Woman missing a year, family still has hope

April 16, 2010 9:14 AM

Priti Ashley Porter didn’t do drugs and wasn’t a big drinker.

She didn’t run with a rough crowd.

Tanya Davis said her daughter’s always been a good kid who stayed out of trouble, but Davis has been struggling to deal with her daughter’s disappearance.

Two women who were both 22 at the time, Priti Porter and Jamie Fraley, are also still missing.

An extreme amount of effort has gone into the investigations that could all use a boost now three to four years later, said investigators.

A large billboard along I-85 still asks for tips in Fraley’s disappearance.

“Fraley has been an intensive and exhaustive investigation but we try to do that with every case,” said Capt. Joe Ramey of Gaston County Police Department.

Tanya Davis has resigned herself to the idea that her daughter is likely dead... Ashley “Priti” Porter went missing five years ago when she climbed out her bedroom window. She was 22 years old at the time.

Her mother believes Porter had gone outside to talk with an ex-boyfriend. She never heard from or saw her daughter again. Davis does not believe her daughter ran away. She believes she went out of her window that night with intentions of coming back. Porter left her clothes, money and cellphone behind.

Police say they spoke with Porter’s ex-boyfriend, but he denied she was ever with him. Davis believes he knows what happened to her daughter but won’t say. Still, she’s holding out hope that one day she’ll know what happened.

Listed in a 2016 article as one of 7 people still missing from Gastonia:

Ashley “Priti” Porter - Porter, 22, left her mother’s home April 19, 2009, through a window with a removed screen. No personal items were taken. She was a 5-foot-3, 145-pound black female with black hair and brown eyes.

I wonder why a 22 year-old would sneak out a bedroom window, as opposed to walking out the front door? Very strange.

Per her Charley Project entry, her parents believe she snuck out of the window in order to secretly see an ex-boyfriend they disapproved of. Her parents believed he was abusive toward Priti and wouldn’t allow him to come to the house. They think he may have gone to her window late at night, knowing he couldn’t just knock at the front door, and lured her out.

Details of Disappearance

Porter was last seen in Gastonia, North Carolina on the evening of April 19, 2009. She lived with her mother and stepfather on Windy Hill Drive. That day after dinner, Porter spent time on the internet and then went to speak to a neighbor. At 10:00 p.m. she came home and told her mother goodnight.

The next morning, her mother wanted to get a coat out of Porter's closet and knocked on her bedroom door, which was locked. When she got no answer, she had Porter's stepfather open the door, and they found the bedroom window screen missing and Porter gone. She has never been heard from again, and all her belongings, including her purse, cellular phone, clothes and money, were left behind.

Porter's mother believes she climbed out her bedroom window that night to speak to someone, and planned to return home within a short time. She didn't report her daughter missing until April 27, because she believed Porter was probably with friends.

According to Porter's family, one of her ex-boyfriends was abusive and wasn't welcome at the house as a result; Porter's mother speculated that he, knowing the family wouldn't let him in if he knocked on the front door, came to Porter's window on the night of her disappearance and got her to leave with him. This person has not been identified and it's unclear if he was involved in Porter's case.

Porter graduated from Ashbrook High School in 2007 and worked manufacturing jobs afterwards. Her family stated she didn't use drugs or drink much alcohol at the time of her disappearance, and had never been in trouble with the law. Little information is available in her disappearance, but foul play is suspected.
