Gresham couple arrested in death of 5-year-old girl

"Gresham police arrested a man and his live-in girlfriend Friday in the suspicious death of his 5-year-old daughter earlier this week.

After officers interviewed the family and associates, they arrested Christopher A. Rosillo and Guadalupe Quintero, both 23, of Gresham on accusations of murder, said Sgt. Rick Wilson, a Gresham Police Department spokesman.

Police were dispatched shortly before noon Tuesday to the 400 block of Southeast 169th Avenue, where they found the girl, identified as Oleander Labier, unconscious and not breathing.

An ambulance took the girl to Portland Adventist Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Multnomah County medical examiner's office deemed the death "suspicious" and conducted an autopsy. The East Metro Major Crimes Team and the Multi-Agency Child Abuse Team were activated to investigate.

The autopsy and the investigation determined that the girl's death resulted from "homicidal violence," Wilson said......"

and

"He'd [ETA: a neighbor] heard recently that the 5-year-old was sick.

"It's just sad," he said. "She was a beautiful girl -- dark hair, dark eyes. This is tragic."

Police on Friday arrested the girlfriend of the father of a five-year-old Gresham girl who died Tuesday afternoon.

Detectives arrested 23-year old Guadalupe Quintero, a woman police said was a long-time live-in fiance of the father, who was not identified.

Wilson said the investigation was continuing, and more arrests were possible.

That's just wrong, Izz.

Dying by "homicidal violence" is something nobody should ever have to suffer let alone a five year old. I wonder how the three year old is? The 11 month old?

More arrests? Unbelievable.

Looking at the "soon to be stepmother's" expression in her mug shot is enough to make me want to high five her in the face.

I think any more would get me sent to time out land.

Indictment alleges years of abuse led to death of 5-year-old Gresham girl

"A Multnomah County grand jury has indicted a Gresham couple with murder by abuse charges in the death of a 5-year-old girl.

The indictment suggests the girl, Oleander Labier, died from a lengthy pattern of assault, neglect, and maltreatment that stretched for more than three years.

Christopher A. Rosillo, 23, and Guadalupe Quintero, also 23, of Gresham were arrested Friday after Gresham police were sent to their home on April 13, where they found the girl, Oleander Labier, unconscious and not breathing. Labier was Rosillo's daughter.

An ambulance took the girl to Portland Adventist Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead on arrival....."

and

"Rosillo's other children, ages 3 years and 11 months, were removed from the home and placed in protective custody. Quintero, voted Miss Teen Clackamas County in 2006, was the mother of the younger two children, but not Labier.

SNIPPED..................................................................

Former Beauty Queen Accused of Murder
A family member of Quintero's, who asked not to be named, told KATU that they had called the state's Department of Human Services "at least twice to report that the girl was being abused."

Another neighbor told KATU that the little girl was so fragile they saw her wearing a feeding tube from time to time

:( RIP sweet Oleander. May your abusers have to face their crime against you to the fullest extent of the law.

i disagree. the people who inflict 'homicidal violence' on children desreve it tenfold themselves.

Another case where DHS was involved and couldn't/wouldn't help a child. :( It is so sad to read that someone tried to get her help and they were not heard.

Finally, an update on this sad sad case. Please note that the description of Oleander's injuries is very disturbing and graphic:

Former Clackamas County pageant queen pleads guilty to beating and helping kill 5-year-old Gresham girl

"A 24-year-old Gresham woman was sentenced to 20 years in prison today after pleading guilty to “making it easy” for her boyfriend to allegedly torture to death his 5-year-old daughter over the course of years. Guadalupe Quintero also admitted to beating the girl, Oleander Labier, with a belt on three different occasions. Someone in the home called 9-1-1. Police arrived at the couple’s home last April 13 to find Oleander unconscious and not breathing. Her bones were broken from head to toe, and authorities say she was starving. She weighed 28 pounds.

An ambulance rushed her to Portland Adventist Medical Center, but she was pronounced dead on arrival. Quintero and the girl’s father, Christopher Andrew Rosillo, 24, were charged with murder, for torture and neglect that authorities said stretched back three years..."

and

"...Christopher Rosillo is scheduled to plea to a charge of murder by torture and abuse later this week. Under Oregon sentencing guidelines, he would get life in prison with the possibility of release after 25 years. More details of the abuse Oleander suffered will be available after his sentencing. Authorities have described the child-abuse case as one of the worst they’ve seen in Multnomah County...."

Gresham dad pleads guilty to torturing his 5-year-old daughter to death

"A 24-year-old Gresham father who tortured to death his 5-year-old daughter pleaded guilty to murder by abuse this afternoon. Christopher Andrew Rosillo is scheduled to be sentenced in late April to life in prison with the possibility of walking free after 25 years. Rosillo didn’t speak, except to answer Judge Michael McShane’s procedural questions before a packed courtroom of relatives and onlookers. He then admitted to causing the death of Oleander Labier on April 13, after three years of torture. He also pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal mistreatment for breaking her rib and femur, beating her with a belt in two separate instances and damaging her intestines...."

and

"....the severely malnourished girl weighed 28 pounds, and her eyes were noticeably sunken into her face. She had multiple broken ribs, some broken more than once. Her femur was broken multiple times. Her internal organs were scarred. And her body was covered in bruises, scrapes and gouges from a rod-shaped object....."

and

"....Oleander couldn’t eat solid foods as a baby, so a feeding tube was installed. But she hadn’t needed the feeding tube in the one to 1½ years before her death. A week before her death, the feeding tube came out and the couple put a bandage over the hole. The couple said Oleander had been vomiting in the week before her death — including vomiting blood that day. Someone from the home at *advertiser censored* S.E. 169th Avenue called 9-1-1 on April 13, but Oleander was already unconscious and not breathing when police arrived. She was pronounced dead at the hospital. In court papers, police quoted Rosillo as saying “I have anger problems” and “I do spank her. And sometimes I take it overboard a little bit..."

As appalled as I am at this couple's torture and murder of this child, I have to wonder where the support system was. This child surely qualified for services. Were they cut when she began eating on her own or were they refused? This child should have been in an early intervention preschool and should have been followed by a feeding specialist. When and if the child didn't show up for appointments, there should have been follow-ups. And who else in that home, failed to raise the red flag? It's a sad day for Oregonians. Our most vulnerable seem to have lost their safety net.

A blog post about the case. I'm still looking for an exposé on just what wrong for this child, concerning DHS/WIC and Early Intervention.

Just to be clear, as many readers seem to be confused, Oleander was Rosillo's child. I've not heard about her mother. Quintero was Rosillo's girlfriend and mother to his other children.

http://www.oregonlive.com/gresham/index.ssf/2011/03/former_miss_teen_clackamas_cou.html

"....The couple had two children together, who were 11 months and 3 years old at the time of their half-sister’s death. Neither one of those younger children were abused. They were taken into state custody...."

New details released: Gresham dad who was sentenced to life in prison for torturing to death his daughter was arrested wearing bloody belt

Guadalupe Quintero — Rosillo’s long-time girlfriend and mother to his two younger children — pleaded guilty to manslaughter and criminal mistreatment last month for helping torture Oleander and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The medical examiner’s office determined she died from battered child syndrome due to severe malnutrition and beatings. She weighed just 28 pounds. Bruises, scrapes and gouges — from a rod-shaped object — covered her from head to toe. Her ribs were broken and her femur was broken in multiple places. A medical examiner found “a coffee-ground-type purge” in her mouth, indicating that the girl had digested blood, then regurgitated it.

How horrible!! RIP Oleander :(

Deputy district attorney Nathan Vasquez said Oleander’s death was preventable. His office has investigated whether he could prosecute family members who knew of the abuse, but no charges have been filed.

Little Oleander was failed by so many! :(

Yes, little Oleander was totally failed by all the citizens of Oregon. I honestly do NOT know what the answer is as there are just not nearly enough foster parents available in our state right now. I know what sorts of guidelines that social workers must follow but common sense tells me that they must be informed by the fact that there's just no where to send children such as this little one. She suffered from trauma and feeding challenges and there's simply not enough families to go around. Workers are forced to pick and choose.

I'm trying very hard not to "preach" but foster parents who serve out of altruism burn out within a year. Those that require an appropriate stipend and services are demonized by so many for "doing it for the money". Other countries have tried the institutional route but that has been studied here in the states and the studies show that it's a horrid failure. Children need families...well trained and well supported. JMO.

Fly high, Oleander.....

What tragic words..."and yet they kept quiet"

http://www.oregonlive.com/politics/index.ssf/2011/08/records_show_family_members_kn.html

Records show some family members knew 5-year-old Oleander Labier was being abused but didn't act
August 22, 2011

"Her grandmother predicted a tragic end for the 5-year-old girl who went by the nickname "Little Andie. "A long time ago I said, 'I just have a feeling something is going to happen to Little Andie,'" MT told Gresham police on April 13, 2010, the day after Oleander Labier died from starvation and chronic abuse. MT wasn't the only member of the family who either saw or strongly suspected what the little brown-eyed girl endured. Other relatives knew the girl's bruises came from regular beatings. Some even said they saw Oleander's father force her to eat her own feces and vomit. And yet they kept quiet, according to 1,293 pages of records released to The Oregonian Monday by the state Department of Human Services...."

and

"....The files in this case, mostly transcripts of police interviews, tell the story of a tiny baby taken away from her drug-addicted mother only to die at the hands of her father and his long-time girlfriend. They also tell a story experts say is not uncommon: People know a child is abused but fail to report it...."
