"Killing Field" in League City, Texas- Calder Rd Cold Cases

I did some research about a man named Roy Alan Stewart. During the times he actually wasn't incarcerated, there may be some cases previously unattributed to Stewart with which he could have been involved. The timeline isn't 100% clear (to me), but maybe I've just been reading a ton today. The link to the article is below. I didn't copy the information from the article; these are my words and my summary. Pages 4 & 9

ROY ALAN STEWART

Sexual assault, strangulation and dumping near bodies of water is his MO. If water isn't around, he finds farm areas and leaves them underneath overturned water troughs. He was known to carry his fishing poles, fishing license and toolkit with him, as an aid to provide alibi.

He had 9 arrests for sexual assault and intended sexual assault (as of the late 1970's); he killed two women in 1971, and another one in 1974 (all in Amarillo); He got out of his 99 year sentence by pleading guilty in exchange for 15 years + 1 day, and was in prison from 05/17/1975 to 09/08/1982. Shortly after his release, they began finding bodies again.

In 1988, a black woman's body was found on the border of Brazoria county near Highway 288 (which crosses I-45); due to the condition of her body, it was assumed there was a big fight/struggle prior to her death. Shortly thereafter, while under surveillance, he was pulled over in Houston while trolling an area frequented by 'ladies of the night' and his car was searched. HPD found that his windshield was broken, the dead woman's fingerprints were inside the car, and hair matching the victim's was present. Because of the search without a warrant, none of this evidence could be used.

In 1989, he was arrested for delivery of a controlled substance with a prostitute in Freeport, and was sentenced to 11 years and 5 days. He was back out of jail rather quickly though.

He was arrested again on 06/06/94 for aggravated kidnapping of a young prostitute he picked up in Bay City. He took her to his home in Brazosport, assaulted her, and tied her up but she escaped. He is eligible for parole in 2024.

If this is a big area no telling how many more bodies are out there that haven't been found! I would have taken that 10 grand and place some surveillance cameras in certain areas with a live feed at my desk while investigating. Heck worth the try!

That would be an idea, but for all the small towns with tiny budgets, it would be impossible... in addition to the marshlands and millions of nooks and crannies, you'd have cameras every five feet just to try to get every direction.

To be honest, many sections of the more southern segment of I-45 isn't even lit up at night, due to economical woes. Well, you can tell where city limit lines are, by whether or not the highway is lit. I've been staying away from there for a while, but can guess it's the same.

You go through League City, of course they're on... Dickinson: on. La Marque: partial (not near marshlands though). Bayou Vista (partial, sometimes). Galveston: partial (they're on, on the causeway, but once you hit the island, its dark).

If they can't even keep the highways lit, that will give you an idea of the feasibility of the cameras idea.

Robert Abel was a suspect in the killings for a long time. Later Tim Miller hugged Abel and apologized to him. Abel drove his golf cart over a train track in 2003 and was hit by a train. Ruled an accident. There have been no murders since.

http://www.texasmonthly.com/preview/1999-10-01/feature4

Robert Able actually died in July of 2005 according to the 48 Hours piece.

This article also mentions that Able died in 2005; http://psu-sk.tripod.com/frames/i45-calder.html

Here's something I didn't know before. This is from the article;

...Miller went on to say he was angry after he received it and more so when he went out to the property shortly afterwards. In the spot where his daughter's body had been removed by police, he had put up a wooden cross in her memory. He saw her cross had been knocked down and broken apart. In addition he came across some pornographic CD's left there as well. Most likely the same person who sent the letter also went out to the "Killing Field" to leave a calling card for Miller to find too....

I'm not sure. I wondered if he took tropheys too. It seems to be more than one perp. Could be sexual but probably not in all cases. Some appear to be more violent than others. I'm trying to sort all these out. So many!

They did put a camera on the grave of Laura Miller to see if anyone visited her. No one did.

I really think that some of these murders have been perpetrated by a member of LE. The letter to Tim Miller mentions that he "tampered with evidence" and there is a missing shirt from Laura's murder. The shirt was left before DNA was able to be extracted. Also, if someone in LE knew about the camera they wouldn't go there. So much of this reminds me of BTK.

Has anyone ever triangulated the homes of the victims? In case you aren't familiar with triangulation it's a technique used to find the area that the perp may live in. Let's say that victim one is from the north, victim 2 from the east, 3 from the west and four from the south. If you draw a circle around each victims homes it's likely that inside that circle is where the killer lives. It is also used for different body dump sites.

Of course all of this post is JMO

That would explain in at least 4 or 5 of these cases.
The females vehicles were found abandon along side the road.
In some cases doors left open, engine still running lights on etc.
As if they simply parked there car and got out and walk away.

Any blue red/ flashing lights on a dashboard would have been enough to have them pull over and get out of the vehicle without a struggle.

I don't remember ever reading about the MO in someone whom used this as a ruse. I am not sure if they would just pick a vehicle to pull over. Or if they waited and watch or stalked a female whom they wanted to pull over and kill.

Saddest part about this theory. If true.
The girls showing respect for LE by pulling over.
That same respect got them killed.

That made me so angry. This is a very cruel person!

I agree. There is no doubt in my mind that someone in LE is involved. Too big a cover up and in the Laura Miller case it became personal to someone and Tim Miller was leading searches and very vocal. More so than other families. He was stepping on toes.

I don't believe anyone has. I've never located information on any kind of trianglation. It makes sense. Are you volunteering? :floorlaugh:

I hope they will begin to look at these murders again and possibly the person(s) involved are no longer with LE. Just hoping!

It seems to me to be LE involvement and that the victims were choosen. I don't believe they were random acts. On a dark road how could they tell who was driving the car. The girls were probably followed or they were choosen ahead of time. jmo

I was searching around and found an old link from WS'ers about some cases. http://www.websleuths.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-72622.html

I am wondering if maybe we start by looking at the earliest deceased associated with the I-45 killings and my guess is his first kill like most he knew, and probably an area he lived at as a child or young adult.

Maybe killer went to school with him. Just throwing this out there.

Accused Serial Killer 'Ready' For Death Penalty

Convicted Murder Faces Life In Prison Or Death
POSTED: Friday, October 22, 2004
UPDATED: 5:44 pm CDT October 22, 2004

The former tow truck driver was found guilty of a capital murder charge in the April 1992 death of Maria Del Carmen Estrada, 21. He also is charged with killing two teenage girls and a 9-year-old girl over a nine-year span.
Prosecutors say Shore kidnapped Estrada and sexually assaulted her before leaving her body in a restaurant's drive-through lane.
Shore's attorneys have admitted that their client killed Estrada. But they said he should have been convicted only of murder, rather than capital murder, because he did not kidnap or sexually assault her. They were asking for a life sentence.

This man was a known sex offender and here's the kicker:

Waiver Let Texas Sex Offender Live Next To School
Houston Man Now Held In Serial Killings
When accused serial killer Anthony Allen Shore was placed on probation five years ago for sexually molesting two young girls in his family, he faced standard restrictions: Don't live or go within 100 yards of any place -- a school, a playground, a video arcade, a day care center, public swimming pool -- where children gather.
But for at least two, possibly three, years after his January 1998 trial, Shore lived openly, and with official blessing, in plain view of an elementary school

Identity of child still mystery

The badly decomposed body found Sunday on Chambers Creek by two fishermen is no longer believed to be that of a Dallas youngster missing since Valentine's Day, according to Navarro County Sheriff Jerry Shelton.

Investigators had first thought that the skeletal remains found in shallow water along the creek to be that of seven year old Ladena McCoy, who disappeared while on her way to school in Dallas Feb. 14.

But the Forensic Laboratory in Dallas reported to Shelton about 11 a.m. today that the body is not that of the missing girl. Law enforcement officers in Dallas, despite a massive effort, have been unable to locate a clue to the girl's whereabouts since her disappearance three months ago.

Navarro County deputies, after learning the news, began immediate plans for a careful search of the area where the body was found yesterday in an attempt to discover a clue to the identity of the body.

The basic assumption that the body was that of the Dallas girl rested on clothing found on the body and on the approximate age of the body, four to seven years of age. Dallas investigators had only those clothing samples on which to base an identification.

According to Deputy Sheriff Grady McCall, Jessie Gomez and James Moore were fishing around noon on Chambers Creek Sunday, about a mile south of where the E. 5th slab crosses the creek, when they found the body. The two men walked out to the road and flagged down a passing deputy to report the grisly discovery.

Members of the Corsicana Emergency Corps were employed to remove the body, which was done about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, McCall said.

Investigators say the body is missing one foot, and had apparently been in the water about two months before being discovered. Deputies speculated this morning that the body had not drifted "too far" from where it was placed in the water to where it was discovered Sunday.

Deputies now theorize that the child was a victim of abuse, and radio and teletype bulletins have been dispatched to all state law enforcement agencies seeking information about any missing four year old child.

Investigators were preparing to search using deputies on foot and in boats along the creek where the body was discovered.

(Judygirl Note: Body of Ladena McCoy was found eventually, murdered.)

Body that of white girl age two-four

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Corsicana Daily Sun Newspaper - Wednesday, June 1, 1977

The report from the Dallas Medical Examiners office has determined that the body found in Chambers Creek Sunday was that of a white female between the ages of two and four, according to Deputy Sheriff Gary Patterson.

Patterson said the report added that the girl could not be older than four years of age. He said that further results of lab tests are pending.

The deputy explained that inquires were beginning to come in from not only Texas but also from around the country concerning the body. Patterson said law enforcement people in San Bernadino, Calif. have inquired along with the Galveston Police Department.

No new evidence in girl's identity

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Corsicana Daily Sun - Thursday, June 9, 1977

No new evidence has turned up as Sheriff's deputies continue to search for the identity of the badly decomposed body of a four-year-old girl found May 29 in Chambers Creek east of Corsicana, according to Deputy Sheriff Joetta Price.

The body was found by two fishermen buried in debris in the creek about five miles east of Corsicana. Sheriff's Deputies Grady McCall and Bob Rehders, who are conducting the investigation, said at the time that the body had been in the water anywhere from two to four months.

The body was at first thought to be that of missing Dallas youngster, Ladina McCoy, but the Dallas Medical Examiners office ruled out that possibility early in the investigation.

Deputies are baffled about the identity of the body. Leads from around the country have not been fruitful and no child of that age has been reported in Navarro County.

The day following the discovery Sheriff Jerry Shelton, deputies and a group of reserve deputies searched the banks of Chambers Creek but did not find any evidence that would aid in identifying the body.

Deputies theorize that the child may have been a victim of child abuse which they say may account for no one coming forth to identify the body.

'Unnamed Baby Girl' leaves many questions

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Corsicana Daily Sun Newspaper - Sunday, June 19, 1977

Who was she, the little girl whose skeleton was found in Chambers Creek here three weeks ago?

Was she a happy child? Did she have a puppy or a kitty to play with? Had she already learned her letters and her numbers?

No one knows, and we're beginning to doubt that anyone will ever know.

Little is known, not the cause of her death, not even the color of her hair.

What is known? Only that she was a little girl and that she was between two and six years old, probably around four.

She was dressed in maroon pants and in a white blouse with red animals on it. Lawmen think she was probably four because the blouse is a size four. It came from Montgomery Ward's.

How could a little girl remain unidentified for several weeks, maybe even for several months since there was no way of telling how long the body had been in the waters?

Investigating deputy sheriffs say: - She could have been a victim of severe child abuse. That would account for why no one has come to identify and claim her.

She could also have been the child of a poor transient family who died and whose parents did not have money for burial. That would also account for no missing-person report.

-Or, according to Deputy Bob Rehders, she could have been "flat out murdered." The longer she remains unidentified, the less chance there is of identifying her. But Rehders says there's still a chance that information circulating on the child by the Navarro County Sheriff's Department hasn't been matched up with all the missing children reports throughout the U.S.

Which answer is most likely? Your guess is as good as the lawmen's. They don't have a thing to work on.

If the child wasn't wanted in life, she may not be wanted in death either.

Today she's in the "cooler" of the Dallas County medical examiner's office. She'll remain there until all possibility of identification is exhausted - at least another month.

Then she'll be buried as "Unnamed Baby Girl" either by Dallas or Navarro County, whichever will accept the burial expense. Navarro is more likely since she was found here.

She'll get a simple funeral and be laid to rest with no answers, but a whole lot of questions, surviving her.

Text of an article from the November 11th, 1977 Brownsville (TX) Brownsville Herald <newspaperarchive.com>:

Girl Believed Slain By Family Friend
Dallas (APJ—The family of a 9-year-old girl whose body was found Saturday near Lake Ray Hubbard believe Barbara Marsh was abducted and slain by a family friend — but they don't know which one. "We think it was a good friend mentally gone wrong who done this because Barbara wouldn't have gone with a stranger." said Betty Latham, the slain girl's sister." But Mother cautioned her a lot." Barbara was last seen Friday night as she played basketball near her East Dallas home. Some 12 hours later two fishermen stumbled upon her body — from afar they said it looked like a mannequin. The body had apparently been in the water nine or ten hours and officials said evidence at the scene indicated the young girl had been drowned while unconscious.
The death marked the third apparent abduction-slaying of young Dallas-area girls since February. The apartment complex Barbara's family lives in is some six blocks from the spot where Ladina McCoy was last seen in February. Seven year-old Ladina's body was found four months later near a Southwest Dallas creek.
In September a 12-year-old Denton girl disappeared after her mother left her with the family washing chores at an area laundromat. Suzie Mages was last seen talking with an unidentified man at a Denton fast food restaurant. Her body was found two weeks later in an Oak Cliff gravel pit. Investigators say the similarities in the three cases are disturbing, but they are not sure if the deaths are related. Friends and family remember Barbara as a loner who was often the target of her second grade classmates taunts. "She didn't have any close friends. She had friends, but the kids made fun of her, so she always played alone,"
Mrs. Latham said. And those hours of solitary play were often spent with her well-worn basketball. That ball, found abandoned near where she was playing Friday, tipped investigators that she had been abducted.

So sad. So many murders and very few of them have been solved. Two little ones never identified?

Anthony Allen Shore's Victims

Maria Carmen Del Estrada was an illegal Mexican immigrant from the state of Guerrero who came to the United States to have a better life. She was a small, petite woman, standing at a height of 5 foot 1 inch and weighing 104 pounds. She was only twenty one years old, and worked as a nanny with her best friend, Rosa. On April 16, 1992, Carmen's half naked body was found in back of a Dairy Queen. She had been found sexually assaulted.

Diana Rebollar, 9 years old, lived in the Heights area of Houston, at the front of a small duplex. One day, she headed out to the neighborhood store to buy a bag of sugar. Employees of the store saw her leaving the store safely, but she never returned home. She was found the next day behind a house that was known to be occupied by the homeless. One lead for police was given by a neighbor who described a van that frequented the area. She was connected to the Carmen Del Estrada case by the killer's method of operation, since a tourniquet was used as the murder weapon. Diana was murdered two years after Carmen.

Dana Sanchez was walking to her boyfriends house when Shore offered her a ride in his car. He made advances to her, but she told him that she had a boyfriend. She was never seen again. Seven days later an anonymous caller (Shore) led them to the highly decomposed body of Sanchez.

More on Anthony Allen Shore

In 2000, detectives pulled Carmen Del Estrada's case from the cold files and tested DNA evidence from underneath Carmen's fingernails and received a full genetic profile. Carmen's case grew cold, and would remain in the cold files for eight years.

The profile was upload to Texas's DNA database, which contains all the DNA profiles of sexual offenders. Shore's DNA was in the database from a previous conviction of molesting his two daughters for which he was offered a plea bargain that resulted in probation. His DNA matched the DNA underneath Carmen's fingernails and he was arrested for her murder.

Eleven hours into his interrogation, Shore confessed to the murders of Carmen Del Estrada, Diana Rebollar and Dana Sanchez. He also confessed to the 1987 murder of fourteen year old Laurie Tremblay and the 1994 rape of a fourteen year old girl. Laurie Tremblay was walking to school when she was killed and dumped behind a Mexican restaurant. Detectives had no way of linking this killing to the other three murders, since Laurie was strangled with a ligature. When asked why he switch to a tourniquet, Shore replied, "because I hurt my finger while murdering Tremblay"

Birth: 1950

Unsolved Triple Homicide.

Karen was a loving mother. She was murdered along with her two young sons, Scott and Mark. Her husband, Robert Pretty, says he came home from work to find his family deceased. The county medical examiner, Dr. Jospeh Jachimezek, ruled that the deaths were from a combination of strangulation and suffocation by drowning. The main clue in the three deaths was the family's 1978 Mercury Marquis, which was found in an unassigned parking space at an apartment house. There was no sexual assault or robbery. One theory is that this may have been a hit which was intended on another family. Apparently there was an informant in the neighborhood who caused the arrest of a known drug dealer, Anthony, who is now deceased. The people who committed this crime may have been from another state which might explain them getting the wrong house. However, this is just a theory. If you have heard or know anything that may solve this case, please call the number below. You may even do this anonymously. The family of the victims has been suffering for 20 years now.
