Foul play is not a theory at this point in the investigations into two missing people in the Ottawa Valley. OPP are working on the theory that 51-year-old Tina Smithson may have left her home near Pakenham January 26th and fallen through the ice in a nearby creek. Meanwhile a similar theory is being suggested in the disappearence of 41-year-old Lachlan Cranswick who vanished after leaving work at AECL to return to his Deep River home on January 18th. The active searches for both have been suspended. According to Deep River Police Chief Michael Ueltzhoffer, he will not rule out a further search this spring, depending on what the continuing investigation finds.

(If indeed they have not conducted a further search in Spring, then does that mean something was found in the"continuing investigation" ?!)

Uh. ok. Lachlan left his home close to midnight and in confusion, dropped himself into the river...Sure. Very convincing. There are many signs and clues that would lead one to believe this. Sure. Uh huh. OK.

    MOO

ETA - Are the authorities actually investigating this case or are they all too busy doing something else? (Difficult to imagine what else might be going on but who knows....)

    Again - jmo

Is it possible that they may just be waiting for the SUMMER? Spring has sprung and is soon passing. What are they doing?

    Just askin'...

I'm hoping that LE does know more than they are saying and that is why they aren't searching the river. At least not that we know of, maybe safetytwin could answer this.

I'm feeling quite frustrated at the deafening silence surrounding Lachlan's disappearance. I keep wondering about a few things,

-was any evidence found on his computer that he was part of any online dating sites? I know, I know, I keep asking that but I would really like to have the answer to this, it's been haunting me!

-what was he working on in the weeks prior to his disappearance

-did anyone think to look for him after he missed his weekly curling or were they expecting him to be away?

-has LE even looked at the possibility that RW was involved?

-are there any crazy lonely ladies in DR who might have him locked in the basement? Sorry, but this would be a happier ending than most other possibilities

-did the Curling Club deposit actually make it to the bank? I wonder if that is what he went out for, to drop it in the night deposit.

Well, there's at least one appallingly bad driver in DR who is female. She went on a bizarre rampage through the town and took out some Christmas decorations. That's it. Nothing more that I could find. Um, she land in court for damaging a vacant house once, too:

    Layoffs at AECL

    http://www.magma.ca/~drcanrt/100602layoffs.html

Will it end up like Whiteshell?

Meanwhile, it looks like Lachlan Cranswick is no longer shown on the town's website:

    He's still here:

I went to interceder and typed in LC name and it only brought this video up. No new articles on him at all. He uploaded it Dec. 31/09. If you follow it to You Tube there are many more. Video at link. You may have seen them, if so sorry for reposting.

There was a helicopter search of the river on April 20th, and also about a month before that when the ice was starting to break up. Apparently there was a boat search too, once the river was clear in mid-April.

The river was the easy and obvious explanation, and had to be searched for the sake of completeness, but IMO it was and is a waste of time and taxpayer's money. Similarly the snowmobile search of the ski trails. I suspect that the interval between LC's disappearance and the search by the canine unit was long enough (at least a week) for any scent to get washed away or covered by other things.

The search that should have been done earlier in the spring, and wasn't, was a ground search in the bush between the trails at the east end of town. There are many acres of thick bush where anything could be hidden, and some of that bush is no more than a 15 minute walk from LC's house.

There have been zero rumours about any other activity by LE, either local or at higher levels. While the 'missing' notice may have disappeared from the DR website, it is still posted at various businesses around town, and also in various places at the CR labs.

Thanks so much safetytwin! Do you know if anyone has searched the bush yet? You're right, it would have been so much easier in the early spring before the leaves came out. I find it quite disheartening that there is no talk about activity by LE. Usually if they were working on something people in the area would have a sense of it. I suppose they could be investigating in other areas though. I wish we had some little thing to go on. He can't have just vanished.

Lachlan is still on the town's website, in the same Home page as before, except now it is at the bottom of the page (scroll all the way down).
