CANADA Canada - Valerie Leblanc, 18, Gatineau QC, 23 Aug 2011

"OTTAWA — More than three months after the beaten and burned body of 18-year-old Valerie Leblanc was found behind a community college in Gatineau, Que., police will canvas the neighbourhood with questionnaires in hand, hoping for more detailed information.

Police released more information Tuesday about an "important witness" they are seeking, including details about the bike he was walking with as well as his "rather peculiar walk."

The sketch of the face of the main witness remains the same but police released more details about his walk, which they describe as strained.

"He has to make an effort to draw his leg from the back to the front and to shift his weight from one leg to the other," said Sgt. Jean-Paul Le May.

Police also said the man's bike appears to be a low-end model mountain bike with a red, diagonal line on the upper frame."

In a hi tech world, i would think the police could come up with an image of the type of low-end mountain bike, do they mean $500 or less or $100 bike.

Gatineau police say a new lead in the Valerie Leblanc murder case means they'll start conducting a major information-collecting operation in the city's Mont-Bleu district.

Police say they are looking for a key witness who walks with a limp and is the owner of a black bicycle with a red seat. A sketch of the seat was released at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

"We expect that by going door-to-door and releasing new information, we will find a resident who recognizes the bicycle, remembers certain details or makes a link to someone they noticed. We encourage the public to contact us with any information that might prove relevant, however insignificant it may seem. Never take for granted that the police already has the information you are thinking about," said Sgt. Jean-Paul Le May.

Police say the new information surfaced after receiving more than 1,000 tips.

Valerie Leblanc's murder investigation started late August after her body was found near the Gabrielle-Roy Pavillion at CEGEP de l'Outaouais.

Police want to remind the public the suspect is described as:

•white
•French-speaking
•20-35 years old
•5'10" to 6' tall
•200 lbs or more
•dark hair
•large hands
•thick neck
•chubby face with high cheekbones
•pointy nose and chin
•walks with a limp

The bicycle is described as a mountain bike with a straight handlebars. Police say the bike appears to be a lower end model and that it had mountain or hybrid tires.

Police have previously said an "important witness" was seen walking along with a bicycle. The bicycle is now described as a low-end mountain bike with a straight handlebar, with a diagonal red line on the upper frame and a black seat with a red center. [and that it had mountain or hybrid tires.]

They also said the witness was seen walking with a limp.

Police have also offered a $10,000 reward for information related to the case. The amount was raised by donations, police added.

Roughly 30 Gatineau police and Quebec provincial police officers canvassed the Mont Bleu neighbourhood this week and visited more than 1,500 homes, hoping for more detailed information. Police are now evaluating that information and following up on any leads.

Before the canvassing, police had received about 700 tips from the public. Some confirmed details about a witness they're looking for.

"OTTAWA — About 100 people braved below freezing temperatures to gather in Minto Park Tuesday in honour of 14 women killed at Ecole Polytechnique in 1989 and others who have died locally in the years since."

"Participants read out the names or familial relationship of those who have either been charged with or connected to their deaths, even though many of them have not been convicted.

They also read the names of other women whose deaths are still being investigated. This includes 18-year-old Valérie LeBlanc, whose body was found beaten and burned behind a wooded area behind the CEGEP de l’Outaouais Gabrielle-Roy campus on Aug 23."

Three of the accused were cleared in August, while the fourth person's case went to the Crown in late September.

"Of course they touched (the body), but we cannot say how and how (they) did it," said Crown spokesman Rene Verret. "The only thing we can tell you is we will not accuse (the person)."

Verret said the outcome depends on how the person touched the body and what the intent was.

And based on evidence and reports given by Gatineau police, it was decided not to lay any charges

Gatineau Police Continue Their Search for Witness in Leblanc Murder Case

"It’s now been two months since Gatineau police released a sketch of the main witness they are seeking in the Valerie Leblanc murder case.

And though police have received hundreds of tips since then, investigators are no closer to making an arrest.

The sketch showed the witness's face, and police had information about his deliberate walk and his bike.

But Pierre Lanthier with Gatineau Police says they haven't found him, and there's no arrest on the horizon.

He tells CFRA significant information was compromised when the murder scene was tampered with."

respectfully snipped by me

 I just cannot believe no charges were laid by the Quebec's director of criminal and penal prosecutions against any of the 4 teens!!

They not only tampered with Valerie's body, causing an "indignity" to her body, but also compromised the crime scene!!

JMHO

Bumping for Valerie and wishing her family some measure of peace in the new year.

Whoever said kids (and parents) have things easier these days?!

"Ottawa police west disivions Staff Sgt. Mark Myers said residents should “be aware” and try to avoid being alone at night in secluded areas. “Be careful because if someone’s watching you, it only takes one second...”

A detective from the sexual assault and child abuse section of the Ottawa Police Service has been assigned to the case.

Myers confirmed that part of the investigation involves reviewing security footage from the camera installed at the bus stop"

Given the location, I'm actually surprised this doesn't happen more often. I once walked through those woods(middle of the day, lots of walkers/bikers,etc.) because I didn't know the area and wasn't sure of a bus route to get me where I wanted to go, and the whole time I was constantly looking around and absolutely terrified.

I saw this headline today but didn't look at the story as I was on my way to work, my home/work is about 2-5 minute drive, 15 minute walk from there. My husband will be taking me to work from now on if I have to go before it's light out.

ETA: There are 4 shelters at that stop, one on each corner, and the one in the photo is probably the most likely one that was where the girl was assaulted(although none of the 4 are well lit at all) It's a pretty busy set of stops but in a very sketchy area(ie woods, secluded, no homes 'right'there) It's a stop for ALL the main downtown buses as well as the commuter buses and is considered a "station" even though they are all seperate stops on separate corners.

Police Still Searching for Witness and Suspect in Valerie Leblanc Murder

Anna Drahovzal with Kristi Soble
Monday, January 23, 2012

"After five months, and 1,200 tips, there are still no major developments in the murder case of 18-year old Valerie Leblanc
'

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottaw...u-police-valerie-leblanc-kelly-morisseau.html
"Morisseau, LeBlanc cases investigated

Gatineau police said they contacted Ottawa police to see what links could be made between the Ottawa crimes and two cases of their own: the 2006 death of 27-year-old Kelly Morrisseau, who was found dead in a parking lot near Gatineau Park, and the death of Valerie LeBlanc, the 18-year-old CEGEP student found outside her school last year.

Gatineau police Sgt. Pierre Lanthier said his force with the help of the Sureté du Quebec did extensive analysis of the two cases, and also looked at information coming out of Ottawa before determining there were no connections."

"The Gatineau Police Chief Mario Harel, took stock this morning police actions during the year 2011. "The record Valerie Leblanc has captured our attention, he said. It was an issue that has mobilized troops on a large scale and which required the establishment of measures that were unusual. "

In 2011, four murders have occurred in the territory of the Gatineau police. Three of these murders have been solved. Only the case of the young student at the Cégep de l'Outaouais, found in the woods behind the hotel, is still ongoing"
