Judge 'finds defendant food'
A judge reportedly stopped a sex trial so he could go out and find a sandwich for the defendant.
The Mirror says Recorder Jeremy Carter-Manning interrupted the trial of Violito Villanueva after hearing that the Filipino had not eaten anything since 8am because he could not understand the court menu.
The judge marched off in his wig and gown to cobble together a sandwich and juice from the court kitchens after an usher had returned from the canteen empty-handed because it was closed.
Carter-Manning told lawyers at Guildford Crown Court: "This is hands-on judiciary. I will not allow a defendant not to eat."
The jury were not present, as the incident happened during legal arguments.
Villanueva was later convicted of assaulting and falsely imprisoning a 21-year-old victim.
