Today Show's Lilia Luciano Axed for George Zimmerman 911 Call

"NBC reporter Lilia Luciano is now the third news staffer fired for her role in misleading the public about George Zimmerman's 911 call to the police the night he killed Trayvon Martin.

Perhaps all these people made simple mistakes by airing a poorly edited version of the 911 call, but it's not likely.

These are people who are experts in audio production, and they were quite aware of what they were doing. They sewed two separate pieces of audio together to create the impression Zimmerman is a racist redneck."

George Zimmerman’s lawyer is using social media like a pro.

"In cases like Zimmerman’s, though, the media will serve up endless coverage whether O’Mara stays silent or goes on TV every day. (The prosecutor in the case announced the charges against Zimmerman in a nationally televised press conference while the screen behind her flashed adorable pictures from Trayvon Martin’s childhood.) The defense is responding to the coverage, not driving it."

Prelude to a Shooting

"During the time Zimmerman was in hiding, his detractors defined him as a vigilante who had decided Martin was suspicious merely because he was black. After Zimmerman was finally arrested on a charge of second-degree murder more than six weeks after the shooting, prosecutors portrayed him as a violent and angry man who disregarded authority by pursuing the 17-year-old.

But a more nuanced portrait of Zimmerman has emerged from a Reuters investigation into Zimmerman's past and a series of incidents in the community in the months preceding the Martin shooting."

Trayvon Martin family wraps up Birmingham visit

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT)- The family of slain teen Trayvon Martin wrapped up their tour of Birmingham with a little sight-seeing. After a fellowship breakfast at their hotel, the family visited the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. They had planned a meet-and-greet with 16th Street pastor Reverend Arthur Price, but a baggage mix-up delayed and eventually cancelled the meeting. The family spoke of the warm reception they've received all over the country, but particularly in Birmingham, the heart of the civil rights movement. "It was important for us to visit Birmingham, [because] they did honor Trayvon as an honorary citizen of the city of Birmingham. We felt a debt of gratitude," says his father Tracy Martin.

During their visit, the family raised awareness about conflict resolution, as well as funds for the newly formed Trayvon Martin Foundation. The next stop for the family: London, because they feel this issue is not limited to the United States.

George Zimmerman Pleads Not Guilty To Trayvon MartinMurder Charges

May 8, 2012

Zimmerman, his attorney, and the lead prosecutors in the case are preparing for the discovery part of trial preparation. The disclosure by the prosecution of all relevant documents in this case could come as early as his week. Much of it will be redacted in order to protect the identity of witnesses.

Zimmerman's attorney tells ABC News that he is expecting to be inundated with thousands of documents related to the case. Included in the files are expected to be hundreds sent to the Sanford, Fla., police department about the case, some of them apparently racist in nature.

George Zimmerman, Trayvon Martin case: Interim Police Chief Richard Myers talks neighborhood watch

Myers says watch programs need 'good, hard look'

Posted: 4:36 AM

•CNN Wire Staff
The man tasked with leading the police department in Sanford, Florida, in the wake of the Trayvon Martin killing said communities should "take a good, hard look at who is selected," for neighborhood watch programs.

But, said Sanford's interim Police Chief Richard Myers, he still supports the programs.

"Neighborhood watch is at work in literally thousands of neighborhoods across the country and with no problems whatsoever," Myers told CNN's Erin Burnett on Tuesday. "I think the problems emerge from who the person is and perhaps there's a cause for communities to take a good, hard look at who is selected or who volunteers.

"Let's not kill the concept because of one bad, really bad outcome."

In a letter to the NAACP his family refuted the allegation(s), and provided specific example of how George had put himself on the line for his black community.

The letter also described how Zimmerman was one of “very few” in Sanford, Fla., who spoke out publicly to condemn the “beating of the black homeless man Sherman Ware on December 4, 2010 by the son of a Sanford police officer.”:

“Do you know the individual that stepped up when no one else in the black community would?” the family member wrote. “Do you know who spent tireless hours putting flyers on the cars of persons parked in the churches of the black community? Do you know who waited for the church‐goers to get out of church so that he could hand them fliers in an attempt to organize the black community against this horrible miscarriage of justice? Do you know who helped organize the City Hall meeting on January 8th, 2011 at Sanford City Hall??”

“That person was GEORGE ZIMMERMAN. Ironic isn’t it?”
BUT THEN THERE IS THIS: Purported Zimmerman family letter demands NAACP 'call off the dogs'

From page 2:

Indeed, the city's record and minutes of public meetings at Sanford city hall show that no meeting or workshop took place on January 8th.

January 8th was a Saturday, which would have been an unusual day to convene a commission meeting, particularly without all five elected members.

McCarty said the January 3rd special meeting called by the then- outgoing mayor, Linda Kuhn, was for the sole purpose of creating a process to pick a new chief of police. Ware is not mentioned in the minuted of either the January 3rd or January 10th commission meetings.

Zimmerman gets continuance
2:56 p.m. EST, May 9, 2012|By Rene Stutzman, Orlando Sentinel

A judge has granted George Zimmerman's request for a continuance, meaning his attorney is not due back in court in Sanford until Aug. 8.

Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester Jr. signed that order Tuesday, the same day defense attorney Mark O'Mara filed his request for the delay.

What's being delayed is a routine hearing called "docket sounding," a proceeding that often lasts less than five minutes at which attorneys tell the judge the status of their cases and what work still needs to be done, for example, that a witness needs to be deposed or the state needs to turn over a security camera photo that's in evidence.

The continuance bought O'Mara six more weeks. Without it, he would have been due back in court June 27.
