Zahra's memorial and where to be buried.

One last cruel act towards poor Emily by the Bakers, at the very least they could have informed her, and given her the opportunity to attend.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Zahra’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (1.800.805.5856).

-----a worthwhile charity-hospital i'm sure, (as AY had been proclaiming on his f/b for days back in october.)

------the place she truly enjoyed----"camp quality" makes so much mre sense to me --
---very unfair that they only list one maternal 'relative'------her mum.---when in fact there are many---

"–the step-brother Douglas doesn’t count? how about —-emily’s ENTIRE side of the family?!? “nicole dawson—sister of emily, says: -”-Zahra has grandparents, aunties, uncles and cousins in the Wagga area who are dealing with the loss in different ways.”

I can not fault KB in all of this. No, I don't understand her standing beside her son, but it's probably not my place to try understand that. I have no children. I do know that KB appears to have been a rock for Zahra through her awful ordeal with cancer...for that reason alone, I can find some respect for KB.

What appalls me is that neither AB nor KB can seem to find it in their hearts to show any compassion at all to Zahra's mother. This is a woman consumed with grief...what would it cost the Bakers to show this woman just a tiny bit of respect or kindness? Nothing. And yet, they can't bring themselves to give it. That doesn't speak well of them, imo. At a memorial where Zahra's life should be the focus, the Bakers once again elevate their own pettiness.

Shame on them.

I guess they didn't like the negative press. #$%$$##.

Zahra is survived by her father, Adam Baker of Hudson, NC; her mother, Emily Dietrich of Australia; paternal grandparents, Karen and Tony Baker of Australia; aunts and uncles, Kate Baker, Gemma Bell, Donna Shaw, David Baker, Scott Baker and Dale Baker, all of Australia; great-aunt, Mandy Edwards of Australia; great-uncles, Lance Edwards and Stephen Edwards, both of Australia; great-grandmother, Lola Edwards of Australia; and step-sisters, Amber Fairchild and Brittany Starbuck.

It truly does read like PR, doesn't it?

I see the obligatory mention of Emily's name. Of course, no way the Bakers could avoid that...all of Hickory has stood witness to this woman's grief. And then I see mention of alot of Bakers, and 2 of Elisa Baker's children. How sweet. Does Emily not have parents? Siblings? Does Emily not have children who are the blood siblings of Zahra? A simple call from AB or KB could have produced the names of the other side of Zahra's family for this obituary, had anyone had any interest what-so-ever in doing the right thing here. They obviously weren't interested in that.

Immaturity, pettiness, and "Vengence", seems to be something BOTH AB and his family thrive on.

Reading one of the guestbook entries immediately made me think of my signature here.

(sigh)

Once again I sit shaking my head in disbelief. Not much time to be on here lately, but still trying to keep up.

KB certainly sounds like she is in 'damage control' mode doesn't she....just a little too late. All her, and her family's earlier comments about Emily have been logged and recorded so it is pointless for her to attempt to rewrite history now. We are all witnesses to their past and ongoing nastiness towards Emily. The obituary excluding Emily's family, Zahra's half siblings, maternal grandparents etc, and their failure to give Emily fair notice is just the latest example.

Oh, and congratulations Bakers on finding a way to keep Emily from being the one to lay Zahra to rest, and circumventing our own Prime Minister's promise to help her do so. I hope you are very proud of yourselves.

I'm confused from being away - is this no longer just a memorial service? Have they released the remains for burial this week?

Last I remember is that this is just a memorial.

Zahra's family is making funeral arrangements with the Drum funeral home, according to the obituary, but staff there said burial plans have not yet been made.

Oh so maybe I was confused.....Zahra's remains still being returned to Australia? I thought the title at the end of the obit meant she was being cremated 'The family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 940 29th Ave. NE, Hickory, NC.' She's not?

Confusing indeed...

Does anyone know if this Funeral Home has any connection to the same 'Drum' family as K Drum BB's mother? Just curious..

From what I gather, the funeral home is a "Funeral Home and Cremation Services" facility, but Zahra's remains have not yet been released, and this is simply a memorial service. The details of the burial are still undecided, from what I understand.

ETA: The obit says "A Celebration of Life Service will be held 7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 2, 2010 in the Chapel of Drum Funeral Home in Hickory with the Reverend Larry Cooley officiating." Celebration of her life might be just a service. I see no details about internment.

Anyone know if any of that changed since yesterday? I would be very surprised if the remains were released already.

Please, no one sleuth the owners of the funeral home, or the Drum family.

wow, that was some hiccup websleuths! Sorry bout your indigestion! I couldn't anything to load for nuttin, lol

Along with the obvious omission of Emily's children in Au, I'm Wondering why Zahra's step-sisters (AB's daughters) were named in the obit, but Zahra's step-brother, Douglas Proctor was not?

There is no one by the name Drum listed as being affiliated with the mortuary, on their "about us" - "our staff" at the link.

Sorry Ducky - I wasn't trying to sleuth them, just noticed the name when I went to the link after seeing the post in the Hickory news yesterday.

Maybe this has already been discussed, so forgive if so, but does the wording in the obit seem odd to anyone but me?

"She had a beautiful smile, an energetic personality and a wonderful sense of humor that gave her the ability to turn the worst possible situation into a fun situation."

"Gave her the ability to turn the worst possible situation into a "fun" situation. "Fun" ??? Considering how she died and her quality of life with EB & AB, I hardly think she was able to make that "fun". Poor choice of wording there, I think.

Hi Capri! I totally agree with you. The other one that struck a nerve was "She was a strong, courageous and fun person...".

I know I sound petty but to use the word person? Heaven forbid that an obituary be personal. Why not call her daughter, granddaughter, sister or even child? It made me mad all over again at the detachment shown. Shame, shame, shame.
