The mother of an 8-day-old infant was arrested Friday night and charged with an open count of murder after Santa Rosa deputies discovered the child's body in a wooded area off Congress Street north of U.S. 98.

Michelle Marie Vasquez, 34, was arrested about 10:15 p.m. and taken to Santa Rosa County Jail, where she was being held without bond, the Sheriff's Office said.

No additional information about how the child died, the child's gender or the circumstances surrounding the child's death was released by press time Friday night.

SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. (WALA) - Santa Rosa County Deputies say an infant's body was found in a wooded area in Gulf Breeze Friday evening. Authorities say the infant's mother, 34-year-old Michelle Marie Vasquez, has been taken into custody on an open count of murder.

The eight-day-old infant was discovered by deputies in a wooded area of Congress Street after being flagged down by the deceased infants grandfather.

The woman accused of killing her eight-day old baby told investigators that she killed her baby and that she didn’t want to burden her family.

In a report released today, Vasquez told investigators that she left her mother’s house in the 5800 block of Congress Street in Gulf Breeze Thursday because she was a burden. She fled to a wooded area near the house.

Vasquez said that she held her baby Madison Florez “really tight” to comfort the newborn child.

Zohn asked if Vasquez knew what would happen if she held a baby too tight.

“Die,” she answered.
