Tywan Magee: 17-year-old accused of taking part in gang rape of 14-year-old at a Pascagoula, Miss. apartment complex.

PASCAGOULA -- A 14-year-old girl was raped Tuesday night behind an apartment complex in east Pascagoula and 5 males ranging in age from 15 to 18 were arrested, the city Police Department reported today.

Police responded to the River Reach Apartments about 8:15 p.m. after the victim and a 15-year-old female friend told the victim's parents about the attack, and the parents called police.

The parents took the victim to Singing River Hospital, where she was treated and released. Police would not say whether the girl or her friend knew the attackers.

Police said an investigation found that the girl was raped by two of the suspects as the others watched behind a building at 3000 Brazil Street, which is east of Chicot Street and south of Old Mobile Highway.

The 14-year-old and her friend were walking near the apartments when she was pulled to the rear of one of the buildings and raped by 17-year-old Tywan Magee of 4309 Scovel Ave. and 16-year-old Antonio Martin of 4420 Lynx, police said.

Demarius Deontae Fountain, 15, of 4315 Orchard Road, and Zyron Jefferson, 17, watched and taunted the victim, police said.

During the assault, 17-year-old Garry Thompson pulled the 15-year-old friend away from the victim when she tried to intervene, authorities said.

Police Lt. Davy Davis said a crime like this in Pascagoula is rare. "I don't think we've ever dealt with a gang rape like this to my knowledge, and I've been here for 25 years," Davis said.

He said the apartment complex where the incident occurred is

not particularly known for crime, and that the department had recently stepped up patrols in the area after residents complained about increased foot traffic. "We actually have a fairly large amount of police presence there, but we didn't know what was going on behind the buildings."

The suspects are being held at the city jail pending a bond hearing, when they will be transported to the Jackson County Adult Detention Center if the judge finds enough information to bind them over to a grand jury.

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the department's Criminal Investigation Division at 228-938-6684.
