Australia Samantha Murphy, 51, last seen leaving her property to go for a run in the Canadian State Forest, Ballarat 100km NW of Melbourne, 4 Feb 2024 #2

Four days ago it was reported that detectives would begin looking into Samantha's computer history, phone data, and her movements in the days leading up to her disappearance. I wonder if they found something that has now led them to declare her disappearance suspicious.
I was also thinking about this, and agree … and Police may also have data back from the watch, phone, and ear buds by now …

I am wondering if it may be business related ..??? A disgruntled customer??

IMO

Re the business… most trades have a decent amount of cash in hand jobs that don’t go thru the books. MM wouldn’t have been watching what SM was doing with the accounts. It’s possible she squirrelled away some $$$.

IMOO someone else involved.. I think VPOL allowed for wasted time in the first few days of SM disappearance. Missing persons and homicide should’ve been working together with local police from the start.. I feel for her family, especially her children
BBM

Agree totally, and I had thought that Police in Australia were doing better these days, than with previous missing person’s cases … by involving units like homicide from the beginning ….

MOO

Whoah boy, this News Corpse headline is woeful: ‘SUSPICIOUS’: Cops reveal major development in case of missing mum

It's not a major development :( Woeful click bait.

I hope it's strategic of them to drop in the word "suspicious" with no actual developments, otherwise it feels a little scattered.
Allegedly it came from the Top Brass …

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton told reporters on Wednesday the investigation had reached a new stage.

More here:

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton told reporters on Wednesday the investigation had reached a new stage.

His comments came as detectives from Victoria Police's MIssing Persons Unit attended the Murphy property on Wednesday morning, spending more than an hour inside before leaving.

Ms Murphy's husband Mick Murphy, who continues to be supported by family members, is understood to be co-operating with the specialised unit, which is attached to Victoria Police's Homicide Squad.

Daily Mail Australia is not suggesting Mr Murphy has anything to do with the disappearance of his wife.

The DM has gone a step further than suspicious!

They have specifically stated at the top of the headline that "Search for Ms Murphy now focused on her friends and family".

IMO it could be interpreted that they (DM) are practically saying Police are zeroing in on MM now.

VPOL did the same with mushroom lady Erin Patterson. The case wasn’t treated as suspicious until some time went by and only survivor was discharged from hospital. Then VPOL moved in and arrested her. One never knows what’s hiding in the background until it’s unpacked. Whatever VPOL have they’ll be keeping it closed off from public and possibly drip feed media from time to time.

So sad… if they only evidence VPOL have point back to home there’s your new line of inquiry…

What does declaring it as suspicious mean in an official sense? From the start hasn’t it been suspicious? Is this a less direct way of saying they’re looking at it as a homicide?

I think it means that they are putting the pressure on someone.

They have no need to tell us if Sam's disappearance is "suspicious" or not.

The police only release info if it serves a purpose for them. imo

They haven't asked for any further public help in today's announcement (which I just heard on Triple J news, so it is hitting many news sources) - they just suddenly announced that it's looking "suspicious".

My first thought was that they may have dropped the word "suspicious" as a way to make someone panic and slip up, because they suspect someone but don't have enough proof to make an arrest.

Yes, they usually hope for a confession, or for some nervous reaction (like checking on the hidden remains, or hiding something incriminating, or fleeing the area) after such an announcement. imo

I think the metadata might have provided the police with some useful information.

If VPOL have come this far and zeroed in on friends and family, I suspect in a few weeks the public will know what happened to SM.

I agree about putting pressure on someone. And you’re right about only releasing Information that serves a purpose to them.

Now someone might start feeling the heat and do something out of character or unusual. Like in the Carol and Russell case when all of a sudden they released the info about car/truck (whatever you call it, I know nothing about vehicles lol) that sent Greg into a tail spin cos all of a sudden he knew they were onto him. I get similar vibes from this.

VicPol suspends the search, they go quiet, then all of a sudden it’s suspicious without any further calls for public help.

Hourglass time IMO.

I guess that
Missing Persons' Team
is now officially replaced by Homicide Team.

JMO
Not necessarily IMO, the Missing Persons Squad may continue to have carriage of the investigation.
The detectives that led the investigation into Clay/Hill disappearance were from the Missing Persons Squad.

IIRC (stretching the memory here) Missing Persons also ran the Ristevski investigation.

I agree.

Also if they suspected any danger lurking in the forest or surrounding areas and a stranger abduction, they would close the area to the public or at least advise people of possible danger and to only enter in groups IMO

Well, I hope they do have a lead. I don't think she is alive. The news about the dog being euthanized as well - so awful. For some reason I've never felt like her spouse was part of her disappearance but this is more of a feeling rather than based on any particular facts. Husband 'helping with enquiries' could mean a lot of things. Can't shake the idea of it being linked to cold case in same area. I can imagine everyone in the area, especially women, would be feeling on edge. I hope her kids are ok.

New Article

Chief Commissioner Shane Patton said at a press conference on Wednesday there had been no new information gathered by the Missing Persons Squad.

It’s certainly unusual when we haven’t been able to locate any trace of her or any other evidence within that period of time,” he said.

“It’s suspicious, whether that means there’s foul play involved, or not, I don’t know, but obviously detectives are investigating a matter where a woman’s been missing for a significant period of time.”

It was reported on Wednesday that detectives went to the Murphy family home in the morning and spent more than an hour inside.

There have been no breakthroughs in the search for the mother-of-three despite a multi-agency operation and huge community efforts.

Ms Murphy, 51, is believed to have left her Eureka St home for a run about 7am on February 4 but never returned.

Note the wording change in the last paragraph…..???? “Believed” ???

Are Police putting pressure on someone with today’s announcement???

IMO
