Donna Summer passes away at 63

I remember DJ'ing a party at a lake for my friend Greg's birthday; this was 1980 so I mostly played what we loved - punk and what was then called "new wave"; but the best thing I did select to play was Donna Summers's "I Feel Love" - the sound of that music across the rippled water, shimmering in the night, was sublime.

The first time I saw Donna Summer was in the movie "Thank God it's Friday". I loved that movie. I couldn't wait to hear more of her music. My favorite song was "Last Dance". ~RIP Donna~ You were such a talented Lady!

RIP Donna!

I enjoyed dancing in the disco's to your wonderful voice! Thanks for sharing your talent with all of the world!

Sad to hear of her passing. I remember her well from the disco days and the fact that her songs are still well known these days. One of my fondest memories of my late fiance was after Katrina when we lived on the cruise ship. We had a cd with some of donna's music on it.

For some reason the song "Hot Stuff" always gave my fiance the urge to get up and do a hilarious dance reminiscent of the Full Monty. To this day I can't hear "Hot St.uff" without imagining him dancing around seductively and provocatively around our cabin.

Thanks for the great music and the memories Donna!! RIP

rest in peace dear lady.

A class act, a beautiful talented lady.

I am so sad.

When a friend was getting surgery by my dr. so was Donna in GA.
I got to see her being snuck in.

I will miss her music.

Warm wishings and blessings to her family.

Donna Summer for musicos:

Donna Summer's disco was as radical as punk (Guardian)
Donna Summer will be remembered as the queen of disco, but in fact her best records transformed not just dancefloors but the course of pop music. Released in 1977, the year of punk, her single I Feel Love was as radical as any record that has got to No 1. Sparks were a glam rock band until they heard I Feel Love, when they decided to throw their entire musical direction in the dustbin and make pulsing, synthesised disco records with its producer, Giorgio Moroder. Seeking to assert his credentials as a man of impeccable musical taste, Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream used to boast that he had bought both I Feel Love and the Sex Pistols' God Save the Queen on the same day.
---
Working from the unlikely location of Munich, the trio managed to fuse soul with the surgical precision of Kraftwerk, creating a record so far ahead of its time that pop took a good 20 years to catch up. Like the Beach Boys' Good Vibrations, I Feel Love is a studio recording so perfect that covering it – or even playing it live – would be pointless, though many have tried.

only 63 ... too soon, way too soon

She did not have one bad song-Love rollerskating to her back in the day!!!

RIP-Disco Queen

Wow, how sad. I too remember roller skating to her songs. RIP Queen of Disco :(

My all time favorite performer. A beautiful woman with a beautiful voice and a fantastic sense of humor.

In 1996, I saw her perform live in Philadelphia. She opened with "This Time I Know It's for Real," and came out descending stairs while wearing a gorgeous white dress. It was like an angle was descending from Heaven.

Here is a phenomenal clip from 1980, "Sunset People, and the ultimate, "Bad Girls." [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2IaAWicaes"]Donna Summer Special - "Sunset People" & "Bad Girls" - YouTube[/ame]

I am absolutely crushed by her passing, but am extremely grateful for the forty years of music she gave us.

Note that in the Bad Girls video, the "john" in the sailor uniform is Bruce Sudano, who was Donna's husband of nearly 32 years.

JJ, Thanks for that lil tidbit. That's Sudano, huh? Lord knows they made some gorgeous girls together. All three of her grown girls are absolutely beautiful.

There's just no words. Donna Summer brought us up. I remember my friend telling us as if it were secret that Summer was not truly LaDonna's name as if she wasn't allowed to use the American version of Sommer. We loved her so that we'd read everything we could get our hands on.

May she rest in peace and know she went leaving people of all generations thrilled by her music.

On a little inside my dad was no disco fan. Heck he hated anything written past I guess 1950. I came in from work I guess it was 1979 maybe? He's got a tape in. A VCR tape and him and mom are watching. It was a Donna Summer special. It may have been later. I think Fairey Tale High is on it. My dad actually taped it for me, but he admittedly thought Donna Summer was a true artist with fierce range.

Hoping she's wearing that tiara up in heaven.

As I always liked to call her:

Thanks for finding it! That's my all-time favorite of hers. When she performed it live on a TV show a few years ago, I was dancing along and my young daughter got a kick out of it. I have this album! RIP Donna, you and Robin Gibb. Disco will never be the same.
