Ground Search Suspended For Missing McCleary Girl
Search Intensifies Into Her Online History

Police are now checking entries in her MySpace page and doing a forensic analysis of her computer looking for new clues.

They found an entry from Lindsey a month ago saying, "I've been getting a lot of nightmares lately and I have this bad feeling that something bads gonna happen.”

“That's why we're having the computer looked at now forensically to see if there's any other information that may have been deleted or in some other file we didn't access," said Rick Scott of Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office.

The initial analysis shows no evidence Lindsey communicated with anyone online that may have been involved in her disappearance.

"This is a really rough day today. It's getting worse every day," said Lindsey’s mother, Melissa Baum.

Lindsey's mom now thinks it's likely she was taken by someone she knew because she would have fought a stranger.

"She would have clawed them. She would have screamed, somebody would have heard something," Melissa Baum said.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Today offroad motorcycles were added to the search efforts along with horse teams from Tristan County. Lindsey Baum`s mother came to the police station to talk with detectives. The little girl`s family remains convinced she`s been abducted.

GRACE: To Steven Friederich with the "Daily World," tracking dogs could not pick up her scent, and this is after a neighbor that knew her observed her about three blocks from her home?

STEVEN FRIEDERICH, REPORTER, THE DAILY WORLD, COVERING STORY (via phone): Yes, that`s about right. At this point the sheriff`s offices says that they`ve scaled down the number of people that are out there looking for her, and -- from about 45 actual search and rescue experts down to about 23.

McCleary Mystery Still Unsolved: Where Is Missing Ten Year Old?
Police say they'll continue interviewing witnesses and chasing down leads in the disappearance of ten-year-old Lindsey Baum, who vanished Friday night while walking home from a friend's house.
July 2, 2009
<snipped>
Detectives say they're now taking a closer look at her computer and how she may have used the Internet before she vanished.

Scott says even though a physical search has been called off in McCleary, an intense investigation will continue into the girl's disappearance.

"We're taking police officers and putting them on the street to follow up on the stack of tips we've received," said Scott.

Authorities expect Lindsey's father to arrive in town Thursday night or Friday. He's in the military service, stationed in Tennessee. Police hope he may be able to share new information with them to help them solve the disappearance.

We're looking at what's being said on the Internet. Looking at some of the communication that's being done in the community. The people that live here, the friends, the family, the neighbors, are the people that know this community better than you, than I, than any of the officers working it," said Scott. "So it's talking to them and hopefully prompting someone's memory and dragging out that seemingly meaningless piece of information that they have that's going to unravel this mystery."

MASON COUNTY SHERIFF ASSISTS IN SEARCH FOR MCCLEARY CHILD
07/03/2009
<snipped>
Mason County Sheriff's Deputies have been asked to assist in the investigation of the disappearance of 10-year-old Lindsey J. Baum of McCleary. Four detectives from the Sheriff's Office Special Operations Group are assisting the McCleary Police Department and Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office in following up on a large number tips coming in about the disappearance. Mason County Detectives have also assisted the investigation by verifying addresses and providing information to the investigation about registered sex offenders in west Mason County. Lindsey went missing last Friday, while walking home from a friend's house about ten blocks to her home. Although the search for Lindsey is tapering off, investigators still would like to talk to anyone who may have seen anything unusual in McCleary between 9 PM and 10 PM June 26th.

"You can't imagine the guilt"

Interviews with neighbors have turned up few leads, he added, and although Baum’s computer has been sent in for forensic testing, there is no guarantee that it will give detectives any information to help them find her.

Indeed, Kampen agreed that everyone who was with Lindsey the night she disappeared has already been through enough that they don’t need false information or criticism. Calling herself a glutton for punishment, Kampen has been on the Internet, in the chat rooms, where she said she has read plenty of jeremiads about her and her friends’ parenting skills.

Kampen said she has replayed that Friday evening in her head over and over. So has her daughter, Michaela, 10, who spent the day swimming with Lindsey. They walked together with Josh Baum, 13, to the Kampen house. But halfway there, Michaela said they teased Josh, getting under his skin enough so he turned around and couldn’t walk back with Lindsey. That’s something he now regrets deeply, Kampen said.

Search for missing McCleary girl ramps up
11:00 PM PDT on Friday, July 3, 2009
<snipped>
Investigators hope to speak with someone who always stops in McCleary on Friday nights for a beer, or who works out of town during the week and has not been available to investigators.

“It’s going to look like a police convention is in town,” said Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Rick Scott.

Scott also is urging people to report any unusual behavior that might point to an abductor, such as suddenly cutting or dyeing hair, an unexplained absence from work or cuts or bruises on the arms and face.

“Waiting for a call of hope
Saturday, July 4, 2009 1:13 AM PDT
<snipped>
“We’ve just been sitting by the phone, waiting for a call of hope,” said Melissa McCann, a close family friend of the Baums.

Late this week, investigators had sent Baum’s computer in for forensic testing. Scott said investigators had been able to gather some preliminary information, but it had “yielded nothing.”

As to when or if the search will expand to western parts of Grays Harbor and past the borders of neighboring counties, that depends on what happens by the end of the weekend.

“We’re going to evaluate everything and see what we need to do next,” Scott said. “As the ripples expand further, the miles of logging roads of timberland become so huge we can’t thoroughly search that. It’ll take a long time. The plan for next week will depend on what we can find out Saturday and Sunday.”

Law enforcement officials are asking anyone who might have any information about the whereabouts of Lindsey Baum to come forward with tips. Tips can be made by phone at 1-866-915-8299 or via e-mail at mailto:soadmin@co.grays-harbor.wa.us. They may also be mailed to PO Box 305 McCleary, WA 98557.

The ChildSeek Network has also put up a Web site about Baum.

Lindsey was last seen at the corner of 6th and Maple heading home from her friend's house at about 9:15 p.m last Friday.

Fonda Voss is making sure visitors to nearby Straddleline ORV park are being reminded about Lindsey's disappearance. It's a big travel destination and one of the entrances to the Capitol Forest.

"The trails are very big. The Capitol Forest is 80,000 acres. Just keeping people aware when they're out on the trail to just keep their eyes open. It's a big area out there," she says.

At the request of the FBI, Clear Channel Communications also has agreed to put an alert about Lindsey up on their brand new digital billboards through the Kent Valley.

Meanwhile, FBI agents will be working through the holiday weekend, following up on dozens of tips that continue to come in.

No strong leads in McCleary girl's disappearance
03:58 PM PDT on Saturday, July 4, 2009
<snipped>
Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Rick Scott says crews searched until 10 p.m. yesterday and are out again today. They have no strong leads.

"The likelihood that she's been removed from the community is growing ever greater because we've searched the whole community," Scott said.

Local police, Grays Harbor County deputies and officers from several surrounding communities are hitting the streets this weekend, in case a witness they haven’t spoken with happens to be in town. Scott said it will "look like a police convention is in town."

Investigators hope someone’s habits will help them find Lindsey. Scott is urging people to report any unusual behavior that might point to an abductor, such as suddenly cutting or dyeing hair, an unexplained absence from work or cuts or bruises on the arms and face.

Teekah Lewis' mother still looking for answers
05:49 PM PDT on Saturday, July 4, 2009
<snipped>
It's another holiday, and another birthday missed for one local family.

Teekah disappeared January 23, 1999 as she played at a Tacoma bowling alley. Police later believed the then 2-year-old was abducted.

"It's time for her to come home, I know someone knows where my daughter is at, and they need to come forward," says Lewis.

She also says she's trying to avoid coverage of the disappearance of another young girl, Lindsay Baum. The 10-year-old McCleary girl vanished more than a week ago.

Lewis shares the pain the Baum family is going through, and offers her own advice: "Don't never give up, you know she's out there somewhere. My heart goes out to you, being that I've been dealing with it for 10 years, and there isn't one that day doesn't go by that I don't think about my daughter."

On the 4th of July, it will have been 2-years since 12-year-old Zina Linnik was kidnapped behind her Tacoma home and murdered.

murder and got life in prison.

Zina's family is satisfied with his sentence, but Kalchik wants even tougher laws to keep people like Adhahn off the streets.

Meanwhile, police in the town of McCleary in Grays Harbor County are still trying to find 10-year-old Lindsey Baum who vanished a week ago. They fear she was kidnapped. Zina's father says, "I understand what they're going through because we had to go through exactly the same thing."

Community remains hopeful
Sunday, July 5, 2009 1:14 AM PDT
<snipped>
“No one who was here last Friday remembered anything,” said Undersheriff Rick Scott. “We received a few suggestions about where to look or who we might talk to who might have been in the area, but we haven’t received any suggestions so original that they haven’t already been (looked at) in some way or form. The community has been helpful with its support, but even they are running out of ideas.”

Baum’s father flew in from Tennessee late Friday evening. He and family members sat on the porch Saturday afternoon looking out at the road, as if expecting Baum to come running up the driveway. He said he didn’t feel like talking to a reporter. He spoke with the Sheriff’s Office Saturday morning, but “wasn’t able to offer much more information,” Scott said.

Scott said law enforcement officials will be spending the rest of the weekend continuing to go back over interviews that have already been conducted to see if any would warrant follow-up questions. He said the next steps would be expanding efforts into areas beyond McCleary and into Thurston County by enlisting the help of local citizens.

Searchers are still hopeful on day 10
Monday, July 6, 2009 12:12 PM PDT
<snipped>
Hope remains unwavering in the search for missing 10-year-old Lindsey Baum, but resources and ideas have started to dwindle as the effort enters its 10th day.

Grays Harbor Undersheriff Rick Scott said several officers have more than 120 hours into the case and tips over the hotline have dropped significantly in recent days.

“The community, I think, has kind of run out of ideas,” he said. “They know we’ve looked and looked and looked and haven’t found anything.”

Scott said volunteers and officers will continue re-canvasing much of the small town and outlying areas today. They will also move into the nearby off-road vehicle park as their search expands.

Search dogs have struggled to find any scent of the young girl despite several days of trying. Scott said new moisture in the ground from weekend weather may help.

Wet weather could help search for missing girl
12:34 PM PDT on Monday, July 6, 2009
<snipped>
Monday morning’s rain gave those looking for a missing 10-year-old girl new hope.

The effort was ramped up Monday morning because searchers said wet weather can enhance a person’s scent, especially in the woods.

Search dog teams from throughout the south Puget Sound area were back out searching Monday.

Searchers are focusing in the Straddleline Off Road Vehicle Park, about 3.5 miles from where Baum was last seen. The park consists of hundreds of miles of trails.

Police said they were not able to search the park last week because it was full of campers prior to the Fourth of July.

Cool weather reinvigorates search for missing girl
July 6, 2009
Updated 11 minutes ago.

It's been ten days since Lindsey Baum, 10, was reported missing in McCleary.

The search for Baum has tapered off, but Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Rick Scott says the change in weather is good for search and rescue teams. "The canines were affected by the heat."

Scott says their teams will be going deeper into wooded areas they've already searched and also focusing on the off road vehicle park east of McCleary. He adds that they're following up on leads and conducting deeper research, but there are no red flags.

ABDUCTION BECOMING MORE LIKELY AS LINDSEY BAUM SEARCH CONTINUES
<snipped>
Investigators are beginning to lean towards the fact that a 10 year old McCleary girl, missing since last Friday, was abducted. Undersheriff Rick Scott says the more time goes by and the more leads are investigated, the less likely it becomes that Lindsey Baum ran away or is playing a prank on her family. Scott says investigators continue to scour the East County town for information, but have not turned up any facts that would lead them to Lindsey.

Scott says it is possible that a McCleary resident may unknowingly be a neighbor, friend or family member of someone involved in Lindsey’s disappearance. With that in mind, the Sheriff’s office is asking people to report any odd changes in behavior. That could include selling a vehicle, changes in mood, dropping out of sight or other changes in attitude or habits.

Father of missing girl wants her home before he goes to Iraq

In his first public appearance since his daughter's disappearance last month, Scott Baum made a plea for her return.

"I'm fixing to deploy to Iraq and tomorrow is her birthday," Baum said Monday, "I would love nothing more than to see my daughter before I have to go."

The effort was ramped up Monday morning because searchers said wet weather can enhance a person’s scent, especially in the woods.

Scott Baum, who is in the National Guard in Tennessee, would not take questions from reporters.

"Please bring my daughter home," he said.
