missing.

The grand jury will continue their discussion tomorrow.

Elisa Baker’s Aunt: Zahra Died Naturally, Bakers Panicked

http://www.wsoctv.com/news/26366558/detail.html

Elisa Baker’s aunt, Buzzie Winkler, said her niece told her Zahra Baker died after being sick. Elisa and Adam Baker then panicked, Winkler said.

“She said (Zahra) had been sick about two weeks and then they went in and found her dead that night,” Winkler, who visited Elisa Baker in jail this week, said. “And then didn't know what to do. They didn't know what to do.”

Police declined to comment on the case and the unsealed warrants. A source told Channel 9 that only a summary of the case has been presented to the district attorney. The case involves thousands more pages of information that has not yet been given to prosecutors.

Family: Stepmother says illness killed Zahra
Relatives say Bakers feared going to hospital because the girl and her father were in U.S. illegally

HICKORY Zahra Baker’s stepmother claims she found the little girl dead after an illness that lasted some two weeks, and decided in a panic to get rid of the child’s body instead of reporting the death, family members say.

Two relatives told the Observer the Bakers didn’t take Zahra to a hospital and may have feared authorities because Zahra’s father, Adam Baker, is in the country illegally, and because social workers had investigated her stepmother, Elisa Baker. The two relatives spoke on the condition of anonymity, and authorities won’t comment on the allegations.

Heartbreaking story continues to unfold

With each revelation, the last days of Zahra Clare Baker become a more twisted, miserable story of suffering and evil.

The release of search warrants authorities obtained in the investigation provides more knowledge in the 10-year-old’s death and disappearance, but the case is far from over.

Police officers and deputies have searched three counties, run down numerous leads and gathered evidence to determine the facts and who was responsible for Zahra’s death.

Then there are the comments from her father, stepmother and relatives of the pair who many people believe killed her or let her die, then dismembered her and scattered her remains in hopes nobody would find her.
