A gunman kicked in the door of a Greenwell Street house early Sunday, shot a woman and two children inside, then rifled through her purse before shooting them again on his way out, police said.
The shooting at 3028 Greenwell St. left a 12-year-old boy critically wounded and his mother and 16-year-old sister in serious but stable condition, said Sgt. Charles Armstrong, a spokesman for the Police Department.

Armstrong said the shooter fired at least two shots at the mother, who is in her mid-40s, two at the boy and one at the girl.

Several doors down the street, Ronald Butler saw his wife off to work just before 6 a.m. Sunday, made a cup of coffee and walked down his driveway to check out the neighborhood.

Butler said he saw a small boy hunched over, leaning against a chain link fence a few houses down. Butler said that when he asked what was wrong, the boy replied that he and his mother and sister had just been shot.

Butler said he ran back to his house and dialed 911. By the time he made the call, he said, the boy had stumbled through his front door and collapsed on his couch.

In front of the house where the shooting occurred, a large pile of bed mattresses, chairs and magazines was still smoldering about noon. Armstrong said investigators didn't know whether the fire was set by the shooter or by someone else.

Butler said he didn't know the family well because they had just moved in a week ago, but he knew the pile of burned household goods was old stuff they were getting rid of as they moved in.

What a horrible story! I cannot imagine the type of person who would do such a thing. This is so sad. It's strange that he shot them more than once, and yet they all are still alive. I hope and pray they'll make it and can identify the perp.

God bless them!
