Josh Powell back in Utah but for how long?

.... One neighbor particularly wanted to talk to Josh and take back the swing set he made for Susan and the boys. He was greeted by Josh's brother Micheal who instead of helping him get the play set called 911 to report Tim Petersen for trespassing.

Petersen told Micheal, "This whole thing was for Susan and the kid's enjoyment. Now Susan's gone. Did you happen to notice that Susan's gone? Because I don't see you guys doing anything about it. Susan's gone. And he just gave me a blank look like Josh has done."

Petersen says he's frustrated that Josh is going to live with his father to "hide" in a gated community in Washington.

Petersen tells ABC 4 he's tried to be supportive of Josh but his story of taking his two young boys camping in the middle of the night and the fact that he's not helping or cooperating with police just isn't adding up. Petersen also said that a day or two after Susan disappeared his wife asked Josh about his whereabouts and he said, "Well, it's not like I stabbed her." Petersen said he couldn't believe he would make a comment like that.

Josh Powell moving to Washington (update)

1:46 p.m. EST – Josh Powell, person of interest in the disapperace of his wife Susan Powell is reportedly packing up and moving his family to Washington state. Josh has been staying in Puyallup, Washington with his family over the holidays, and has apparently made the decision to be with his family. I can confirm at this hour, Josh is in Utah, and his children are with his family back in Washington. The family mini-van is inside the Powell family garage at this time, and I can tell you that Josh has reached out to friends, neighbors and church friends to help him move this weekend.

....

Friends of Susan told me that she loved to do acts of kindness to help others. Susan worked 4 – 10 hour days and had off Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s to spend with her children. On those days, she would often visit a close friend in a wheelchair, and give her a pedicure, she would bake bread for others, or pick a pumpkin from her garden and make someone a pie. She was always giving and doing for those around her. Over the Christmas holiday, Susan’s friends asked the public to do acts of kindness for others, and many responded with the things they were inspired to do. Some gave families a Christmas, other volunteered at homeless shelters, and in many cases there were multiple days of kindness, not just one.

Friends turn out to help Joshua Powell move from Utah

West Valley City » He's selling the home he shared with his missing wife and is moving to his native Washington.

West Valley City » Friends, family members, and neighbors helped Joshua Powell move his family's belongings out of their West Valley City home Saturday and into a moving truck headed for Washington.

Between 10 and 15 people arrived to help with the move, and began putting boxes into the truck shortly after 9 a.m.

Several said they wanted to help Joshua Powell despite questions surrounding the disappearance of his wife, Susan, just over one month ago. Joshua Powell is the only person of interest investigators have identified in his wife's case so far, and police have criticized him for not being more cooperative with their investigation. He has not been named as a suspect.

Ron Stagg, who lives a few houses from the Powells, said he came Saturday because Joshua Powell needed help. "Regardless of who is responsible for Susan's disappearance, Josh is really hurting," Stagg said. "I don't know if it was him or someone else [who was involved in Susan Powell's disappearance], but he still needs help."

$10K Reward In Utah Woman's Disappearance; Husband In Puyallup

Her husband, who is considered a person of interest in her disappearance, was among more than 60 people who attended a vigil for her Sunday night in her parents' hometown in Puyallup.

Josh Powell's attorney, Scott Williams, said earlier in the day that Powell had left Utah with the couple's two young sons. Williams told The Associated Press in a text message that his client went to his father's house in Washington state for the holidays with his sons.

Powell is expected to stay in the state with his family through Christmas.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Gary Horcher said Powell came toward the end of the vigil, kept his distance from Susan's family and refused to speak to reporters.

Horcher said Powell's presence at the vigil confused Susan's family, who said they hadn't heard from Powell since he hired an attorney.

"We have had no contact with him. We don't know his plans. I didn't know he was coming," said Susan's father, Chuck Cox.

Husband of missing West Valley woman has left Utah

Friend and fellow member of the Powells' LDS ward, John Hellewell, said he talked to Josh Powell about 30 minutes before a pair of candlelight vigils held by friends and family members in Washington and Utah to pray for the safe return of their "beloved Susan" began Sunday night.

"He was wanting details about the vigil in Washington — when and where it was," said Hellewell, 32, who was a home teacher with Josh Powell before Powell stopped attending church two years ago.

But many questioned why Josh Powell would leave for Washington during the height of the police investigation.

"One of the biggest problems Susan had was that (Josh) talked to his dad for hours, more than he talked to her," said Tim Peterson, a friend and member of the Powells' ward who has been vocal in the past about Josh Powell and once called police on him. "And now guess where he's at. He hasn't been formally charged, but he's not that far from the border to Canada now."

Hellewell said he knew Josh struggled with pressure from his family, especially his dad, Stephen Powell, about church.

"His dad is very against the church," Hellewell said. "His dad is always sending him anti-Mormon literature and I've heard stories from Josh and Susan that (Josh's) dad was always trying to break up their marriage."

An anonymous donor is offering a reward of $10,000 for original information that results in Susan Powell being found.

Josh Powell left Utah this weekend with his two young boys to spend the holidays in Washington. He attended the rainy vigil in Puyallup, as did Susan's grandparents, parents and siblings. Josh Powell did not speak to reporters gathered at the event.

He stood in a downpour surrounded by a tight group of supporters who shielded him from the media with umbrellas. His 4-year-old son, Charlie, accompanied him at the vigil and held a candle as many of Susan's friends and families stared at Josh in surprise, the Associated Press reported.

John Hellewell who is a neighbor of the Powell's found out about the trip Sunday when Josh called him. His first concern was to find someone to "pet sit" his birds. "He just called me and said, 'I'm here staying at my Dad's house.' He said he was trying to get away from all the media attention," Hellewell said. When asked if he thought it was strange for Powell to leave when the fate of his wife was still unknown, he said, "I don't understand a lot of the things he does. So, it's hard to know what his reasoning was."

West Valley Police say because Powell is not a suspect, he is free to come and go as he pleases. But, Captain Tom McLachlan said his leaving does not help them find his wife. He said, "Distance probably doesn't really matter that much right now. But his public appearance and actions don't put him in a good light."

"We’ve had no contact with Josh. We don’t know what his plans are," said Chuck Cox, Susan's father. "I didn’t know he was going to come up here.”

Powell and his son stood away from the main podium during the proceedings, and afterward remained silent for the most part, often surrounded by a wall of umbrellas erected by family friends.

Neither Cox nor Powell approached each other during the vigil, although two other relatives did talk to Josh in order to speak with the couple's son, family friends said.

Cox told KING-5 he would not attempt to speak with his son-in-law “unless he contacts me. I might call to ask if we can see the children or something. [But] there’s just too many things out there and … hopefully now that he’s back here around his parents, his dad, now that he has representation, maybe he’ll be comfortable enough that he’ll come forward with some verifiable story.”

Friends who held a vigil last night at an LDS Chapel say they are shocked that he would leave the state instead of staying here trying to help find his wife.

Joshua Powell stood with his son, 4-year-old Charlie, in a chilly downpour Sunday night with dozens of others at the candle-lit vigil and spoke briefly with Susan's sister Denise. Reports say she asked how he and the boys are doing and asked Josh if he would talk to her about the recent events. She says he agreed to talk to her later.

Susan's parents walked right past Josh and didn't bother to talk to him. Susans father says his story just isn't adding up.

Susan's husband Josh suddenly left Utah over the weekend. Although he's been called a person of interest by police, Josh Powell is legally free to leave the state.

He told friends he just wanted to get away from the media attention, but he missed an outpouring of support here for his missing wife.

Josh Powell evidently left Utah either Friday or Saturday and traveled to Washington to stay with his father. Friday and Sunday, a KSL news camera captured scenes of large items being removed from his home by friends or relatives.

"I don't know what his motives are. Maybe he just wanted to be with his family for a while but that was surprising to me," Kiirsi Hellewell said. "His story is already strange. It's already something that's hard to believe, so the whole circumstances around that are strange."

Police said his distance from Utah will make it more difficult to speak with him, but they do not have him under surveillance.

Josh told friends he couldn't handle all of the attention he's had since Susan's disappearance.

Neighbor John Hellewell said, "He just told me he needed to get away from all the press and publicity. He wants to keep his kids away from it."

The media attention followed Josh to Washington. Josh attended a vigil for Susan last night, but he refused to speak with reporters. Susan's parents told reporters they were surprised to see Josh there and believe he knows more about what happened to her than he has told police.

Over the weekend, our photographers captured friends or family members moving large items out of the Powell home in West Valley. Friends say Josh told them he lost his job as a computer programmer for a trucking and warehouse company, and is no longer going to be able to pay his house payment.

There's no word on when he will be coming back to Utah, but police say they would like to interview him again soon.

McLachlan said, "Our contact, as far as the police department goes, has been limited by his association with his retaining an attorney, so that slows things down. It delays things."

Joshua Powell's dad: Son is being 'vilified'
Missing woman » Police say husband went to Washington state.

"The whole thing has just turned into a vilification of Josh and it will turn into a vilification of me, my ex-wife and my other kids," said Steven Powell, who spoke to The Salt Lake Tribune briefly through the partially open front door of his home Sunday.

"I'm not making any statement because it doesn't matter how benign it is or how supportive it is. Somebody will twist it around."

On Friday, the Coxes told The Salt Lake Tribune that Steven Powell isn't actively helping in the search for their daughter. The Coxes said they've had "issues" with Steven Powell in the past and aren't comfortable being around him.

He told Tribune reporters to "please just go and please do not come back." Asked whether he wants a chance to speak on behalf of Joshua Powell and explain the reasons why he thinks his son has been unfairly vilified, Steven Powell said, "I don't need to explain anything. There is nothing to explain."

"I heard that Joshua (the husband) had arrived," he wrote on the social networking Web site Facebook. "I saw this [sic] brother doing an interview, I couldn't really understand why Josh was there."

Cox wrote that Joshua Powell also brought his 4-year-old son and that he felt it would have been inappropriate for him to barge in on the Powell family. Joshua Powell was under an umbrella in the rain surrounded by family members to keep the media away from him.

"I just hope being here [at the vigil] will encourage Josh to help with the search," Cox said on Facebook.

Joshua Powell isn't the only Utah husband who won't help police solve a mystery.

In 1994, someone shot and killed Kimberly Evans at the mouth of Butterfield Canyon in Herriman. Her husband, Mark B. Evans, submitted to an interview with police shortly after the murder. Detectives grilled him hard. So hard he hasn't spoken to investigators since.

Medwed also said many defense attorneys will advise even innocent clients not to talk. Research has shown police, especially during high profile cases, develop what Medwed called "tunnel vision" where they latch onto once suspect and ignore evidence against others.

"I don't know what motivates people to not talk to police," Park said. "The obvious one is when they're guilty and trying to hide something."

Friends: Susan Powell was poised to leave husband
Disappearance » Police say they're doing DNA testing on evidence and still have leads in the case.

A year before she disappeared, Susan Powell told a wide circle of friends she was preparing for the worst if she sought a divorce: that her husband might try to kidnap their sons and break her financially.

She said she had set up a separate bank account, arranged a place to stay if she decided to leave, and had informally written a will, according to friends who requested anonymity because they are not authorized by police to speak about the investigation. And Susan Powell made sure many knew of her preparations.

Susan Powell ultimately decided to stay and work on the relationship after fasting and praying.

On Monday, there was no sign of an eminent break in what is still being called a missing persons case. Police said they were waiting for results from the state crime lab, which is testing DNA evidence taken from the couple's home five days ago.

"We're their top priority," said West Valley City Police Chief Thayle "Buzz" Nielsen.

McLachlan said he did not know of any financial motive, such as a life insurance policy, that could give anyone an incentive to harm her.

"We would still dearly love to have an interview with him and have an open request, invitation, whatever you want to call it...for him to do that," said McLachlan.

Police searched the area near Simpson Springs, where Josh said he took his two sons camping, but they found nothing.

Police also want to know more about a 24-hour period where Josh seemed to vanish. Two days after Susan disappeared and the day after police seized his van, FOX 13 has learned Josh rented a car and was not seen for a full day.

Father of Missing Utah Woman's Husband Defends Son
4:50 PM MST, December 21, 2009
<snipped>
"The whole thing has just turned into a vilification of Josh and it will turn into a vilification of me, my ex-wife and my other kids," Steven Powell said through the partially open front door of his home. "I'm not making any statement because it doesn't matter how benign it is or how supportive it is. Somebody will twist it around."

Susan Powell's father, Charles Cox, wrote on a Facebook page for friends and family that he didn't understand why Josh was at the vigil.

"I heard that Joshua (the husband) had arrived," he wrote in the posting. "I saw this (sic) brother doing an interview, I couldn't really understand why Josh was there."

Cox and Josh Powell have barely spoken since Susan Powell was reported missing, although Cox has defended Josh Powell as a good father.

A message left with Josh Powell's attorney, Scott Williams, was not immediately returned Monday.

Susan Powell told friends of fears, struggles before her disappearance
Disappearance » Police say they're doing DNA testing on evidence and still have leads in the case.

"We have an open, standing request, or if you want to call it an invitation, for him to come speak to us," said Capt. Tom McLachlan.

Yet McLachlan said the investigation is "far from a standstill. We have a lot of stuff we're looking at."

Friends said they told her the relationship wasn't healthy and confirm that they encouraged Susan Powell to leave her husband, whom they have described as controlling and emotionally abusive. A friend has said Susan Powell was at one point poised to return to Washington with the aid of her parents.

Joshua Powell, 33, was upset his wife was depositing money into an account he didn't have access to, said friends who added that they encouraged Susan to stand up to him. Family members have said the couple got marital counseling at Susan Powell's urging.

Police ask why Powell drove so far in rental car
Published: Monday, Dec. 21, 2009 9:03 p.m. MST

A car rented by Josh Powell two days after his wife was reported missing was returned just 24 hours later with a lot of miles on it, according to police.

"It looks like there were several hundred miles driven," West Valley Police Capt. Tom McLachlan told the Deseret News.

Investigators do not know where the car was taken or where Josh Powell was during that 24-hour period. There was no GPS data stored in that rental car, said McLachlan, who declined Monday to say from where the vehicle was rented.

Questioning family never easy, but necessary, say police in Susan Powell case
Searches often begin with difficult inquiries at home
Published: Monday, Dec. 21, 2009 9:04 p.m. MST
<snipped>
For nearly two weeks, West Valley police have said they would like more detailed answers from Josh Powell regarding questions they have about his missing wife, Susan Powell.

He has been interviewed three times and submitted to a DNA search warrant. But police say he is still uncooperative, even though Powell and his attorney, Scott Williams, say they are working with authorities.

Investigators would like more specific answers to questions such as exactly where Josh says he went camping with his two young sons the night Susan disappeared. They also have questions about a rental car that was returned 24 hours after Josh rented it, with hundreds of new miles on it.

Ed Smart (Elizabeth Smart's father) said he had dinner with Chuck Cox, Susan Powell's father, when he was in Utah last week, and has spoken to him again on other occasions. He said Cox mostly had questions such as "How do you get through this?" and "What's the most important thing to do?"

"I think he's done everything he can possibly do. It's incredibly painful to the family," Smart said. "They just want to find Susan."

FBI profiler says things just aren't adding up in Powell case
December 22nd, 2009 @ 5:30pm
<snipped>
On the Today Show Tuesday morning, former FBI profiler Clint Van Zandt said this case reminds him of two other missing women cases -- one of which is that of the wife of former police officer Drew Peterson.

Van Zandt said Josh's behavior is the opposite of what he would expect from a husband whose wife is missing, and the issue of the rental car also begs more questions.

"We know, of course, he's now the primary caretaker of two young children, but one would think most of his activities would be centered around the house or trying to help law enforcement," Van Zant said. "If that vehicle's been driven hundreds of miles, where might he have gone? And could that have anything to do with his wife's disappearance?"

Meanwhile, McLachlan says he is feeling heat from the community to make an arrest.

"The pressure is to conduct the investigation of this missing person in a legal fashion where we can get a resolution that will stand up in any court," he said.

McLachaln said investigators are awaiting results from the crime lab and say some tests take precise methods that can't be rushed.

Professor: Husband is innocent until proven guilty
December 23rd, 2009 @ 6:02pm
<snipped>
With each day that passes, the likelihood that Susan Powell will be found alive dwindles. With very few leads in the case, police, family, friends and the public are frustrated. But a criminal law professor warns Josh Powell is still innocent until proven guilty.

Police have stayed tight lipped about the case, and Josh Powell is not speaking out on the advice of his attorney. But University of Utah criminal law professor Daniel Medwed hopes the public will resist the tendency to jump to conclusions.

Her husband, Josh Powell, is the only person of interest, and now he has taken the couple's two children to Washington state indefinitely. Few details about the case have come from police, but Medwed believes it's a strategy.

He said, "It seems like the police department here is really being careful in terms of dotting its I's and crossing its T's to make sure that it actually has probable cause to make the arrest."

Medwed said police have not named Josh a suspect; when there is really no technical difference between a person of interest and a suspect.

But if they name him a "suspect," Medwed said it implied an arrest was coming soon, and police may be waiting for more direct evidence to link him to Susan's disappearance.

He said police could arrest Josh based on circumstantial evidence, some of which includes:>

•A wet spot found on the carpet with fans

•A rental car with hundreds of miles logged

•The couple's history of financial problems

•News of a pre-paid cell phone Josh purchased

•And his improbable alibi of a camping trip the night Susan disappeared.

"The behavior is odd -- whether she was abducted by somebody else or whether he played a role in her death -- taking your toddlers out in the middle of the night to go camping in December in Utah is aberrant behavior," Medwed said.

The sister of Josh Powell says he isn't saying much about his wife's disappearance, even to his family. Jennifer Graves appeared on NBC's "Today" show Thursday morning.

She said, "It makes me sad that he won't speak up more on behalf of his wife. We need to find her."

She said, "He hasn't really said a lot since she disappeared. Like I said, it's what he said, basically, to the police. He hasn't communicated really anything else to us."

Missing Utah mom's father says her kids doing well
December 26th, 2009 @ 5:42pm
<snipped>
The parents of a missing Utah woman spent an unhappy Christmas together with her two young children, the woman's father said Saturday.

Chuck Cox said he and his wife were with the boys, ages 4 and 2, for several hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Both boys were in good health and spirits, Cox said in a posting to a Facebook page dedicated to the disappearance of his daughter, Susan Powell.

"We went through the motions of Christmas, but it didn't fill the emptiness," he said.

Cox, of Puyallup, Wash., said the last few days have been very difficult. But his grandsons seem to be unaffected by their mother's disappearance and the national attention it has brought, he wrote.

"We have pictures of Susan and her family up, so I was a little concerned," Cox said. "But the boys just went on playing, so I feel they are doing well."

West Valley City police detectives said Sunday leads to her whereabouts were few. "The more time that passes, it may not be in her favor," said West Valley police Capt. Tom McLachlan during a press conference last week.

Another week has passed since that statement, but it hasn't stopped Kiirsi Hellewell from still trying to find Powell. She says Powell is her best friend.

"Christmas was very hard," says Hellewell at her West Valley home Sunday. "I've been trying to keep my hopes up every single day, but every morning when I wake up, it gets a lot harder to get that hope and keep that hope that she's still alive."

Warrants Sealed in Missing Utah Mom Case, Forensic Labs Examining Evidence
9:46 PM MST, December 29, 2009

Search warrants in the case of a 28-year-old Utah woman missing for three weeks have been sealed. West Valley City crime lab is processing forensic evidence and the state lab is also assisting in the case. They say results can take weeks. "The variety of bodily fluids that can take 30 days 45 days depending on the complexity," Laboratory Director, Jay Henry said,

The lab is in constant communication with detectives who are anxious for answers, but are patient. "If you rush through things too fast, there's a higher opportunity for mistakes to be made and we want no mistakes made," Capt. Tom McLachlan of West Valley Police Department said.

E-mails from Susan Powell told of marriage struggles
Friends of Susan Powell turn over correspondence from 2008 to W.V. police
Published: Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009 10:52 p.m. MST
<snipped>
E-mails sent last year by Susan Powell to friends told of marriage struggles between her and her husband to the point that she seemed to be in fear of him.

Several of her friends, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed to the Deseret News that they had turned over to police e-mails that she sent them in June and July of 2008, the point when all friends agreed the Powells' marriage was at its worst.

One friend confirmed that in one of the e-mails, Susan Powell said she was afraid Josh Powell might kidnap her two boys, divorce her or worse.

The friend said Susan Powell had talked to her one day about something she had written and left in her desk at work.

"She had mentioned about writing something so that no one would ever think she committed suicide. She said it would be so her boys would know that she would never kill herself, because she would never leave her boys alone," the friend said.

West Valley police on Tuesday declined to talk about any potential evidence in the case. Other friends had reported earlier that a notebook Susan Powell kept in her desk at work at Wells Fargo was among the items seized by police.

The notebook, according to one source, detailed threats allegedly made about a year ago against her.

Mystery haunts Susan Powell's friend
Published: Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009 10:21 p.m. MST
<snipped>
Two and a half weeks ago, on a cold but dry December Sunday, the 34-year-old mother of three walked home from church with her best friend, Susan Powell.

As Kiirsi turned toward her front door, Susan said "bye" and continued walking up the street and around the corner to her house.

She hasn't heard from Susan since.

Both the media and the police have sought out the Hellewells in an attempt to learn more about the Powells — Susan because she's missing and can't respond and Josh because he isn't missing but won't respond.

Equally frustrating is the enigma that is Josh Powell. In the days after Susan disappeared, right up until he took his two sons to Washington to elude the media and police and be with family over the holidays, Susan's husband took regular refuge in Kiirsi's front room, alternating between sobbing and setting up a Web site to help in the investigation.

He never finished either one.

"I just so wanted to ask him so many questions," says Kiirsi. "But I didn't know how."

Warrants traditionally become public record 20 days after they are executed. Prosecutors have the option of sealing the warrant, however, if they believe the information may compromise an ongoing investigation. Police and the Salt Lake District Attorney's Office typically seal search warrants in major cases.

On Monday, the day the warrants would have become available, the court clerk announced they were sealed.

Ribbon campaign planned for Susan Powell
Published: Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009 11:20 p.m. MST

Friends of Susan Powell hope to organize a ribbon campaign to go along with a social media blitz scheduled to begin Monday.

Starting Monday and running for 72 hours, Powell's loved ones will launch an intense campaign on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube in an effort to keep her face in the public eye.

Her best friend, Kiirsi Hellewell, hopes a ribbon campaign can be organized at the same time as a visual reminder for people in Utah, Washington and elsewhere that Powell is still missing and needs to be found.

Details of the ribbon campaign were still being worked out Tuesday. Hellewell wasn't sure what color ribbon would be used to symbolize the search for Powell but said Powell's favorite colors were lavender and sage green.

Searching for Susan Powell: Neighbor describes husband's odd behavior
Missing mom » Friend says man seemed indifferent to wife's disappearance.
Updated: 12/24/2009 09:08:38 AM MST
<snipped>
When Joshua Powell showed up at Tim Peterson's door with extremely wind-burned hands two days after his wife went missing, asking for a ride to the police station to get his van, he seemed "pretty unfazed."

"We kept asking about Susan, but all he could talk about was the new clothes and phone he had gotten at Walmart after the police took his stuff for evidence," Peterson said Wednesday about his neighbor.

Joshua Powell seemed to have that lax attitude from the beginning.

Neighbors called all day Dec. 7 after his wife was reported missing, and when they finally talked to Joshua Powell, it took him two hours to get home.

"He just said he was driving around West Valley City," Peterson said. "He wasn't in a big hurry to get home and find his wife. It's just a really crappy situation."

Two days later, when Joshua Powell dropped by the Peterson home, he had "the worst wind burn" Peterson had ever seen on the back of his hands and he kept applying lotion to them as they talked in Peterson's front room.

"I wanted to say 'Man, this just isn't adding up,' but I didn't, I was loving and supportive," Peterson said.

Powell wouldn't answer questions about his missing wife, only saying he didn't know where she was and that he wasn't actively looking for her because the police were handling that, Peterson said.

"This guy was absolutely a crackpot and there was just something wrong with this whole situation," Peterson said.

Timing is influencing Powell's attention online. There was no Facebook or Twitter during the Elizabeth Smart or Lori Hacking searches, and the Powell search has lasted longer than the one for Destiny.

And while social media hasn't yet led police to Powell, Talbot believes it is producing results. It has helped spread the word about Powell and been a resource from which people can download fliers to distribute, Talbot said. He believes social media also helped increase the turnout at vigils for Powell.

Plus, if police and the Destiny Search Project get clues of where in Utah to look for Powell, social media has helped organize volunteers, Talbot said.

"We already know we have a couple hundred people ready to go," Talbot said.

Disappearance » Chuck Cox says grandsons are 'doing well'
Updated: 12/26/2009 07:54:09 PM MST
<snipped>
For the parents of a missing West Valley City woman, the holiday was filled with heartbreak despite time spent with their grandsons.

Chuck and Judy Cox, the parents of Susan Powell, a missing West Valley City woman, spent time with their grandsons at Christmas, but did not see their son-in-law, Joshua Powell.

Shelby Gifford, a spokeswoman for the Coxes, said the Cox family arranged to have the boys brought to the Cox home through a friend the Coxes share with Joshua Powell, Gifford said.

She declined to say whether the boys have asked for their missing mother, in the interest of protecting the children's privacy. She said the boys enjoyed playing with their cousins over Christmas and had time to have fun.

Gifford said the Cox family doesn't know exactly how long Joshua Powell plans to stay in Washington with his boys. She said Chuck Cox plans to return to Salt Lake City next week and hopes to meet with investigators on Monday for the latest information on where the search for Susan Powell is next headed.

Warrants sealed in Susan Powell case, newspaper plans challenge
Court » The Tribune, in a motion it intends to file today, wants to have that information made public.
Updated: 12/29/2009 12:23:12 AM MST
<snipped>
Police and prosecutors don't want the public to know what they took from Susan Powell's house and husband.

State court clerks on Monday confirmed search warrants in the Powell case have been sealed. A lawyer for The Salt Lake Tribune said Monday the newspaper plans to file a motion today to have those warrants disclosed.

"Public access helps ensure accuracy, accountability and fairness in the court systems simply because it is a lot easier for abuses to occur in secret than in the light of day," Tribune attorney Michael O'Brien said Monday. "Access is especially important in prominent cases, such as the Powell case, because the public is paying more attention to how well the court and law enforcement systems work in such cases."

Brian Barnard, a Salt Lake City attorney who in 2004 sued the state court system over its handling of search warrants, said law enforcement can only seal a search warrant by showing a judge disclosure would harm an investigation. That might mean tipping off coconspirators or identifying a police informant, Barnard said.

But Barnard said it's rare for law enforcement to seek such seals because word of the search usually spreads.

"The proverbial cat is out of the bag to someone," Barnard said.

Tribune files motion to open Powell search warrants
Updated: 12/29/2009 03:31:50 PM MST
<snipped>
An attorney for The Salt Lake Tribune on Tuesday argued history and the law favor opening search warrants connected to the Susan Powell disappearance case to the public.

"Public access to warrant materials serves as a check on the judiciary because the public can ensure that judges are not merely serving as a rubber stamp for the police," attorney Michael O'Brien wrote in a motion filed in state court.

In the motion filed Tuesday, O'Brien said to seal court documents, a judge must find disclosure would create a "substantial probability" of harming a defendant's right to a fair trial or there is another compelling reason.

"The fact that this is a high-profile case does not change this analysis," O'Brien wrote. "If the law were otherwise, then no negative information about a criminal matter in any high-profile case would ever be released."

It was not immediately clear when a judge would review or rule on the motion. West Valley Police have referred comment on the search warrants to the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office. A spokesman for that office declined comment Tuesday.

Report: Missing Utah Mom Feared Husband
Paper Says Friends Gave Cops Susan Powell E-Mails Saying So; Police Want to Ask Him About Trip He Took After Susan Vanished
SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 23, 2009
<snipped>
Friends of a Utah mother missing more than two weeks have given police e-mails Powell sent them last year in which Powell discussed troubles in her marriage and in which she seemed to be expressing fear of Josh Powell, according to the Desert News, a Salt Lake City newspaper.

The report says one friend confirmed Powell was concerned Josh might kidnap the couples two young sons, divorce her -- "or worse."

It was rented in Joshua Powell's name, and there were several hundred miles put on it," West Valley City Police Capt. Tom McLachlan said. "The company that rents the car has said there is no stored GPS data that would indicate where it was taken."

McLachlan said Joshua Powell rented the car during the 24-hour period that his van was in police custody, about two days after his wife was reported missing.

McLachlan declined to say specifically how many miles were added to the rental car's odometer and acknowledged that while police know the car was rented by Powell, they can only speculate about whether he was the person who used it. He said he didn't know what type of car was rented and declined to name the rental company.

Friends and family of Susan Powell plan "social media blitz"

The facebook administrators along with the Cox family spokesperson are urging people to use any and all online avenues to spead the video: facebook, twitter, youtube, blogs, you name it. They're asking everybody to e-mail just 5 friends. Hellewell says she thinks the blitz is the most effective way to find susan. She says, "Since I don't have a clue, and I don't know where to look, that's why I'm pushing the online means every way possible."

Hellewell says she's hopeful if anything will bring Susan back, it's this. She says, "I know she's out there somewhere, and I still have hope that she's alive, and time is of the essence. I'm satisfied when she comes back, that's it."

The viral video is not on youtube just yet. It is still under construction and they're working to get it ready for monday. They say you can expect several pictures that you haven't seen yet. A "ribbon campaign" will also start on Monday. They are asking people to display purple ribbons as a reminder of the ongoing search for Susan

Warrants in case
Updated: 12/31/2009 09:59:16 AM MST
<snipped>
It's the second time this week a Utah court has confirmed the existence of search warrants sealed from public view. In the 3rd District Court in Salt Lake City, a judge has sealed at least three search warrants related to the disappearance of missing wife and mother Susan Powell, 28. The Salt Lake Tribune has filed a motion to disclose the search warrants in the Powell case.

It was not yet known on late Wednesday whether any similar challenge was planned in the Utah County case. Taylor said he would "have no problem" disclosing the search warrants after an arrest is made but he did not indicate when that might occur.

Search warrants in Utah are filed with a court and made public after 20 days, and typically include statements from police about why they have probable cause to search and a list of what they seized. All that material can be sealed with a judge's order.

Family plans online blitz for missing mom
Story Published: Jan 2, 2010 at 6:36 PM PST
Story Updated: Jan 2, 2010 at 7:00 PM PST
<snipped>
It's an experiment, and no one knows if it will work. People often find friends with Facebook - although this could be the first time the site has been used to find a missing person.

But Susan's desperate family is ready to try anything. On Saturday, one of her kids turned 3 years old. And her family says she wouldn't miss his birthday for the world unless she was in trouble.

KOMO News went looking for Joshua at his father's house, where he's visiting for the holidays. We were told through the door to go away, and Joshua would not answer questions.

Susan's supporters hope their online media blitz brings out the truth.

"We're hoping that somebody might remember something. They'll see this. They'll remember. Something will hit them that before they hadn't though about. Some bit of information will get passed on to the police," Gifford says.

Susan Powell friends to launch social media blitz
Published: Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010 10:21 p.m. MST
<snipped>
Utah has had several high-profile missing person cases over the past eight years, including Elizabeth Smart, Lori Hacking and Destiny Norton. But social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter either weren't around or were in their infancy at those times.

Ed Smart — father of Elizabeth Smart, who was kidnapped and held hostage for nine months before being found — says the use of such social media tools in missing person cases is still too new to know exactly what effect a media blitz will have. But he said anything that gets Susan Powell's picture out in the public is good.

"The number one thing in finding a person is getting her picture out there," he said. "It's a means of getting information out when a case has not gone national. It's a big plus."

In Susan Powell's case, her story has been featured on network newscasts and talk shows. But Smart said getting her picture out on the Web has the possibility of reaching an entirely different audience who might not watch TV.

The Salt Lake City Police Department has been one of the leaders among Utah law enforcement agencies in establishing its own Myspace, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter pages.

"A lot of people get news through the Internet instead of traditional media," said Sgt. Robin Snyder. "The younger generation is more likely to get information off the Internet than watch the news on TV or read the newspaper."

West Valley Police Assistant Chief Craig Black said the social media sites also have become an important tool for investigators working the Powell case.

"It's a vast amount of information," he said.

Families of the missing want solace
Disappearances » Utah's official database lists 56 persons, including Susan Powell.
Updated: 01/05/2010 09:54:52 AM MST
<snipped>
For 15 years, Stephanie Amandia Cook has marked her mother's disappearance by writing her a letter and sending it skyward with a bunch of balloons.

The letters detail Cook's life and things she wishes they could have shared together. This year Cook, who was 5 when her mother Bobbi Ann Campbell vanished on Dec. 27, 1994, wrote about her wedding.

"Every year that goes by is just another year that people put it behind them," said Cook, 20. "It is just harder to keep the hope."

And every time there is news that a mother is missing, the heartache intensifies. This time, it is Susan Powell's story that has riveted Cook. Powell, mother of sons ages 4 and 2, was reported missing from her West Valley City home on Dec. 7.

"I just hurt for those little kids," Cook said. "I pray that they don't have to grow up with no answers like I did."

That pain is shared by families throughout Utah who have had loved ones disappear with few clues to what happened to them or why. The Utah Missing Persons Clearinghouse, the state's official database, now features Powell in addition to 55 others.

Of those, 42 are adults ages 19 or older. A majority -- 26 -- of those adults are men. A number of cases on the list involve suspicious circumstances that suggest foul play. Names are added only with permission of family or law enforcement.

It's not a complete list, acknowledges Gina McNeil. Across Utah, missing persons reports pour in daily. In Salt Lake County, for instance, the sheriff's office had received 157 reports in 2009 as of Dec. 30 -- a count that doesn't include runaway children.

The one thing that doesn't change?

"There are families who would appreciate having some answers," he said.

There were definite signs of a struggle at Karren's home. Karren was considered a chain smoker, but left her cigarettes on the kitchen counter along with her purse, house and car keys. Friends of missing Utah mom launch Web media blitz
January 3rd, 2010 @ 9:30pm
<snipped>
The trail has been cold for a month, but Powell's supporters hope the power of "the new media" will produce some fresh leads.

James Hofheins volunteered to coordinate the social networking aspect of the search even though he didn't know Powell before she disappeared. "If my wife were missing," Hofheins says, "if it were my mom, my sister, my daughter, I would want people coming out of the woodwork to help."

Another hope is that the blitz will prompt a reluctant person to talk. "Somebody somewhere knows something," Hofheins says. "Wherever they are, I really hope that the social media blitz will help put a little pressure and maybe prick their conscience to come forward and speak up."

Friends cling to the hope Powell is still alive. If not, they hope the blitz will churn up information leading to her body. "There's always the value of bringing her home, of giving her family some measure of closure," Hofheins says. "It will be painful in either case, I believe."

Family, Friends Launch Online Campaign to Find Missing Utah Mom
Monday, January 04, 2010
<snipped>
Friends saturated social networking sites, like Facebook and Twitter, and organized a mass e-mail campaign to spread information about Powell through the Internet, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

Police have seized several items from the family's home but have not charged Joshua Powell in connection to the disappearance. Authorities are seeking cell phone records, though police have declined to say whose phone records are being examined, the Tribune reported.

Authorities are also trying to determine where her husband traveled in a rental car two days after his wife was reported missing. He reportedly logged hundreds of miles on the rental vehicle.

It's an experiment, and no one knows if it will work. People often find friends with Facebook – although this could be the first time the site has been used to find a missing person.

But Susan's desperate family is ready to try anything. On Saturday, one of her kids turned 3 years old. And her family says she wouldn't miss his birthday for the world unless she was in trouble.

Susan Powell disappeared from her Utah home nearly a month ago under suspicious circumstances.

Shelby Gifford is the family spokesperson. She says that by the time she is done, she hopes everyone in the world will know about the desperate search for Susan Powell.

Susan Powell Family Launches Social Media Blitz to Find Missing Utah Mom
Her Father Urges Husband Joshua Powell to Cooperate With Police
Jan. 4, 2010
<snipped>
Susan Powell's father, Chuck Cox, told "Good Morning America" today that his son-in law has said little in recent weeks as he brings the boys, ages 4 and 3, to visit.

"We've only had a few words each time as he's dropped the kids off or picked the kids up and he's had nothing to say at all about where Susan might be," Cox said. "He told me a couple weeks ago that he didn't know where she was and there's been no change."

Cox once defended Joshua Powell and said he didn't think he'd be capable of harming his daughter. Now he's hoping his son-in-law will start helping authorities find her.

"It's a difficult situation when we talk," Cox said. "And I try to encourage him to use his attorney and talk to the police."

Cox said that he's confident in the police investigation, but that he doesn't know whether investigators are close to an answer.

"I have no idea where the investigation stands really," he said.

Susan Powell Friends, Family Launch Effort to Keep Her in Public Eye; Husband Named Sole "Person of Interest"
NEW YORK, Jan. 4, 2010
<snipped>
Shelby Gifford, Susan's family spokesperson, told reporters, "The fact that Joshua has been named a person of interest in this case deeply saddens the family, but it is not a surprise given the events and his reactions to them."

Hellewell said she's spoken with Josh Powell several times since Susan vanished.

"His story is very, very strange," she said. "I think that everybody agrees that it's a very strange story, and nobody can understand it."

Josh Powell told the media early in the search, "She's somewhere." :furious:

On "The Early Show," Hellewell said police haven't told family and friends details of the investigation.

Search for missing Utah mom going viral
72-hour social networking blitz to find Susan Powell
updated 10:18 a.m. ET, Mon., Jan. 4, 2010
<snipped>
As part of the blitz, Hellewell is asking people to view an 85-second YouTube slideshow made up of images of Susan Powell. The pictures show an attractive and apparently happy young woman with hair ranging from brunet to light blond.

Although police in the Salt Lake City suburb of West Valley City have named Susan’s husband, Josh Powell, as a person of interest in the disappearance, there has been little for investigators to go on. The couple had been having marital problems, according to Susan’s friends, and she had even considered leaving her husband, who has been described as becoming increasingly controlling.

But police say that Powell, who has moved in with his father in Washington state and plans to move his sons there permanently, has hired a prominent defense attorney and has declined to submit to questioning.

“I don’t think anybody can understand why a husband would act this way. It’s very confusing and it’s hard to know what to think,” Hellewell said.

Hellewell said people who use the micro-blogging site twitter.com are being asked to send a tweet about Powell. The goal would be to get enough people to twitter about Powell that it becomes a top-10 topic on that Web site, Hellewell said.

The social media blitz is scheduled to end 8 a.m Thursday. The ribbon campaign will run indefinitely, Hellewell said.

"We believe that by spreading the information as far as we can, we certainly increase our chances of hearing from someone who might remember something or might have seen something," family spokeswoman Shelby Gifford tells PEOPLE. "There's no way that I personally can hang a flyer in Australia right now, but using the electronic means that are available to us, we're able to reach all of those corners."

She adds, "The unexpected side effect for the family is we're able to get on the Facebook site 24 hours a day and be comforted and soothed by the words of support. We appreciate them all and we read them all."

Family hopes online blitz will bring new leads in Powell case
January 4th, 2010 @ 1:10pm
<snipped>
Investigators say they've received e-mail from as far away as Bavaria. Some of the leads apparently are not credible, but some may be. Police say none of the tips Monday involves a sighting of the missing woman.

Susan's father, Charles Cox, said, "The more people that know about this, the more likely we're going to have somebody who has seen something or knows something come forward with a tip that's going to find her."

As her father, I have no choice," he said. "I must maintain the hope that she's alive and the belief that she's alive until I hear differently. That's what I'm going to hang on to."

West Valley City police say they have had no further conversation with Susan's husband, Josh Powell, over the holidays.

Joshua Powell remains in Washington as social media campaign focuses on his wife
Search » Internet blitz used to help find Susan Powell has drawn a dozen tips.
Updated: 01/05/2010 01:49:12 PM MST
<snipped>
An online social media campaign being waged by friends and family of Susan Powell produced tips for police Monday, but there were no indications the missing woman's husband was taking part or planned to return to their Utah home.

Susan Powell's parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, saw their son-in-law in Puyallup, Wash. on Sunday afternoon. Josh Powell, who has been staying with his father in Puyallup, brought his 2- and 4-year-old sons to the Cox home for a visit.

Chuck Cox said Monday he spoke only briefly with Josh Powell when he dropped off the boys.

"I said, 'If you know anything, please contact the police,' " said Chuck Cox, who had requested to see his grandchildren.

Gifford said she and Powell's father, Chuck Cox, have been monitoring the Facebook activity from Powell's hometown of Puyallup, Wash.

"We're getting about 500 (new Facebook friends) an hour," she said.

"The more people that know about this, the more likely we're going to have somebody who has seen something or knows something come forward with a tip that's going to find her," Cox told KSL-TV.

Cox said Monday that he had been able to see his grandchildren again since Christmas.

West Valley police Monday had no new information to release regarding the case. Capt. Tom McLachlan noted that the social-media blitz, however, had generated several new tips and potential leads. He said a detective had been assigned to monitor all Web traffic generated by the social-media blitz, evaluate the tips that came in and prioritize them.

Cox and Gifford said Monday that they remained optimistic Susan Powell will return safely.

"We believe as a family, fear and faith can't occupy the same space," Gifford said. "We choose faith. We will remain hopeful and work for her return."

30 year old cold case
Last Update: 1/06 9:12 am
<snipped>
Kelly Miller last saw her mother Mary Katherine Miller 30 years ago. On June 20, 1979 they had dinner together a Price's Ice Cream Shop in Provo.

They'd recently learned that Kelly's father -- Mary Katherine's ex-husband -- had died the previous year. Kelly said he mother was upset that no one had bothered to notify them and that she wanted to go find the grave in the American Fork City Cemetery.

When her mother left that evening, Kelly believes she first went to the cemetery and then headed up American Fork Canyon for a drive along the Alpine Loop.

Nearly three weeks later, authorities found her car -- a 1978 brown Honda Civic -- beyond the Timpooneke campground on the back side of Mount Timpanogos. It was actually hidden near a sheep herder's camp. One of the men in that camp is now considered a "person of interest."

Lt. Harris believes Mary Katherine Miller met with foul play. Not only did a two day search by the Sheriff's Jeep Patrol fail to turn up any trace, but 30 years of hunters, campers and hikers in the popular recreation area failed to turn up anything. "In my heart I hope we will be able to find something," he said.

He will not be alone. Since the Sheriff reopened the cold case in 2003, the Attorney General's office has also agreed to help.

The stories about Susan Powell, a missing mother from West Valley, have stirred up emotions in Kelly Miller. She said, "I am praying for the people who are waiting to find her because I know sometimes it can be a lifetime."

Susan Powell friends warning about scam; Media blitz final day
Last Update: 1/06 7:52 am
<snipped>
Here's the facebook post.
Kiirsi Branham Hellewell ATTENTION ALL:
It has come to our attention that some people are trying to "make money off of" Susan's name and story. PLEASE do not fall for this scam...any Cafe Press t-shirts or any other place selling things about Susan is NOT endorsed by Susan's family. If they ever decide to sell something for a fundraising pur...pose, we will tell you directly and make it a Discussion topic. Thank you for your vigilance in watching out for these things!

Additionally ABC 4 is hearing from JoVanna Owing the last person besides Josh Powell to see Susan alive, that Josh is planning on coming back to Utah, packing up and moving to Washington for good. That's a move that Susan's friends and family aren't happy about.

Owing says, "I would really like him to sit down and fully cooperate with the authorities and answer questions completely and it's sad he hasn't done that."

West Valley Police say that the media blitz is generating some leads and they are following up on them. However, Josh Powell continues to be the only "person of interest" in the disappearance.

Husband of Missing Utah Woman Moving, Selling Home
5:15 PM MST, January 8, 2010
<snipped>
The husband of a missing Utah mom, Susan Powell, is reportedly planning to sell the family home and relocate his family to Washington State. Neighbors of Susan said her husband, Josh, who is now considered a person of interest by police, returned from Washington State on Wednesday after spending the holidays with family. The family of Susan Powell said Josh now plans to sell the family home and move to his home state of Washington.

A neighbor of the Powells said Josh was seen pulling into the driveway at about 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

West Valley City Police made an appearance at the Powell household Wednesday. Susan Powell's friend, Tim Peterson, went to the Powell home knocking on the front door hollering Josh's name. Peterson was trying to retrieve a playground set he gave the Powells. Josh's brother answered the door and opened the back fence gate, but when Peterson's truck got stuck in the driveway, Josh's brother called police.

Police spoke with Powell's brother briefly, but there was no sign of Josh.

"He doesn't want to talk about his wife, and you know, the whole world wants to know where his wife is," Peterson said. "In my opinion, only he and God knows."

West Valley City Police said Josh moving out of state would not hinder their investigation because he has been uncooperative in communicating with authorities and unwilling to talk to about the details concerning the time he spent with Susan a month ago when she went missing.

Neighbor to Joshua Powell: 'I want my swing set back'
Crime » Neighbor storms to West Valley City home upon hearing of impending move

<snipped>
He arrived at the house around 4 p.m., parking his truck at the end of the driveway before pounding on the door to search for Joshua Powell.

Instead, Joshua's brother, Michael Powell, answered the door. Peterson told Michael Powell he wanted to load up the playground set in his truck before Joshua Powell split town.

Michael Powell told Peterson to call Joshua Powell - who is in Utah but apparently wasn't home at the time of Peterson's visit - to get permission to remove the playground set. Peterson told Michael Powell that his brother won't take his phone calls.

"I said, this playground was for Susan and the kids and for their enjoyment. I said, she's not here anymore and you guys don't appear to be looking for her. So just in case you haven't noticed, Susan's gone," Peterson said of his conversation with Michael Powell.

"He just sat there and stared at me. He's acting just as quiet as his brother."

Michael Powell, who is visiting from Puyallup, declined to comment about the incident, but came out to tell a throng of reporters gathered at the scene that he intended for Peterson to be arrested for trespassing.

Peterson said he's frustrated that Joshua Powell is going to live with his father to "hide" in a gated community in South Hill, an area near Puyallup.

He said he tried to be supportive of Joshua Powell initially, but thought the man's story of taking his children camping in winter weather at midnight the night Susan Powell disappeared didn't add up.

Peterson said his wife asked Joshua Powell about Susan's whereabouts and Powell replied "Well, it's not like I stabbed her."

"I couldn't believe he would make a comment like that," Peterson said.

Neighbor tries to retrieve playground he made for Powells
January 6th, 2010 @ 11:24pm
<snipped>
Thursday marks one month since Susan Powell disappeared from her West Valley City home. Her husband, Josh Powell, has returned from Washington and plans to move the contents of the West Valley home and return to Washington permanently.

Neighbor Tim Peterson built a playground for the Powell family just a few days before Susan disappeared. With Josh moving, Peterson wants his playground back.

"He's not looking for his wife, that much I know," Peterson told reporters Wednesday. "I just want to make sure I get my playground, OK? So I can give it to someone else in the ward."

One of Josh Powell's brothers was at the home, but told Peterson he'd have to ask Josh about taking the playground. The brother then called police, saying Peterson was trespassing. Peterson left empty-handed.

Exclusive: ABC 4 talks to parents of missing Utah man
Last Update: 1/07 10:45 am
<snipped>
Susan Powell is not the only missing Utahn. 30-year-old Steven Koecher has been missing about as long as Susan under circumstances that detectives are saying "just don't line up." ABC 4 spoke exclusively with Koecher's parents at their home in Bountiful.

Steven was last seen in the town of Henderson, just outside Las Vegas. What's troubling, his parents say, is there are no indicators that say he would've just abandoned those close to him. After almost a month of tracing dead-ends, his parents are beginning to fear he might have disappeared without a trace.

Koecher’s mom, DeAnne, says, “When we have something that we're working toward we have a little bit of hope, but the nights are very, very long.” His Dad, Rolf, adds, “When they're no longer kids, you don't worry so much, when they grow up, you know...I guess you always have to worry.” In fact, worry is all they've done since Steven, a St. George resident, first disappeared on December 13th.

His white 2003 Chevy Cavalier had been sitting in the cul de sac of a upscale Hendersen, Nevada retirement community for four days. A nearby resident who is a retired US Marshal, has a video surveillance system he keeps running at his home. The video shows Steven walking away from his car the morning he disappeared. His mom says, “He looks very purposeful, doesn't look disoriented, looks like he has a reason to be there.”

The Las Vegas, Henderson and Saint George police agencies are all working the case. Just last week, police searched with helicopter, ATVs, even door to door canvassing. Much like Susan Powell, the search for Steven Koecher has also gone viral. His family has started the “Help find Steven Koecher” facebook page.

Josh Powell back in Utah but for how long?
Last Update: 1/07 11:53 am
<snipped>
Josh has been staying in Washington with his dad in a gated community. He says he left Utah to get away from the media attention surrounding the disappearance of his wife Susan Powell.

Friends, family and neighbors have been upset by Josh's bizarre behavior and lack of cooperation with police. Now that he's back in town, packing up and heading back to Washington some neighbors want answers.

West Valley Police are also hoping to get an interview with Josh while he is in town. But so far, Josh has tried to avoid everyone including investigators.

Josh Powell prepares to leave Utah for good

West Valley City police say Powell has the right to move out of the state because he is not a suspect in his wife's disappearance.

"Legally he has that freedom of movement," said Capt. Tom McLachlan with the West Valley City Police Department.

Police say the move doesn't really affect their investigation because he's been uncooperative the whole time.

"Whether he's up there and not talking to us, or down here not talking to us, it really doesn't make that much difference," McLachlan says.

It's been exactly one month since the disappearance of 28-year-old Susan Powell, and police say they still have yet to formally talk to the one person who saw her last.

"We would love to talk to Joshua, and we would love to verify what he has initially told us, but he has removed himself from our ability to do that," says McLachlan.

MYSTERY: Husband, sons of missing Utah woman plan permanent move; police say he’s uncooperative

Joshua Powell, the husband of Susan Powell, returned to Utah from Puyallup to retrieve his belongings, say friends and a spokeswoman for Susan Powell’s parents. He and the couple’s two young sons, Charlie, 4, and Braden, 2, had been staying with Joshua Powell’s father in Puyallup since Christmas.

Friends of the Powells have said Joshua Powell was fired from his job as a computer programmer for a trucking and warehousing company and now plans to sell the family’s home.

Police in West Valley City, Utah, still are awaiting state crime lab reports on the DNA tests and fiber evidence taken from the Powell home.

“We are not at a standstill by any means,” police Capt. Tom McLachlan said, noting the DNA results generally take four to eight weeks to process. “At this point, with the information we’ve got and the resources we’ve got, we’re feeling the situation will be resolved.”

Last month, police took fingerprint evidence off the front door of the Powell home and collected several items, including a bedspread and a carpet cleaner, according to neighbors.

Josh Powell keeping a low profile, moving to Washington
Published: Friday, Jan. 8, 2010 12:32 a.m. MST

Kiirsi Hellewell, a close friend of Susan's, said Josh has asked members of his LDS ward to help him move on Saturday. Hellewell said before Susan disappeared, Josh had started attending their ward again and has reportedly been attending church in Washington.

Also Thursday, some neighbors were still talking about a dispute over a swing set in the Powell's backyard that ended with police being called to the Powell house Wednesday afternoon.

But after a pickup truck was backed up to the Powell's yard Wednesday and became stuck in the snow, a dispute over ownership of the playground equipment started between the neighbor and Michael Powell, Josh's brother who drove to Utah with him from Washington to help him move. McLachlan said Michael Powell reportedly changed his mind and thought moving the swing set would become too much of a problem.

Although he wouldn't classify it as an argument, McLachlan said Michael Powell "was nervous about all the media" sitting out front watching, and he called police.

An officer arrived to keep the peace but did not arrest anyone. Because of the dispute over who owned the property, the group was ordered to keep the play equipment where it was, McLachlan said.

Josh Powell was not seen by the responding officer, he said. McLachlan said because he is not a suspect, Powell is free to leave the state whenever he wants.

Susan Powell's Husband Prepares to Leave State Amid Search for Missing Wife
Friends, Family Incredulous That Joshua Powell Is Moving One Month After Disappearance
Jan. 8, 2010
<snipped>
Powell's family told "Good Morning America" that he has packed up the house he shared with his wife and two young sons and, they believe, will soon put it up for sale.

"We'd like to see him here helping out with Susan's search," Joshua Powell's brother-in-law, Kirk Graves, said. "But he's not."

Powell hired noted Salt Lake City criminal defense attorney Scott Williams as attention turned on him.

Williams told ABC News that Powell was not going to comment and would rather keep the focus on the search for his wife.

Neighbor Peterson said, "I sure hope they find enough incriminating evidence against him that they can throw him in jail. In my opinion, Josh is the only one who knows where she's at. You know, Josh and God. That's, that's it."

Susan Powell's father, Chuck Cox, told "Good Morning America" Monday that his son-in law has said little in recent weeks as he brings the boys, ages 4 and 3, to visit.

"We've only had a few words each time as he's dropped the kids off or picked the kids up and he's had nothing to say at all about where Susan might be," Cox said. "He told me a couple weeks ago that he didn't know where she was and there's been no change."

"It's a difficult situation when we talk," Cox said. "And I try to encourage him to use his attorney and talk to the police."

Cox said that he's confident in the police investigation, but that he doesn't know whether investigators are close to an answer.

"I have no idea where the investigation stands, really," he said.

Josh Powell's sister says she is not surprised he is moving back to their home state of Washington, but she is disappointed.

Kirk and Jennifer Graves say they've been over at Josh's for the last two nights to help him pack up. They say as of late they have a strained relationship with josh and they don't support his move. Jennifer says, “We'd like him to step up a little bit more, and he's not, so it leaves us carrying the weight.” The Graves say they don't understand why Josh feels he must bare the burden alone. Kirk says, “Family is always family, and it never stops being family, but that doesn't mean you don't wish family would do things differently some time.”

They say they believe Josh's silence is actually hurting the investigation. Kirk says, “I think josh has done a lot to make himself look bad. I think that the media has correctly portrayed what he's been doing. Josh's sister says she doesn't understand why Josh shies away from the media. She says, “Staying away from the media, I think, has been a bad thing...he shouldn't have done that.”

The Graves say they've spent the last couple nights with Josh and they've noticed atypical behavior. Kirk says, “He's not really normal Josh right now, take that as you will.”

Neighbors to Help Josh Powell Pack Up and Leave Utah

The move has left many confused, him moving while in the midst of a large-scale organized search. Many friends want Josh to stay.

"Josh is a person who is hurting just as much as we are, and our hearts go out to him too," says neighbor, Jovanna Owings, who is the last to see Susan Powell with Josh and their two boys. :shakehead: "I would like Susan to come home to her family here."

Josh Powell's Attorney released a statement to the Associated Press Friday saying his client was leaving Utah, moving to Washington, because the Salt Lake area was not providing the financial and social support he needs. :furious:

West Valley City Police said Josh moving out of state would not hinder their investigation because he has been uncooperative in communicating with authorities and unwilling to talk to about the details concerning the time he spent with Susan a month ago when she went missing.

Volunteers and family members met at 10 on Saturday morning to help Josh move back to his home state. Josh has asked his ward, the Hunter 36th Ward in West Valley, for their help in moving him out of his home.

Some of Josh's family members have expressed concern over the relocation; Josh's sister, Jennifer Graves, says "We're disappointed that he's moving. We don't want him to. We think he would be better off staying here and participating in the search."

Josh Powell packs up West Valley City home
Some in his family question move with wife still missing

A quiet, somber-looking Josh Powell spent Saturday, accompanied by as many as 20 volunteers, filling a U-Haul truck and trailer with the contents of his home.

Some say he's moving on. Others say he can't afford to stay. But whatever the reason, there were plenty of people still willing to help.

Though many volunteers seemed to believe that Powell had to move due to his current economic situation, his brother-in-law Kirk Graves said as far as he knows, they're up to date on their house payments. And there are a good number of people willing to help and provide a place for him to stay in Utah.

"We would much rather him be here for a couple of reasons," Graves told the Deseret News. "Here, he might be a help with the investigation, and we would love to still see the kids. But we don't have any say in that and he's going to do what he's going to do."

Unless Powell is asked to return by his attorney or police, he has no plans to return to Utah, Graves said.

"I'd say he's moving on," Graves said. "There's a lot of stress in his life. He's quieter than normal and isn't talking as much as he normally does."

Powell largely ignored the media Saturday, doing little more than shaking his head no to numerous inquiries as to whether he'd like to make a statement or answer questions.

Neighbor and family friend Kiirsi Hellewell said she and her husband helped Josh Powell pack up boxes Friday night, including Susan Powell's belongings.

"I can't even tell you how hard it was," she said. "As I packed every item of her clothing, I could picture her wearing it."

"He can't afford the house, and he's got to get the stuff out before the bank gets to it," John Hellewell said. Neighbors said Josh Powell told them he'd like to finish the basement before renting or selling the house.

''We cannot and are not limiting his ability to move freely,'' police Capt. Tom McLachlan told The Associated Press on Saturday.

''He has not been cooperating with us very much up to this point,'' McLachlan said. He said they're watching the move, ''and we're interested in it, but we can't prevent it.''

McLachlan declined to comment on whether his department has been in contact with Washington state authorities.

Asked by reporters if he wanted to say anything before he briefly left his home around noon Saturday, Josh Powell replied ''no.'' Powell has not said specifically where he is moving. His father and Susan Powell's parents live in Puyallup, a city south of Seattle where the couple met.

Powell's sister, Jennifer Graves, told KUTV on Friday that she was disappointed about her brother's decision to move.

''We are supposed to be focused on trying to find Susan and I think his place is here with us in Salt Lake, looking for Susan,'' she said.

Friends turn out to help Joshua Powell move from Utah
West Valley City » He's selling the home he shared with his missing wife and is moving to his native Washington.

Friends, family members, and neighbors helped Joshua Powell move his family's belongings out of their West Valley City home Saturday and into a moving truck headed for Washington.

John Hellewell, whose wife, Kiirsi, is Susan Powell's best friend in Utah, said Joshua Powell hasn't shared with friends what his specific plans are once he returns to Washington.

Thursday marked one month since Susan Powell was reported missing. Police have said they are still awaiting state crime lab reports on DNA tests and fiber evidence taken from the Powell home. Last month, police took fingerprint evidence off the front door of the home and collected several items, including a bedspread and a carpet cleaner, according to neighbors.

Investigators have confirmed they found a large wet spot in the home with fans aimed at it to dry on the day Susan Powell was reported missing. Police have said they subpoenaed the couple's phone records, but have declined to say whether they have reviewed a journal that sources told The Salt Lake Tribune Susan Powell wrote at her workplace.

John Hellewell said he understands why Joshua Powell wants to leave the home.

"I think it would be hard to stay in a house with all the memories, whether he did it [was involved with Susan Powell's disappearance] or not," Hellewell said.

The 33-year-old started packing his West Valley City home shortly after noon with the help of about four friends and neighbors. They loaded boxes, bags, and wood from the garage to a moving van and attached trailer, continuing a job that started Saturday morning.

Powell declined to speak with the a Tribune reporter when approached. Powell plans to move to his hometown of Puyallup, Washington, friends say. The Powell's sons, ages 2 and 4, are already there. The move comes after he was fired from his job as a computer programmer for a trucking and warehousing company, friends have said.

The home of Susan Powell, the Utah mother of two who has been missing since Dec. 7, has been emptied out as her husband Josh and their two sons are moving to Washington state. Friends and family helped pack a U-Haul truck for the Powell family, and the truck left their West Valley City neighborhood at about 10:00 a.m. Monday. Josh's brother, Michael, was seen driving the Powell family's minivan away from the home. Neither of the Powell brothers would speak to FOX 13 News. Betty Trujillo, a former neighbor of the Powell family, said she finds it difficult to understand why Josh is moving.

"I'm, like everybody else, think[ing] that he probably should've stayed and waited to see what happens," Trujillo told FOX 13 News.

Susan Powell's father asks for people's prayers

The father of Susan Powell, a missing West Valley City woman, told followers of a Facebook page that police recently have received results on some forensic evidence in the case.

Chuck Cox posted on the Friends and Family of Susan Powell Facebook page that some, but not all, forensic evidence is in, but added that police won't comment on any specifics as "it could impact the ongoing investigation."

On the Facebook page, Cox wrote that although the missing 28-year-old woman's husband, Josh Powell, has moved to Washington with his two young sons, the West Valley City Police Department is still hard at work.

"If anything, it provides more determination and more law enforcement officers, because we have law enforcement in Washington State also," Cox wrote.

However, there's "still no cooperation or help from Josh [Powell]" he wrote.

Cox asked people to continue to pray for his daughter.

Susan's friend and Cox family spokeswoman Shelby Gifford said West Valley police have been providing Cox with regular updates.

"The investigation is complex. We're happy they report back to us and are making progress. We're confident they're dotting all the i's and crossing the t's," she said.

As for Cox's comment regarding the forensic test results, Gifford said it was only meant to be an update that the case was moving along.

"There's a whole series of tests to be run. There are a lot of components to it," she said. "It isn't a specific item."

Gifford said Cox had not seen Josh since the last week of December and also had not seen his grandsons, Josh and Susan's two boys, ages 2 and 4.

Gifford said the family was planning on a new campaign this week to keep Susan's face and story alive in the public eye.

The father of missing Utah mother, Susan Powell, says police have recently received results of some forensic evidence in the case. In a Facebook page posting, Chuck Cox wrote that police wouldn't share any specifics because of the ongoing investigation.

West Valley City police declined to comment but the Cox family spokesperson, Shelby Griffard commented that the family is confident Susan is still alive and the West Valley Police Deparment is doing everything they can to find her. Griffard also tells FOX 13 the family have not seen their grandchildren since Josh returned to Seattle after moving out of the Powell's Salt Lake City Home.

Josh still remains the only person of interest and police have not named a suspect in the case.

A perpetrator-friendly mentality

Joshua Powell, the husband of interest in the disappearance of wife Susan in West Valley, got emotional and physical support from some of his neighbors in moving from Utah back to Washington state last weekend.

He is moving back without his wife. What do his former classmates, friends and relatives say to him when he moves back to his home state minus a package he brought to Utah from Washington state? Do you think Mr. Powell's friends and relatives who attended his wedding would reverberate words in their etched memory where both partners agreed to be loyal to each other and always be concerned for the other's personal safety and welfare?

What can we collectively do to think of ways our legislators could help law enforcement officials to do their job, in my opinion, more properly when a spouse goes missing?

In 2002, Michael Blagg hit the airwaves crying crocodile tears that his wife and daughter went missing as well. Later in that year Scott Peterson cried and lied to us that Laci was last seen walking the dog. Drew Peterson, an ex-cop from Decatur, Ill., declared that his wife Staci ran away with another man.

Although Abby Blagg's body was never found, she was never heard from again. Like Abby, Staci was yet to resurface after three years. Laci Peterson's body washed ashore with a dead fetus also being discovered within a day or two of each other.

One thing we do know, you can turn a "truth" into a "lie" but one can never turn a "lie" into a truth.

In other words, those husbands lied to us on national television about the whereabouts of their wives. The truth told a different story from what their original accounts stated.

The West Valley Police Department is doing all it can in the case of Susan Powell. The Constitution limits them on what they can do. All persons are innocent until proven guilty according to the Constitution.

Facebook deletes page discussing Susan Powell after complaints
Removed Thursday » Another media blitz to raise awareness may be forthcoming.

The social networking Web site notified the page's creator, Leslie Bleak, on Thursday the page was deleted, according to a posting on Bleak's personal Facebook page.

A Facebook spokeswoman on Monday said, due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, she was unable to investigate why the page was removed. Facebook's terms of use warns content can be removed if it violates copyrights, other laws or the "spirit" of its terms.

Bleak's page was titled "Susan Powell" and had about 6,000 members. Many of the postings on the page accused Powell's husband, Joshua Powell, of having a role in the disappearance or implored him to cooperate in the police investigation.

Bleak, who was unavailable for comment Monday, told The Salt Lake Tribune last month she started the page because she did not like the speech restrictions on a page started by Susan Powell's family. Bleak has said she received angry messages from people asking her to remove or edit her page.

Susan Powell's family established a Facebook page shortly after her disappearance titled "Friends and Family of Susan Powell." It had 42,790 members as of Monday afternoon. Its administrators have been vigilant in deleting posts speculating why the 28-year-old wife and mother went missing or who may have been involved in her disappearance.

Shelby Gifford, a friend and spokeswoman for Susan Powell's parents, said Monday the family did not complain to Facebook about Bleak's page.

Since Bleak's page was deleted, another page titled "susan powell part 2" has been created. It had 50 members as of Monday afternoon.
