Detroit— Nearly a thousand people came together Monday at Solomon's Temple for the funeral of two slain Hamtramck women found in shallow graves last month after being abducted in late February.

Filling most seats on the ground floor and spilling into the balcony, family and friends celebrated the lives of Abreeya Brown, 18, and Ashley Conaway, 22, while calling for an end to area violence. A slideshow of photographs rotated images of the two young women near the altar...

New arrests made in kidnapping, murders of Hamtramck women

The written story at the link isn't very helpful (as a matter of fact I found it confusing), but the video is. Apparently two new arrests have been made related to the case. The names aren't mentioned though.

While there don't appear to have been any actual charges made yet, this looks good on the Detroit police, as I am sure they are understaffed and underpaid in a challenging environment.

The video also contains an interview with a man (identity disguised) who lives near where the bodies were found. He said that on the night of the murders he saw 4 cars drive in fast and then he heard a series of pops. He estimates that there were around 3 shots fired.

Clearly the witness is afraid. It seems that he didn't call the police that night. If he had, then poor Abreeya and Ashley's families wouldn't have had to endure those weeks of not knowing what happened to them. I wonder what prompted the man to speak to the media now. (Sorry if this was previously reported since I haven't had a chance to check out all of the past media reports.) Of course all of this presumes that this witness is telling the truth, but I don't know what he would gain by lying.

Abreeya and Ashley were shot in the head and buried about a foot and a half deep. Where their bodies were found:

Here's wishing for a speedy, successful resolution to this terrible case.

Jury not sworn in properly, so man convicted in 2 Hamtramck murders gets new trial

Tony Briscoe/The Detroit News

Detroit — A man sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murders of two women in Hamtramck will get a new trial because his jury was not properly sworn in, the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled in an opinion released Tuesday.

In December 2012, Brandon Cain, 29, was sentenced to life in prison connection with the deaths of best friends Abreeya Brown, 18, and Ashley Conaway, 22, who were found fatally shot in a wooded area of Detroit’s far west side.

A Wayne County Circuit Court jury convicted Cain on charges of first-degree murder, torture, unlawful imprisonment and felony firearm charges in their murders.

In a written opinion, Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Cynthia Diane Stephens found that Wayne County Circuit Judge Vonda Evans’ clerk had erred in swearing in the jury, so Cain should have a new trial...
