Not sure of the connection to Lachlan Cranswick? Lake Skaha is in the Okanagon area of British Columbia approx the same distance away from Ottawa Ontario as New York is to California :)

Chrysler found below rock bluff next to scenic lookout

By Doug Ward, Vancouver SunApril 27, 2010 1:12 AM

Divers who raised a wreck from Skaha Lake Sunday were startled to find a skull and a leg bone inside the rusted hulk of the '60s-era car.
The local RCMP detachment is now reviewing its missing persons files to solve the macabre mystery of who was in the car.
"I was in shock," said Kevin Asschoff, a diver with Penticton-based Oceantec Scuba diver, of the grisly discovery

I emailed the article about Barbara Hudspeth to Penticton RCMP. I imagine they would start their investigation with the VIN anyway, but this article says only a partial VIN was found:

Photo of the car (no remains are visible as far as I can tell). This article says it may be a 1964 Chrysler 300.

Maybe the powers that be should do more routine clean-ups in the bottom of lakes, ponds and rivers. It might solve a few old missing persons cases.

No plates makes it sound like perhaps it wasn't just an innocent accident but someone might not have wanted the car identified? Suppose the plates could have come off in the water but they would be found somewhere near the car. It says the car is in bad shape. Maybe the plates came off in a collision on the road

FWIW this link says it was a child's skull (in the internet addy) but I'm not sure why. I can't find the information in the article, it just says they can't tell if it's a male or female. Then they go on to discuss how it might have been anyone traveling on that road but surely if it was immediately obvious that the skull belonged to a child it would be a small one who wouldn't have been traveling in a car on their own. Possibly the child in the link is just a web editor's mistake?

It says the car is from the early 70s.

Penticton RCMP say the car – a Chrysler from the early 1970s – likely plunged into the lake about 35 years ago from Highway 97. But there were likely no witnesses, added Sergeant Rick Dellebuur. He confirmed police found the skull and bones of one person, but can’t say if it was a man or woman.

The name Lachlan Cranswick came out of the original poster's signature, not necessarily connected to this case.

I do not believe Lachlan Cranswick is associated with this case. I have Lachlan in my sig line because I cannot get his disappearance out of my mind. I might remove it though as it is confusing, sorry.

I've often wondered just how many of our missing persons are at the bottom of waterways. Either accidentally or on purpose. Last year a woman was found in her car at the bottom of local lake. She had been missing since the 1950's.

Here is a comparison of the lake car to the Chrysler New Yorkers (1962 to 1965)

Based on the round tail lights, the rear quarterpanel, and the shape of the rear door, I think that the car pulled from the lake is 1963 or 1964. The red paint on the 1963 makes it hard to see the contours.

Geographically this is the only case I can find that makes any sense as a possibility via Doe.

This guy was moving from near Vancouver (250 miles away) to Kelowna (approximately 40 miles north of the body location).

His truck, which was loaded with his belongings, made it to Kelowna and was sold but he was never seen again. This happened in 1985 - but I guess the car could have been a beater when it was dumped as an easy way to transport the body and hide evidence.

It's a long shot but it's the only case on Doe I've found so far that's not from hundreds of miles away.

This is another remote possibility:

http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/2442dfbc.html

She was due to arrive in Calgary, traveling from Vancouver, but didn't show. The lake isn't on the obvious route for her to have taken but it's not a completely crazy route either. Of course, at age 18 in the late 60s, a relatively late model Chrysler New Yorker isn't the obvious vehicle for her and it's not stated how she would have been traveling - or even if it's known that she left.

This woman just showed up today in DoeNet.

The time period is consistent, but her circumstances of disappearance are a little inconsistent with her being in a motor vehicle, and Gitsegukla is about a 15-hour drive from Penticton.

Probably not her, but I'm putting it up here nevertheless.

I fully agree. Exactly what I was looking at.... I do think it looks like a 63 or 64. Maybe more so like a 63 based on what I can make out of the shape of the rear lights. It looks more round maybe? Maybe not. It would be great to have a pic of the car pulled from the lake from the car's rear view. Especially if we could make out the shape of those lights. And rear pics of the 63 and 64 version of the NY'r.
