DANBURY -- Police are investigating the disappearance of a 55-year-old Danbury woman who was last seen nearly a month ago.

Ana Barros, who lived in an apartment on Housman Street, was reported missing by her niece on Friday, and information developed by detectives during the course of the investigation is "of a suspicious nature," Detective Lt. Thomas Michael said Thursday.

Local and state police searched part of Rogers Park, not far from Barros' home, Wednesday night. Nothing was found, but a state trooper and police dog were searching the area of the Ives House in the park Thursday morning.

Barros was last seen on May 11, Michael said.

She was described as a white female with blonde hair, approximately 5-feet, 5-inches tall, and weighs 170 pounds.

Anyone who may think they have any information regarding this missing person case is asked to call police at 203-797-4662.

Rest in Peace Ana.

It could be family. Ana lived with her sister, bil, and their family for 30 years in an apartment in this house. The family goes to Portugal every year and Ana normally goes too, however this year she didn't go. The nephew joined the family abroad 2 weeks after the family left. A niece reported her missing about 2 weeks after she had last saw Ana on 5/11. Most everyone else thought Ana had gone with the family, thus the lack of concern, jmo. A neighbor stated that the bil had the home up for sale, but the deal fell through just before they left for Portugal. Ana's place of employment has had no comment. Ana's car was found abandoned at a local park.

It will be interesting to see who all had access to her, the home, and whose alibis can and cannot be substantiated.

Barros, who worked for years at Fairfield Processing Corp. on Rose Hill Avenue, lived with her sister, Maria Costa, and Costa's husband, Gaspar, who are currently in Portugal. The Costa's son, Danny, who also lived there, left for Portugal about two weeks ago, neighbors said.

They described Barros, who never married and had no children, as someone who was pleasant but generally kept to herself.

The victim had been stabbed multiple times, according to an autopsy performed Monday by the state medical examiner in Farmington.

Barros, who lived alone in an apartment of the house, which is owned by her sister and her sister's husband, was reported missing by a niece May 28. The niece last saw her alive May 11, police said.

The homeowners, Maria and Gaspar Costa, and their son, Danny, are in Portugal. Neighbors said the parents have been there for several months, and their son joined them a few weeks ago, shortly before Barros was reported missing.

Michael said investigators "are working on developing a person of interest" in the homicide, but he stopped short of calling the person -- whom he declined to identify --as a suspect in the homicide.

I hope there is justice for Ana, she seemed to live a simple, private life and not bother anyone.

it has to be someone within the house/family as it seems she didn't socialize much other than work. the fact she didn't is probably why no one knew she was missing, they all thought she went with family to portugal.

From October 2010:

An arrest warrant has been issued in state Superior Court in Danbury for 40-year-old Daniel Costa, charging him in the May stabbing death of his aunt, Ana Barros.

Authorities believe that Costa is in Portugal, where he went in May, three days before another relative reported Barros missing and two weeks before her body was found buried beneath a newly poured concrete floor in the basement of the Housman Street apartment house where they both lived... Another source familiar with the case said Costa tried unsuccessfully to withdraw money from his aunt's bank account before leaving the country...

Court and city records indicate that Costa obtained a $100,000 mortgage on the property in September 2007, and another $345,000 loan on it two months later. The house is valued at $435,000, according to the city assessor. Before leaving the country, Costa applied for a state program designed to avoid foreclosure, but failed to show up for the mediation session at state Superior Court in Danbury.
