Penn State "looking into" McQueary's assertion that he spoke to police in 2002

Penn State spokeswoman Jill Shockey said university officials hadn't heard about the claims made by Mike McQueary in an e-mail obtained by The Associated Press Tuesday.

"We were not aware of any of these previous statements, and we are looking into them," Shockey said Wednesday morning.

Mike McQueary's statement to police doesn't say he stopped attack, notified police about Sandusky allegations

Penn State assistant football coach Mike McQueary never mentioned that he talked to police in 2002 after witnessing an alleged sexual assault by Jerry Sandusky of a young boy, according to a hand-written statement McQueary gave to police during the recent grand jury investigation.

The Patriot-News has viewed a copy of the statement and verified it through a source close to the investigation.

He does not mention stopping the assault, and does not mention talking to any police officers in the following days, the statement says.

3-27-2012: Sandusky Labeled "Likely Pedophile" in 1998
The finding by State College, Pa., psychologist Dr. Alycia A. Chambers, the therapist for one of Sandusky’s alleged victims, was contained in the internal Penn State files of a 1998 police investigation of the former coach for showering and bear hugging her client and another young boy in the school’s athletic locker room.
...After meeting with her client in her office and talking to his mother, Chambers described in her written report how Sandusky had coaxed the boy into the shower after a workout, telling him, “All the guys do.” He then moved closer to him, squeezing him tightly from behind while they were both naked. The boy also told Chambers how, during their workout, Sandusky had kissed him on the forehead and told him, ‘I love you.” He also invited the boy back to his house to “sit on his lap” and go “online” on his “cool computer,” the boy’s mother told Chambers, recounting her conversation with her son the previous night.

3-29-2012: Judge Delays Sandusky Penn State Trial Till June
In an online filing, Judge John Cleland ordered the trial's start in the Centre County Court of Common Pleas moved back to June 5 from May 15.
A court spokeswoman had no details about the logistical issues. Joe Amendola, Sandusky's attorney, was not immediately available to comment, and a spokesman for the attorney general had no comment.
Amendola asked last week that the charges against Sandusky be dismissed. He specifically raised questions about the validity of charges tied to three of the boys. Amendola's motions in the case are still scheduled to be heard on April 5, Cleland's order said. Prosecutors filed their response on Thursday.


3-30-2012: Attorney General Lists 33 instances of possible perjury
Prosecutors today filed a document listing 33 statements made by two Penn State administrators to support the perjury charges against the men, accused of lying to a grand jury investigating child sex abuse allegations against a former assistant football coach.
A second document defended the case and said a judge should not dismiss the charges.
The statements laid out by the state Attorney General's Office are from January 2011, when Athletic Director Tim Curley and former Vice President Gary Schultz appeared before a secret grand jury investigating Jerry Sandusky....
Many of the statements downplay the seriousness of a report Curley and Schultz fielded from graduate assistant Mike McQueary, who said he saw Sandusky in the football team shower with a boy a decade ago.


3-31-2012: Prosecutors Say Officials Lied Multiple Times
In response to a petition by Curley and Schultz to have the charges against them dropped, the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office provided a list of 15 times in which they said Curley lied to the grand jury, and 18 for Schultz.
For example, prosecutors said that when an attorney asked if then-graduate assistant Mike McQueary "did not specifically tell you there was anal intercourse occurring between Jerry Sandusky and this child," Curley lied when he responded with, "Absolutely not, that he did not tell me that."
When Schultz was asked if McQueary had related what he saw when Sandusky and a boy were allegedly showering together on campus, the former head of campus security responded: "No. My recollection was McQueary and Joe (Paterno) both only described what was observed in a very general way. There was no details."

Patriot-News crime reporter Sara Ganim has earned another top journalism honor for her coverage of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
Ganim on Monday received the 2012 Distinguished Writing Award for Local Accountability Reporting from the American Society of News Editors.
 
4-3-2012: Prosecution Asks Court Not To Dismiss Perjury Charges
In a response to the defendant's request for a Bill of Particulars on Friday in Dauphin County, the Attorney General's office, prosecution for the case, submitted its response with "Exhibit A" – Tim Curley's testimony to the Grand Jury, and Exhibit B – Gary Schultz's testimony to the Grand Jury, both dated Jan. 12, 2011.
The prosecution said that the defendant "attempts to take advantage of the death of a Commonwealth witness, Joseph V. Paterno," in reference to Curley's request that former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno's testimony be thrown out.
According to the document, the prosecution said the statements support the perjury charges against the men because of their answers before the Grand Jury regarding what then-graduate assistant Mike McQueary told Curley and Schultz he saw in the locker room involving Jerry Sandusky and an unidentified boy, known only as Victim 2.

...on Wednesday morning, Nov., 9, Paterno announced that he intended to retire at season's end, saying, "This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more." He also said that the trustees had more important things to attend to than worrying about his future.
Many of the trustees, particularly Corbett, several trustees said, reacted with fury at what they saw as Paterno's act of defiance. One trustee equated the coach's statement about retiring at season's end and the board's priorities as an act of "insubordination."
"We couldn't have him on the sidelines," Clemens says, "acting like nothing happened."
"He kicked sand in our faces," says Edward P. Junker, an emeritus board member and the retired vice chairman of PNC Bank Corp. "After he made that statement, it certainly sealed the deal as far as the trustees were concerned."

On the Saturday morning of the Nov. 12 Nebraska game -- the first Penn State game without Paterno on the staff since 1949 -- Bob Capretto, a 65-year-old former Penn State player who admittedly "loves Joe Paterno," had a conversation with Corbett, whom he considers a friend. Capretto says he asked Corbett, "Who told the board to fire Joe and fire Spanier?"
"And the governor said, 'I told them to do it,'" Capretto says. "He was proud of it. I told him, 'You don't realize what you have created here. The damage to Penn State is enormous.'"

“ESPN’s report from the grassy knoll merely adds another chapter to the growing list of conspiracy theories surrounding the Sandusky case,” Kevin Harley, a spokesman for the governor, said Wednesday.
“It is a disappointment to read something so long, filled with so many errors, that offers so little by way of new or even real fact.
“The fact remains that Jerry Sandusky is charged with serious crimes of sexually abusing children, and that the evidence against him is overwhelming,” Harley said.

Boardmembers deny governor forced firing of Paterno, Spanier
“Corbett never told us what to do,” said Paul Silvis, a trustee who lives in Patton Township. “He voted and agreed with our decision.”
That decision was made and announced the night of Nov. 9 at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel after days of conference calls and closed-door meetings.
As governor, Corbett is an ex-officio trustee, and he participated in the Nov. 9 meeting by conference call. He has said he told the board that they should “remember the children.”
A spokesman for the Paterno family said the Paternos are reviewing the report and are “surprised and concerned.”
 
4-5-2012: Sandusky Pretrial Hearing
Sandusky's attorney, Joe Amendola, asked Senior Judge John Cleland to deny the motion to dismiss the charges without prejudice, meaning it can be refiled. Amendola reiterated his request for sequestering the jury.
Senior Judge John Cleland didn't rule on anything today. He said his ruling likely will come next week because of other unrelated court matters he must attend to.
This morning, Amendola told the judge he's withdrawing motions to suppress evidence taken during a search of Sandusky's home in June 2011. Amendola acknowledged that a search warrant was obtained legally.

4-5-2012: Another Court Appearance for Sandusky
Within 20 minutes the hearing was over and Jerry Sandusky was headed back home where he is under house arrest.
As the judge said, this is a case that is still in flux, meaning there is still an active grand jury investigation that could lead to even more charges.

4-5-2012: Grand Jury Probe Hampers Sandusky Pretrial Hearing
Sandusky arrived at court dressed in a dark suit, white shirt and tie.
Lawyers in the courtroom in Bellefonte, Pa., are arguing over a number of issues, including whether items found by prosecutors in a search of Sandusky's home can be admitted into evidence.
Defense attorney Joe Amendola also has asked Pennsylvania Judge John Cleland to throw out some critical evidence gathered by prosecutors, including electronic intercepts of telephone conversations involving alleged victims and Sandusky.

USA Today: Witness who spurred Sandusky probe could testify Tuesday

The witness, designated in a Pennsylvania grand jury report as "Victim 1," has alleged that Sandusky abused him during a period of four years, starting when the witness was 11 years old.

When the boy's mother became suspicious of Sandusky's alleged behavior, prosecutors have said that she took her son — despite concerns of school officials supportive of Sandusky — to state youth authorities in 2008, prompting the criminal investigation that ultimately resulted in 52 charges against the coach, involving 10 alleged victims during a 15-year period.

The witness's expected appearance follows the detailed testimony Monday of another alleged victim who told jurors that he was forced into about 50 sexual encounters by Sandusky during the course of five years, beginning when he was about 12 years old.

(CNN) -- Vicky Triponey knows all too well the power Penn State's late football coach, Joe Paterno, held for more than half a century over the insular slice of central Pennsylvania that calls itself Happy Valley.

She experienced firsthand the clubby, jock-snapping culture, the sense of entitlement, the cloistered existence. It's what drove her five years ago from her job as the vice president who oversaw student discipline.

She was told she was too aggressive, too confrontational, that she wasn't fitting in with "the Penn State way."

She clashed often with Paterno over who should discipline football players when they got into trouble. The conflict with such an iconic figure made her very unpopular around campus. For a while, it cost Triponey her peace of mind and her good name. It almost ended her 30-year academic career.

Another person might have felt vindicated, smug or self-righteous when former FBI Director Louis Freeh delivered the scathing report on his eight-month investigation of the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scandal. But Triponey sensed only a deep sadness.

Sources close to the Jerry Sandusky case say that three men have come forward and told police that they were abused in the 1970s or 1980s by the convicted pedophile.

They are the first men to allege abuse before the 1990s, and if found to be credible, would directly attack the 68-year-old's defense argument that a person doesn't become pedophile in his or her 50s.

In the early 1970s, when one of the men says he was abused, Jerry Sandusky would have been in his late 20s.
