Last weekend, a grandmother said, she had to decide which of her grandsons to believe about what happened to Haleigh Cummings.

The first grandson, Hank “Tommy” Croslin Jr., called from jail saying his cousin entered the Satsuma trailer with a knife that night in February 2009 and left with 5-year-old Haleigh.

Shell Harbor area Search for Missing Haleigh Cummings Update
2010-4-15 by: Lt. Johnny Greenwood

At approximately 4:00 pm, Sheriff Jeff Hardy made a formal statement regarding the Haleigh Cummings Investigation. A synopsis of the statement is as follows:

Three days ago the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by divers from surrounding counties began a diligent search of the waterway and wooded area around the Shell Harbor Boat Ramp. The search is the result of information obtained during interviews in the Haleigh Cummings case. Items have been recovered at the search site, but at this point it is not known if these items are related to the Haleigh Cummings investigation. All items located during this search will be forwarded to several independent labs for analysis.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous inquiries regarding the status of this investigation, specifically if this is a missing person investigation or a homicide investigation. Over the past few weeks information has been obtained by investigators that lead them to believe Haleigh Cummings is most likely deceased. The specific details of this information cannot be released at this time.

There have been rumors spreading that a suspect has been taken into custody as the result of this investigation. This rumor is not true. However, the investigative team has identified persons of interest in this case.

Additional information will released as investigators determine it is prudent to do so.

Haleigh Cummings: The latest developments are as murky as St. Johns River

Television stations have seized on images of a search at the St. Johns River and Misty Croslin’s being taken there Wednesday afternoon. Croslin was watching the Satsuma girl when the child disappeared in February last year.

WKMG-Channel 6, WESH-Channel 2 and WFTV-Channel 9 offered updates at noon today on the third day of the St. Johns search.

WOFL-Channel 35’s Kelly Joyce last night reported that something was taken from the river yesterday. But Joyce explained that Putnam County law enforcement won’t talk to reporters until there’s another major development in the case.

The Croslin family tree has been a bit confusing, too.

"Over the past couple of weeks, information has been obtained by investigators that leads them to believe that Haleigh Cummings is most likely deceased," Hardy said.

Hardy wouldn't disclose specific details about what led to the change in the status of the case.

However, Hardy said items were pulled from the river and sent to a laboratory for analysis. He said no arrests had been made in the Haleigh case, but there were several persons of interest.

The sheriff said he believes Misty Cummings holds the key to the case.

"People are starting to cooperate. That's why I've told people it's just going to be a matter of time," Hardy said. "We're going to accept any cooperation we can get."

Sheriff 'comfortable' calling Haleigh Cummings case a homicide
April 15, 2010 - 4:25pm
<snipped>
For the first time since Haleigh Cummings went missing 14 months ago, Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy said he believes the case is a homicide.

Misty Croslin, who was at the mobile home when Haleigh disappeared, was taken to the boat ramp late Wednesday afternoon. Hardy would not talk about what Croslin said at the ramp but said that people are starting to cooperate.

"She's come to realize she's in trouble," he said of Croslin.

Hardy said investigators would work the case for as long as it takes. "I'm not going to give up on this little girl and this family," he said.

The sheriff did say he's calling off three-day search for now around the Shell Harbor Boat Ramp off County Road 309 about five miles from where Haleigh disappeared from her Satsuma home.

He said some items have been recovered for testing but would not elaborate. He said 15 to 30 divers were out there each day pulling in "alligator toenails to you name it." "It's like looking for needles in a haystack, but we were willing to make that effort," Hardy said.

Haleigh Cummings: Haleigh Cummings is most likely dead, and persons of interest have been identified

“Over the past few weeks, information has been obtained by investigators that lead them to believe that Haleigh Cummings is most likely deceased,” Hardy told reporters.

But Hardy said those details cannot and will not be released today. Hardy said “persons of interest” have been identified in this case. But he would not name them today and he dismissed a rumor that a suspect had been taken into custody.

“It’s a good thing. People are starting to talk,” Hardy said.

Haleigh Cummings dead, authorities say
Misty Croslin’s grandmother said she passed along leads from Misty to investigators.

<snipped>
"Over the past few weeks information has been obtained by investigators that lead them to believe Haleigh Cummings is most likely deceased," Hardy said during a brief news conference near the St. Johns River near Satsuma where investigators concluded a third day of searching and diving for evidence.

Hardy said Haleigh's former stepmother, Misty Croslin, is still the key to the case and that investigators had identified several "persons of interest." Hardy would not identify those persons. No arrests have been made. Detectives brought Croslin to the riverside on Wednesday, though it's unclear what she told them. She is being held in the St. Johns County Jail on unrelated drug trafficking charges.

It's a "very real possibility" Haleigh died within the search area, Hardy said.

He declined to say what items were removed from the river or what type of testing was to be performed. An anthropologist was on scene to help investigators determine what might be potential evidence. Just before the searching ended Thursday, Hardy said his department is committed to closing this case with an arrest.

"We're trying to bring somebody to justice for this little girl and her family," he said. "I am confident. I am not going to give up on this little girl and her family."

Tips obtained during interviews have led various law enforcement agencies who have been searching for the girl to believe Haleigh is no longer alive, said Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy.

He added no arrests have been made but persons of interest have been identified.

"At this point, I'm going to say I'm comfortable calling it a homicide," Hardy said during a brief news conference this afternoon.

Detectives Now Believe Haleigh Was Killed

The sheriff acknowledged what many people have feared for the past 14 months, that the disappearance of Haleigh Cummings is a homicide.

Investigators on foot and on boats, even divers in the water, continued to scour the area Thursday, just five miles from where the girl disappeared.

Officials said Haleigh's former stepmother, Misty Croslin, could be in trouble. Misty was brought to the scene from jail where's she's being held on drug charges. She was the last person known to see the girl alive.

During a jailhouse call, Misty pointed the finger at one of her relatives. She claimed her cousin, Joe Overstreet, took Haleigh, but he says that’s lie.

Overstreet was in Putnam County when Haleigh disappeared, but left for Tennessee soon after.

Investigators won't say exactly what they've found or what evidence they have, but they are moving closer to an arrest.

Investigators in Putnam County made a major announcement late Thursday afternoon. Detectives in the case of missing girl Haleigh Cummings said they officially believe the child has been killed.

"Info has been received that leads them to believe Haleigh Cummings is likely deceased," Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy said during a news conference.

"The investigative team has identified persons of interest in this case," Sheriff Hardy said. "People are starting to cooperate, that's why I've told people it's only a matter of time. It's a good thing. People are starting to talk."

The sheriff would not name who they suspect, only saying they suspect several people. He did say they have not found bones during the most recent searches, just a few items that could be part of the case.

"It's like looking for a needle in a haystack," Hardy said. "But we're willing to take the effort and time to look for the needle."

Officials were finishing the search Thursday evening.

Authorities Plan to Brief Public Today on Day 3 of Search for Haleigh Cummings

Updated: 4/15/2010 3:58:19 PM

Authorities plan to update the public this afternoon on the third day of the search for Haleigh Cummings at the St. Johns River.

A steady stream of investigators, dive teams and police officers drove to the dock. The number of people on the search Thursday morning numbered well over 30. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office once again sent its underwater search team, in addition to officers from Clay, St. Johns and Putnam counties.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement also sent its evidence truck.

At least 25 investigators came to the dock area at the end of Shell Harbour Road early yesterday. All police, and even people who live in the neighborhood, must check in and out at a security checkpoint.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement mobile crime lab also arrived.

The media isn't allowed down Shell Harbour Road, but the search is visible from docks down the river, and search boats have been patrolling the area near the dock. The search reached a level not seen in months Tuesday as an undisclosed tip led searchers to an area of the St. Johns River at a public boat ramp south of Satsuma.

Joe Overstreet is Misty Croslin's cousin. Overstreet, who lives in Tennessee, says he was in Florida when the little girl disappeared. The 20-year-old is speaking out about the allegations that he was involved in Haleigh's disappearance.

"Disgusted. I don't know. I can't say nothing about it. I want to say something, but I don’t know what to say," said Overstreet.

Overstreet's grandmother is the one who called deputies after her other grandson Tommy Croslin called her from the St. Johns County Jail on Sunday and told her that Overstreet took Haleigh from her home.
