The remains of a Maine woman were among those found near a South Shore beach, law enforcement officials said Wednesday, saying she was the victim of a homicide.
At a news conference Wednesday at police headquarters in Yaphank, authorities said the remains of Megan Waterman, 22, of Scarborough, Maine, had been positively identified by the New York City medical examiner.
"The cause of death has been determined as homicide," Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said.
"We're certainly not going to discuss the manner of death," he said.
Dormer and Suffolk District Attorney Thomas Spota said officials were also close to identifying the remains of the other three skeletons found in December near Gilgo Beach.
