Because the goal of a gazillion threads is within our reach in our lifetimes!
Sorry, my head exploded toward the last of thread #12.
It is a decision taken on my part as a matter of easier organization and assimilation of the myriad ideas put forth by many posters to keep threads in the 500-600 post range.
Respectfully, and very gently...keep in mind that you can't see me smiling friendly, helpful vibes.

IMO and experience, it causes more frequent disruption in the flow of convos on a plethora of sub-topics (so, many many convos get disrupted more often). It makes it MUCH harder and time-consuming to search (have to individually search multiple threads, or the whole forum, instead of using the thread search function within a particular thread). It makes it MUCH more time-consuming to quote posts from the last previous thread, and many posters don't even know how to do that.
Lastly, it is so incredibly frustrating to have the new thread open while the old thread is open for more than a few minutes...leaving 2 "versions" open...posters are "left behind" and posting away on the previous thread...and posts get missed when posters don't realize the prev thread wasn't quickly locked. Please, please, please don't unlock the new thread (making it available to be posted into by anyone) without closing the previous one fairly quickly.
These concerns are irrelevant in non-sleuthing threads (the non-crime threads), IMO. For sleuthing threads, JMO, it is crucial to make it as easy as possible to communicate. Having shorter threads just feels like putting unnecessary roadblocks into the flow of communication.
And all these concerns are exacerbated exponentially when there are many, many posts within a short timeframe (popular, "high profile" cases).
JMO but I prefer that Mickey has her own forum (even tho there are drawbacks to that approach, as well). If Mickey can't have her own forum, then please let her threads have 750-1,000 posts (like most "high profile" cases here).
All of this is just my opinion, which is based upon my experience here at WS and other large forums.
Just a gentle suggestion: perhaps the opening post of the new thread could be prepared/updated and locked until the previous thread can be closed in a timely manner. Those 3 final actions (post link to new thread, close/lock old thread, unlock new thread) could then be done by any mod who becomes available whenever.

I'm afraid to check back for the tomatoes...but they go good in salad.
