Police activity was going on for more than three hours, and investigators said they were taking the situation seriously.
According to mutiple sources, however, the situation was still fluid.
Conflicting reports were coming in to police officials as to what exactly was suspicious about the vehicle and its contents.
Some reports noted the vehicle was on fire. Others noted it contained metal boxes.
According to one account, the vehicle was driven into Times Square, was left with its flashers on and then the driver left.
After the fire in the vehicle was reported at around 6:35 p.m., police closed off an area in Times Square near 44th Street and 7th Avenue.

Reuters quoted a New York Fire Department official as saying the vehicle was found to contain explosives, gasoline, propane and burned wires. The officer, who did not give his name because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said a man was seen fleeing the vehicle.

TS is always crawling with heavy police presence that are heavily armed... bravo to the officer that was on top of this.

Gosh it seem to me there something like that last week..

I feel for New Yorkers - must be difficult to ever let your guard down, you know?

The public in that area carries cell phones and someone in that area was probably carrying a cell phone in that area at the time. If le is contacted , they will look at it and investigate it. They know that someone, saw something.

If you're looking at FOX tonite, and you think you have something, call LE tonite.............you may have something important.

OK not word, for word, but that was what they were trying to say, imo.

IF you could POSSIBLY have been in the area, you MAY have seen something IMPORTANT! Call LE.
