2010.04.14 School Committee Meeting

A heavy police presence surrounded the school last night and one parent was taken from the hall after saying that officials should be hanged.

The comments reflected some of the rage that was directed at administrators.

Another two parents were ushered out of the building after calling for the removal of Boisselle, Superintendent Gus Sayer and Principal Dan Smith.

Prince family friend Darby O'Brien said: "I think it's time, Ed, that you stopped attacking other people. You need to hold the officials -- who could have stepped in at any time and stopped this -- accountable."

But the committee defended itself against the allegations, saying some parents had adopted a "mob mentality".

Some parents defended the administrators, arguing that they did all they could to protect Phoebe and should now be allowed to get on with their work
"Allowed to get on with their work"?? We've seen the results of their "WORK"! My goodness, therapy for all, I say...

"Shouting Erupts In Town Torn By Teen's Suicide
School Board Chairman Orders Parents Out Of Meeting"

In South Hadley, the town torn apart by a teen's suicide following bullying at the local high school, emotions erupted at the local school board meeting Wednesday night.
Police officers had to stop a fiery exchange between school board members and parents and escort several parents out of the meeting at the request of the board chairman.
Throughout the packed meeting Chairman Edward J. Boisselle banged the gavel and tried to quiet the crowd of about 100 parents who said they're won't stand silently by any longer, as they believe too many did, when Phoebe Prince, 15, was bullied at school.

applying to a school board meeting..
"The school board created a limited public forum when it opened its meetings for public comment, the judge held. As a designated public forum, the school board can only impose time, place and manner restrictions, but could not prohibit the speech based on its content. "

Boisselle might have deepened the problem for South Hadley...I hope those that were silenced sue...

A multi-million dollar lawsuit against the Clarke County School Board may be settled out of court.

A mediation hearing is going to be scheduled in May before a magistrate judge.

Berryville Resident Kenneth Liggins is suing the school board for $10.5 million. He says the board and a government official violated his civil rights and his freedom of speech during a public hearing two years ago.
Liggins claims board members told him to stop talking and sit down. Liggins, who is representing himself on the matter, says he is willing to try and settle outside of court.

And I hope South Hadley REALLY likes Smith and Sayer...it may cost them about 5.25 mil for each of them! ;)

From a college newspape, what example are these people setting for our youth?
From the April 8 issue of The New York Times: "We were aware of some of the things that changed for Phoebe, but we weren't aware of any bullying," Mr. Sayer said. "If she had said she was being bullied we would have acted on it immediately." [emphasis added]

That is bulls---. I'm not one to use vulgarity in a column, but I have never been so viscerally upset upon sitting down to write an article. Simply as a human being, but especially as a future teacher and as a former recipient of always malevolent and sometimes physically violent bullying, I was disgusted by this response.

Let me be clear: It is not in any way, shape or form Prince's fault that she was a victim of bullying. It was not her responsibility to explicitly spell out exactly what was happening to her. It was, however, the job of school officials and teachers to reach out to her in a meaningful way, and it is now the time for these people to own responsibility for allowing such acts of violence to culminate in a tragic suicide.

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) - Wednesday’s school committee meeting in South Hadley gave people the ability to respond to the bullying controversy that’s rocked their town. But, it also started controversy of it’s own when the basic right of freedom of speech was challenged.

22News showed video of the meeting to Bill Newman, a civil liberties lawyer. He said he couldn't speak directly to this incident. But, he did explain the law. He said " The decision to remove someone from a meeting and public speak time, the decision to cut somebody off cannot be based on the content. That is the viewpoint of what the speaker is saying."

Now, isn't this an interesting perspective...someone blaming Mr. Gelinas (sp?) for bad behavior?

Wow...is Southwick close to South Hadley? Maybe these people share the same water source...
South Hadley adults set poor example
The image of an angry adult being escorted by police from a South Hadley School Committee meeting about bullying strikes me as ironic. Isn’t one of our goals in preventing bullying and its damaging, if not horrific, effects to teach our children to communicate in non-aggressive ways?

I am late to this! So I am just catching up.
The quote about her being scared and wanting to call her mom/go home breaks my heart.

I don't know who all of the school board people are but what a bunch of hogwash!

I know. That hurt me, too. I just want to give the poor girl a hug...

The school board people..well...I don't have the energy tonight to express my outrage at the appropriate decibel.

Can you send me any articles you think I should read to catch up? There are SO SO many things to read and this case has grabbed my heart and mind.

Sure. I can put a few links together for you. Maybe I'll make a post with a few main links and post it on the #3 thread...if it's open. If not, I'll post it somewhere and let you know, better than pm'ing because this way if anyone else is new and wants a few basic links they can get it, too. I'll do it Saturday or Sunday...depending on what God has in store for me...;)

But like I said...there will be most missing. You can go back to the #1 thread and read there, too...lots of basic info there and on #2...

There is also the media thread...there is much there...
