Campers find two human skulls in a remote area near Grande Prairie
Something in the air just wasn’t right.
For the past three or four years, Derek Jenner and a dozen friends have spent their May long weekend camping and riding quads in a remote area half an hour southeast of Grande Prairie, five kilometres east of Bezanson and south on Forestry Trunk Road.
This year, a persistent odour was in the air, something rotten that lingered on and off all day Friday and Saturday.

Prime suspect in McCann's disappearance makes court appearance
The man considered a suspect in the disappearance of Lyle and Marie McCann appeared in a Mayerthorpe courtroom Tuesday for a preliminary hearing on charges unrelated to the couple.
Travis Vader is answering to 13 charges, from arson to theft over $5,000.
He's never been charged in connection to the McCanns' disappearance, only named a suspect.

Vader's court case put off until Aug.
The court case against the man considered a suspect in the disappearance of Lyle and Marie McCann has been put of until late August.
Travis Vader was expected to go to trial in the Town of Evansburg. He is facing 16 charges including drug possession, firearms offences and resisting arrest. But the defence lawyer said he didn't have full disclosure from the Crown after taking over for Vader's original council.

Search continues for missing couple
As the one year anniversary of the disappearance of an elderly St. Albert couple looms, RCMP and other search and rescue personnel are picking up the search for Lyle and Marie McCann.
The couple disappeared July 3, 2010, after leaving in their RV to visit friends in British Columbia.
Their motorhome was found burned on July 5, and the vehicle they were towing was found abandoned four days later.
The only person of interest in the case, Travis Vader, is currently behind bars on unrelated charges.

Search continues nearly one year later
It's been almost a year since the disappearance of Lyle and Marie McCann, who were last seen gassing up in St. Albert in early July. Their burned out motorhome was found a couple days later southeast of Edson, on a site near Lodgepole, Alberta. That's where a civilian crew focused their search efforts on Sunday, spending the day navigating the rough terrain on quads and foot, looking for anything out of the ordinary.

Members of the family of a St. Albert couple missing for almost a year say they have been briefed by RCMP following another search.
The latest search for Lyle and Marie McCann took place in dense bush in a remote area near Lodgepole, southwest of Drayton Valley, this past weekend.

McCanns hope obit, service bring closure
The family of a St. Albert couple missing for more than a year are taking steps toward closure.
Lyle and Marie McCann were last seen fuelling up their motorhome at the St. Albert Superstore gas bar on July 3, 2010, as they headed for B.C. to meet up with their daughter for a vacation. They never arrived.
This week, the family placed an obituary for their parents in the St. Albert Gazette, which will run today and Wednesday. They have also planned a memorial service for Saturday, July 30.

McCanns declared legally dead
The family of Lyle and Marie McCann has asked the court to declare the couple legally deceased. It's been more than one year since the elderly St. Albert couple disappeared after leaving for a trip to B.C.
The family of the couple has accepted that they are no longer alive. And with a year now passed, the reality of dealing with the couple's estate and other issues had led the family to making it official.
Last week, along with a letter from the RCMP, the couple's son asked the court to declare them legally deceased, and Bret McCann says a judge agreed.

Son of missing couple accepts his parents are gone
The son of an Alberta couple whose parents went missing more than a year ago says he has come to accept he will never see his parents again, since receiving a letter from the RCMP informing his family the couple was probably murdered.
"It's difficult to read the words ‘murdered' associated with my parents, but we've come to accept over the last year that my parents are gone," Bret McCann told CTV's Canada AM on Thursday.

Suspect in missing couple case claims jail abuse
The suspect in the disappearance and presumed deaths of an Alberta couple last summer is applying to the courts to have unrelated charges against him dropped, alleging that jail guards have repeatedly abused him.

In a court filing Monday, Travis Vader says he's been beaten and abused by guards, improperly forced into solitary confinement, and locked in a feces- and urine-laden cell for many hours, all at the Edmonton Remand Centre.

It's been over a year since my parents went missing, and they're still not found,” said McCann. "We're hoping to attract the attention of hunters and those going into the bush this fall and get them to keep an eye out for anything suspicious."

The family partnered with RCMP and Alberta Sustainable Resources to distribute leaflets with every hunting licence sold in the area.

"These people are going to be going into areas no one has been in years," said McCann.


"This could be crucial in solving this mystery."


"A reward of $60,000 is available for any information leading to the couple's whereabouts."
 
McCann family wants closure
Though the family of missing seniors Lyle and Marie McCann have officially said goodbye, they’re not giving up hope they’ll one day solve the mystery of their disappearance.

The family gathered near Edson on Friday at one of the billboards offering a reward for information on the couple.

Suspect in disappearance of Edmonton area couple on trial for 14 unrelated charges
A man who has been identified as the only suspect in the 2010 disappearance of Lyle and Marie McCann is on trial in Edmonton facing a number of charges for an alleged crime spree in December 2009.
Travis Vader, 38, faces charges including break and enter, dangerous driving, disqualified driving, theft, possession of stolen property, and causing damage by setting fire. The charges are unrelated to the high-profile McCann case, and relate to a four-day period in December 2009 in the Whitecourt, Barrhead and Mayerthorpe areas.

A suspect in the disappearance of a St. Albert, Atla., couple was found guilty Thursday on a dozen non-related charges.

Vader alleges video shows remand centre assault
Travis Vader alleges video entered at his sentencing hearing for property crimes shows corrections officers assaulting him at the Edmonton Remand Centre last year.

Vader, the only person to be identified as a suspect in the July 2010 disappearance of Lyle and Marie McCann, claims guards beat, kicked and kneed him in the October 2010 incident.

He is asking for a reduced sentence on because of this alleged mistreatment.
