GUILTY PA - Stephanie Waters, 21, Roaring Spring, 8 Jan 2015

New word from New Enterprise via word-of-mouth: There have been two recent attempted abductions of Mennonite girls on bicycles. (We have an Amish & Mennonite population in the area.) Is there any connection? Probably not. Just throwing more info out there.

GUILTY PA - Stephanie Waters, 21, Roaring Spring, 8 Jan 2015

Based on the home-locations of the two juveniles, the one from Martinsburg probably attends Central High School (located in Martinsburg, but about 5 minutes from Roaring Spring, where Stephanie reportedly lived), while the one from Woodbury probably attends Northern Bedford County High School...

MI school shut down - can't make payroll

I read about this district earlier, but all the teachers had agreed to remain on the job, unpaid, until the end of the year. They put the students first--above their own families--to keep those kids on-track and eliminate the possibility of all of them "losing a year" (being forced to repeat...

CVS employees must reveal body weight or pay higher premiums

This was happening BEFORE the Affordable Care Act. I was subjected to it starting in the early 2000s while President Bush was still in office. It's all about the profits for the insurance company--that's all it has ever been about. When they started charging higher premiums in the 1990s for...

MD - 7yr old suspended for shaping his pastry like a gun

It isn't the teachers--it's the administrators that make these decisions. I'm convinced that once someone gets his/her administration papers, he/she is required to turn in all memories of being a teacher and any general common sense he/she possesses.

Schools shift from textbooks to tablets

For those of us in low-socio-economic status schools, this is a "pie-in-the-sky" dream. We just replaced textbooks from 1996 last year; they were falling apart. On-line texts are great, but you only have access for a limited number of years AND you have to pay for EVERY student that uses one...

School Ad Excludes Whites From Tutoring Program

My take? I think they are fearful of an AYP subgroup not making proficiency. There are huge penalties involved. Three subgroups hitting many schools hard are: minorities, special education, and low socio-economic status. Clearly this principal needs some help "thinking outside the box"!

Fire completely destroys Crestline Elementary School in Vancouver

Scholastic is very good about donating to schools in situations like these. Perhaps when the time comes, your cousin could contact them.

Prince George’s County Board of Education to copyright work

I worked briefly as a substitute in a school district with a policy very similar to this one. They actually claimed anything I brought in the building with me--even if the materials were developed by me at home or at another school! It made me limit what I was willing to use. My current...

Panetta removes military ban on women in combat

I am very pleased to see this. For years women HAVE been in combat; however, the "law" was being used to deny them combat pay and promotions that men get for serving "in theatre." Now the military will have to pay, promote and award medals EQUALLY to women who serve. It's about time!

College student's turtle project takes dark twist

Some people are just plain mean! Fortunately, there are others out there who seek solutions. The link below explains how a new road in my home county was inadvertently placed between the Juniata River and prime egg-laying territory for turtles. A kinder, gentler solution was sought...

AUS 14yr old Boy dies in 118F heat on hike with father

I can totally relate to this situation. My dad always insisted on taking vacation in July and August in some of the hottest places imaginable. One year, he made us hike in Death Valley. My father didn't have a clue that this wasn't a good idea. Another year it was Dinosaur Nat...

    Hurricane Sandy updates

Power is back on in our Central PA neighborhood. It was out for around 14 hours. When I called it in, Penelec's message said 3-5 days! 20,000 Penelec customers still out in the area according to the TV. I'm now debating what to keep and what to throw out from the refrigerator. . . .Hmmm...

Texas school district, community at odds over student tracking badges

I admit I lost a kid on Thursday. He came to class without a book for sustained silent reading, so I gave him a pass to the library and told him not to come back w/o a book. He came back without a book. I asked him why he had no book, and he told me the librarian wouldn't let him check...
