6:30 p.m. update

Ten to 15 people met at the white building on the corner of Eppes Drive and Airport Drive to start searching for their friend 29-year-old Vincent Binder.

Binder was last seen at his friends' apartment on the corner of Eppes Drive and Airport Drive at the The Lakes of University Center gated complex on April 2 at 12:30 a.m. Friends asked Binder if he wanted a ride to his Lipona Road apartment which is about a mile away from their complex.

Beth Frady said Binder declined the ride.

Vincent Binder 29 Missing Grad Student April 02 2010 FLORIDA

Florida State University graduate student Vincent Binder, 29, has been missing ever since he left a friend's house last week. On April 02, 2010, at 12:30 a/m he turned down a ride home and instead said he will walk. Being from New York his friends did not find that surprising as he liked to walk. However, he has not been seen since and has not shown up to his classes where he is an active graduate student and teacher's assistant, and also the coach of the debate team. This is out of his character and police ask if anyone has any information to please come forward. Vincent is described as: 5-foot-10 tall with blue eyes and brown hair and weighs 180 pounds.

A dozen or so Tallahassee Police officers scoured the neighborhood surrounding Palmer Munroe Community Center Monday afternoon, talking with neighbors, hoping to unearth any clues that might be a missing piece in the disappearance of Vincent Binder.

The 29-year-old's friends tell me it would be completely out of character for him to just pack up and go, but beyond just that, he doesn't have a car and his bike was found inside his apartment.

Eleven days ago, Vincent Binder left his friend's apartment at the Lakes and started walking home down Airport Drive.

Since then, it seems the 29-year-old Graduate student of Communication at FSU has vanished into thin air.

"Then I started talking to all the professors asking have you seen him, has he shown up for classes. Once that didn't happen, something was wrong," says Vince's friend, Beth Frady.

Friends and colleagues spent the weekend wading in water, scouring the area he was last seen, looking for any sign of Vince.

"It's horrendous. It's a heavy burden to carry around," says Frady.

His friends handed out more than 60 ribbons Monday to those who know Vince from school, keeping him at the forefront of all of their minds.

"He cared for everybody around him and this is sort of our return of that all coming together to care for him as much as he cared for the people that he interacted with everyday," says Vince's friend, Nicole Cox.

Flyers have been put up all across the capital city. The hope is that as people walk up to pay their bills, they'll see the flyers, hopefully jogging their memories and giving crucial clues to Police.

So far, the Tallahassee Police Department's investigation has turned up dry, but a tip has landed two investigators in Miami, Florida since Friday.

Police won't say, what they're doing there and what they're hoping to find.

Investigators won't say if foul play is suspected at this time, but they also haven't ruled it out.

Friends are holding a prayer vigil on FSU's campus Tuesday, April 12th at 8 p.m. at Langford Green on Florida State's Campus.

UPDATE: 10:51 PM Apr 12, 2010

updated 4-12 at 10:45pm by Candace Sweat

It's been almost two weeks since a FSU Grad Student was last seen, and there are still no signs of his whereabouts.

But the Tallahassee Police department is not giving up, and hit the streets Monday to find any clues that may lead them in the direction of Vince Binder.

The search began around 3pm on Monday with a briefing at Palmer Monroe Community Center. From there, twelve officers spread out to canvass the neighborhood along Airport Road and Altkamire Drive. It's the area where they say Binder was last seen.

Meanwhile, those who knew Binder on a personal level are busy doing some investigation of their own. They say it's completely out of character for him to just up an leave.

"He had a ton of responsibilities. He loved those responsibilities. And for him not to show up to those responsibilities is a big huge red flag," said Binder's friend Beth Frady.

A tip has led two investigators to Miami, Florida, but police aren't giving specifics about why they're there.

They do say they're not giving up hope that someone out there has the information they need.

Friends are holding a prayer vigil on FSU's campus Tuesday, April 12th at 8 p.m. at Langford Green on Florida State's Campus.

Though they're not releasing the specifics,
Tallahassee police announced Monday that
investigators have noted a series of suspicious
activities after reviewing the financial and phone
records of a missing Florida State graduate student.

Since Friday, TPD has had investigators in Miami to
follow leads in the disappearance of Vince Binder.
The 29-year-old communications student was last
seen at about 12:30 a.m. on April 2, when he was
seen walking from the apartment of two friends at
Airport and Eppes drives to his apartment at Lipona
Drive.

A group of about 10 officers paired off to canvass
the neighborhood where Binder often walked or
biked. They knocked on doors showing residents a
flyer of Binder and asking if they'd seen him.
Officers connected with residents who live on a
variety of streets south of Jackson Bluff Road,
including Mayhew Street, Atkamire Drive, and
Airport Drive.

"We're trying to make contact with anyone who might
have seen or heard anything," Lt. Dewey Riou said.
"We're not looking for anyone in particular."

Binder's friends and classmates distributed about 60
white ribbons — they're calling them Binder Bows —
as a reminder to continue talking about Binder's
disappearance. An 8 p.m. vigil is scheduled for
today at Langford Green near Doak Campbell
Stadium.

The FSU College of Communication and Information
is holding a meeting at 5 p.m. today in 1101 of
University Center for students, faculty and staff with
any questions.

Binder is 5-foot-8, 180 pounds, with blue eyes and
brown hair. Anyone with information is asked to
contact TPD at 891-4200.

3 Louisiana prison escapees captured in Miami-Dade hotel

BY ADAM H. BEASLEY
ABEASLEY@MIAMIHERALD.COM
Millions of tourists visit South Florida every spring to escape their daily mundanity, stress or simply the cold.

For three men from Louisiana, Miami-Dade County recently provided a brief -- albeit highly illegal -- respite from bars and shackles.

While Quentin M. Truehill, Kentrell F. Johnson and Peter M. Hughes made their way to Florida in a stolen truck, they will likely hitch a ride back to Avoyelles Parish jail in Marksville, La., in the armed custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Thirteen days after using a homemade shank to force their way out of jail, their illicit holiday came to an abrupt end Monday, when authorities cornered the escaped convicts at a West Little River motel.

``These guys are the worst of the worst, no doubt about it,'' said Barry Golden of the Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force. ``These are guys our [department] is designed to go after.''

The Associated Press reported that Tallahassee police said one of the men may have been involved in the disappearance of a Florida State University stu- dent, Vincent Binder, 29, last seen on April 2.

Their back story, as provided by the U.S. Marshals, reads like a Hollywood script.

Truehill, 22; Hughes, 22; and Johnson, 39, all have a history of violent crime and ended up serving hard time together at Avoyelles Parish.

Early on the morning of March 30, they made their escape. They held a makeshift knife to a guard's neck and demanded to be let free. The corrections officer complied -- but not before another guard tried to intervene and was cut on the hand for his trouble.

Authorities chased the escapees with dogs but lost them in the woods. The trio was able to steal a black Chevy 2500 pickup truck from a nearby home and fled the area.

Over the next few days, they drove through Louisiana, across Mississippi and Alabama before making it to Florida. Their destination: the home of Miami-Dade resident Shirley Marcus, 40.

Authorities believe they arrived in South Florida on or around April 4, and hid out here with Marcus' help before checking into the Budget Inn at 8929 NW 27th Ave. on Monday.

Little did they know that time was running out on their newfound freedom.

Last Wednesday, authorities discovered their stolen truck, which they abandoned at Haulover Park. Inside the vehicle was a bloody knife, along with cash receipts and other pieces of evidence that ultimately led police Monday to the Budget Inn.

Detectives first caught up with Truehill -- who had been serving a 30-year manslaughter sentence -- and Hughes, who along with Marcus were pulling into the hotel in her car. A half-hour later and a few blocks away, they picked up Johnson. All three surrendered without incident.

They will remain in county lock-up on escape charges and await extradition back to Louisiana. Marcus has been charged with harboring a fugitive and accessory after the fact.

Fugitives Arrest Linked To Missing FSU Student
Police believe it is likely that the fugitives were involved in two robberies in Tallahassee and possibly the disappearance of Vincent Binder.

Three prison escapees are under arrest in Miami and one admits to being involved in the disappearance of missing FSU graduate student, Vincent Binder.

The bottom line is Vincent Binder is still missing but the arrest of three prison escapees in Miami has them one step closer to finding out to what happened to him.

Quentin Truehill, Peter Hughes and Kentrell Johnson were arrested at a Budget Inn in Miami Monday night.

U.S. Marshals say the men were doing time for robbery and manslaughter when they held a knife to a prison guard and escaped.

Investigators did find a bloody knife in a stolen truck the men were driving as well as some identification and some receipts which led back to Tallahassee.

One of the men admitted to being involved in Binder's disappearance but didn't say much more.

Officer David McCranie with the Tallahassee Police Department says,
"We certainly have a mountain of information, evidence, phone records, financial records...things are certainly moving in the right direction. But again our focus right now is to find Mr. Binder and make sure he's okay and if he's not okay make sure those responsible are brought to justice."

Tallahassee police believe the escapees were involved in two robberies in Tallahassee the night Binder disappeared.

One was at the Walgreen's on Tennessee Street and another was at an apartment complex on White Drive. Police say the men did use a weapon in those robberies but wouldn't specify. Right now they don't know if the fugitives have any link to Tallahassee or if they were just passing through.

Late Tuesday afternoon, U.S. Marshals released surveillance video of the fugitives. It shows the men going through a drive-thru in North Miami in a stolen Chevy truck.

Two important details-- it was April 4th- just two days after Binder disappeared and it was actually a Burger King receipt in that truck that helped Marshals track them down.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The world is getting pretty messed up when you can't even walk from point A to point B without taking your life into your hands -- geez

Tallahassee Police on Monday said they were investigating "suspicious activities after reviewing financial and phone records" belonging to Binder. But officers from the department didn't publicly link Binder's disappearance to the escapees until Tuesday afternoon, saying Miami Police had found identification in the truck the three men reportedly stole, linking it to Tallahassee.

No body has been found.

Update: Missing FSU student's cousins retaining some hope

DEMOCRAT STAFF REPORT • APRIL 15, 2010

Anthony and Revi Mussolino came to Tallahassee three days ago to find their cousin: missing Florida State University graduate student Vincent Binder.

The couple from Brooklyn, New York said what happened to their cousin is slowly becoming clear with the recent news that three Louisiana fugitives may have something to do with Binder's disappearance.

"But we have no evidence where he is," Revi said. "We know (authorities) found documents of Vince (in a truck believed to have been used by the fugitives). We know they were using his credit cards...We just don't know what they've done with Vincent."

Binder was last seen at about 12:30 a.m. on April 2, when he was seen walking from the apartment of three friends at Airport and Eppes drives to his duplex at Lipona Drive.

Anthony said: "We still have hope. You never know."

Missing FSU student from Jupiter

April 14, 2010 5:13 PM

A former Jupiter High School student and FSU grad student vanishes without a trace. And now, police are connecting his disappearance to three dangerous jail escapees, now back in custody. They were arrested Monday in Miami. Tonight local friends of 29-year-old Vince Binder are speaking out. This grad student with a lot going for him grew up in Jupiter. He was last seen April 2nd walking from an apartment after visiting friends in north Florida. People who knew him best say he's not someone who would just take off.

A friend, Bill Reno, said, "When this happens you think never me, never my friend, and this is really hitting home."

Friends have set up a website called helpvince.com with the latest on the search and how you can help.
