I'm not surprised that he waived his right to a prelim, I'm sure there is enough evidence to proceed to trial, even without the fact that it is rumoured he confessed to the crimes (not sure if it was ever verified that he did confess).

Im thinking he waived his rights to a prelim as he will plead guilty to all charges and avoid a trial. JMO

This is very interesting. I suggest using "Russ" as the search term on this page:

http://www.admfincs-smafinsm.forces.gc.ca/aip/cr-dc-eng.asp

Quickly, now, before it's gone. So here's the thing. Those files pertaining to RW have 2009 dates. That's before JL was murdered.

There has to be a mistake here. Note what I underlined below from the page. How can they be requesting documents in 2009 for data dating from the following year, specifically beginning the month that RW was arrested?

Obtain all documents, Briefing Notes, etc. produced, sent and/or received by the Chief of the Defence Staff Walter Natyncyk or his office regarding Colonel D.R. (Russ) Williams since 1 February 10

Went to your link, no "search" term place that I could see...Saved the entire page that came up on your link though, if anyone needs to see it.

Use your browser's "Edit" and "Find" functions and the appropriate section will be highlighted.

More clarification:

If you look at the page carefully, it states at the top,

"The requests are displayed by the year and the month when they became available for public release."

Under "Summaries of Completed Access to Information Requests", you can see that this page refers to the year 2010 in the month of July.

Further down the page is Request #A-2009-00944:

Details where Col. Russell Williams was posted to learn French during the year 09: where he was taught, & went for immersion, the complete address where he stayed while learning French at CFB Valcartier and/or elsewhere in Québec
Again, information is requested for the full year of 2009 and would have had to be filed in 2010.

Between those two requests is Request #A-2009-00938

Any records by 8 Wing Commander Col. Russ Williams concerning the death of Cpl. Marie-France Comeau.

There are a couple of other requests having to do with RW on this page. It seems apparent to me that they all took place after he was charged and arrested in 2010.

The Request # seems to have nothing to do with dates.

What does this have to do with anything? Well, for one thing, we've noted a number of scandals involving prominent members of the Canadian military since and including RW. For another, this unit is in the process of relocating to CFB Trenton, where RW was in command of 8 Wing. And finally, as we know, RW himself had spent time in and shuttling to and from Afghanistan. Consider it background noise:

I hope someone will be able to explain this. What would happen if someone who stands accused of murder had sought help for some issues from a counsellor prior to the crime(s) in question? Would professional confidentiality preclude such information from being used as evidence in a trial? Would this apply only to people such as licensed psychologists, or clergy? Could LE subpoena records from other types of counsellors who are not guided by a professional code of conduct, such as lay ministers, or those who do mediation with a psychology background? What if this counselling was couples counselling?

I keep wondering about the baby blanket. Then I read today's news about another high-profile case and, er, um, ahem, splutter. :silenced:

Well what do you know....

Russ Williams hires lawyer to defend him in civil lawsuit

Col. Russ Williams has hired a lawyer to defend him in a civil lawsuit launched by one of his alleged home-invasion victims.

Williams, 47, and his wife, Mary-Elizabeth Harriman, 52, of Ottawa are being sued for $2.45 million by a Hastings County woman.

As first reported Wednesday on The Intelligencer's website, Williams is now defended by Ottawa lawyer Pat Santini, according to a document filed Wednesday in Belleville Superior Court.

Santini, who is out of the country on vacation for the week, declined a request for an interview Wednesday.

"I have no comments to make," Santini wrote in an e-mail message to The Intelligencer.

Fifth Estate is doing a program on RW tonight. They interview his former best friend and CO.

In the preview here, there is an interview with the man who seen RW's SUV parked beside Jessica's home that night, at 3 am, in the laneway. He called in the tip as soon as he heard of her being missing, when he returned from his trucking job. The "white truck" rumour abounded at the time Jessica was missing, but I think everyone assumed it was indeed a truck, not an SUV.

Mr. Barker's tip, is the tip that lead them to search for the tire tracks at the roadside check. It lead to the arrest of RW.

LE also says now, that it was RW who told them where Jessica was.

It looks like they are going to do a reenactment. :-(

"I have no comments to make," Santini wrote in an e-mail message to The Intelligencer.

Santini is a senior litigation partner at Ottawa's Kelly Santini law firm. The firm maintains one of eastern Ontario's largest insurance defence practices, according to its website.

That motion is to be heard Oct. 19 in Belleville.

But in the meantime, Williams' criminal case will return to superior court here Oct. 7. The colonel has waived his right to a preliminary hearing, meaning the case will eventually proceed to trial.

The Oct. 7 appearance is in assignment court, a phase in which dates for pre-trial hearings, pleas and trials are typically set.

Police continue to investigate Williams.

"Russ Williams' case is still ongoing," Sgt. Kristine Rae, the eastern region spokewoman for the Ontario Provincial Police, said Wednesday.

"There is nothing new to report," she said, adding that applies to both the cases now before the courts and one probing potential links to other criminal cases.

She said no new charges have been laid against Williams since April and it isn't known when the cold-case investigation will end.

On Aug. 9, 2009 in Brighton, Ont., former 8 Wing-CFB Trenton's base commander Col. Russell Williams (left) signed a banner that was going to be sent to Canadian troops serving in Afghanistan. During a photo op with Mayor of Brighton Christine Herrington and MP for Northumberland/Quinte West Rick Norlock, Col. Williams said: Having received one of these banner before, I can say that it s really going to have an impact. That link to the local community is hugely important.

after watching the fifth estate piece aired tonight. IF this piece is FACTUAL what I see is an increase in severity and incidence of crimes committed by this man as his career stress increased.
On his now hiring a lawyer to respond to the "civil " suit, it's just a ploy to protect ( his) and his wife's financial future or what's left of it.

Shaking my head here, he doesn't deserve any future, and if I were his wife, I'd cut my losses and run for the hills . It would be far less stressful to remove yourself than to try and protect your financial loss.. (in my own very humble opinion)
Either way, it appears justice will be served. If you are to believe what this TV program put forth as evidence.

(BBM)

Just to clarify: It has been reported right from the time of the arrest that RW "led" LE to the location of Jessica's remains. Whether he told them verbally in Ottawa, or physically led them there in person has never been made clear. This is from a February 11th news report:

Sources have told CBC News that murder suspect Col. Russell Williams led police to the body of Jessica Lloyd, one of his alleged victims.

Thanks for the heads up about The Fifth Estate. It was interesting to watch. We finally saw more shots of MEH and I learned that it was not only underwear that had been stolen.

As 2010 began, Jessica Elizabeth Lloyd was in the midst of pursuing the life she wanted. She was working in administration at a local student bussing company, had recently bought a new car and bought and moved into the Lloyd homestead. She was loved by many friends. When she went missing January 29th, hundreds of people took part in around-the-clock searching for her. She was found murdered in Tweed, Ontario following the February 7th arrest of Russell Williams.

Cpl. Marie France Comeau was born March 19th, 1971 into a family with rich military roots. Both her father and grandfather were serving men. She grew up in Canada and Germany, and acquired a love of learning about new cultures. Though she wasn't pressured to carry on the tradition, she joined the Canadian Forces when she was 26 and pursued a career in the Air Force. She was drawn to travel and aspired to experiencing the world. Loved ones describe her as being both professional and laid back, an artist, an existentialist, an explorer, a fashionista, and a dreamer. She was murdered between November 24th and 25th, 2009.
