OR - William Leverence for child pornography, Tualatin, 2010

So how many folk here would be willing to allow a "housemate" to remain in your home (especially with being a mayor and under public scutiny) when that housemate is being investigated for possession of child porn? Raise your hands.

I didn't think so. I've got a few questions. Most are covered by the comments following this article.

FWIW, Tualatin is a very nice suburb just south of Portland, OR.

Tualatin, OR mayor's housemate arrested on child-pornography charges

"A child-pornography investigation that began 18 months ago with the search of Tualatin Mayor Lou Ogden's home turned into a criminal case Tuesday as authorities arrested Ogden's housemate on 20 felony charges tied to possession of child pornography.

Law enforcement arrested William Dana Leverence, 48, at his Northeast Portland job site following his indictment this month by a Washington County grand jury. Authorities said Ogden did not know of the alleged criminal conduct until their Dec. 4, 2008, search. Leverence continued to live at Ogden's home through his arrest today....."

    and

"....[ETA; Mayor] Ogden said he did not ask Leverence to move out after authorities searched his home. Ogden said he did not know of Leverence's arrest until contacted by a reporter.

"I think someone's innocent until proven guilty," Ogden said Tuesday about the lengthy gap in the investigation. "I didn't know what's on his computer. That was the last I ever heard of it."

    and

"....Ogden said he thought he knew Leverence "very well," noting that he has met Leverence's children and pointed to their experiences running together during Hood to Coast relays......."

Why does the Mayor have a roommate? How old are these people?!?!

What poor judgement from an elected official! Fine if the Mayor chooses to believe this sicko is innocent but you'd think to save face he'd keep that opinion to himself and wouldve had him move out.Guess he's not interested in re-election.
I REALLY question the mayor-is he being looked into?Makes you wonder what the deal is with these two....

ITA, Vespaelf. It sounds like the mayor has a number of "housemates". In reading the article and the comments, it seems that he decided to stay in his family home after his divorce of 15 years ago. To keep his finances low, he has taken in housemates. I can accept this to a certain degree. I do have some observations, however. Housemates are far more typical with college age kids. The mayor has owned this home for at least 15 years which leads me to believe that he purchased it before Portland had their huge real estate boom. That would mean that his payments are reasonably low and not inflated as they would have been had he purchased the home five or so years ago.

I also have to wonder about the appropriateness of a mayor living in such a setting. Is that elitist of me? Possibly. If the man is gay, it certainly wouldn't be much of an issue in Oregon. Being in the closet and living a sham, however, would.

I still cannot wrap my mind around allowing a renter (note, never referred to as a good friend) with an ongoing criminal investigation to remain in your home, especially when you are the mayor. If I lived in Tualatin, I'd have some very pointed questions for the mayor.

I don't live in Tualatin and I still have questions.

No you are NOT being an elitist! I too want my mayors to be 'grown up' and #1 not live with multiple roommates(what is this?a frat house?) and #2 NOT knowingly associate with criminals/those under criminal investigation!
Not only does it make one wonder about his judgement/mental status but also about what skeletons HE may have.
The whole thing is weird & seems inappropriate & I would love follow ups on this.

Thank you, Vespaelf, as I was very afraid that I was over-reacting to this. I fully understand that people can live very decent and upstanding lives in communal homes (we have several in Ashland) but this set-up seems different. I'm glad that you called it what it sounds like....a frat house.

And Tualatin is not some dinky little suburb. It has approximately 30,000 people and the median income for males is around $60,000. There is a good deal of upscale retail and industry there. If I lived in the town, I would expect a little more of my highest elected official. One wonders what the mayor's connection is with his police force. Have they not mentioned to him how this looks?

Being that Mr. Leverence, the man arrested, is 48 and Mayor Ogden said that he has rented to him for five years, one must ask just how old Leverence's children were when the Mayor met them or possibly entertained them at the home.

Not for nothing but Leverence has lived in three towns in Oregon. Lived in Stockton, CA and LA, and also Vancouver, Washington.

What the heck is up with all this?

I found a couple of adult children who would not have been children five years ago. One has some ummm...unusual interests.

We can't link to children (they are adults now) or the uninvolved but if you will check out the last name of the arrested man within a 100 miles of Portland on MS, I think you'll figure it out.

A mid-twenty-something person connected to Leverence concerns me as this person is single and has five little ones. Lots of photos of the little ones--beautiful children.

But I don't care for babies being called sexy.

WOW! I am just as concerned as you.......he has ALOT going on there and the association with a certain group/lifestyle(one that you have highlighted in the past)really has me wondering..........Call me crazy but I wouldnt allow anyone to refer to my kids(or anybodys I knew) as 'sexy' & if someone had referred to any child under 18 as "sexy" let's just say it would be investigated kwim?

There's a worrisome comment here posted at 9:34 am on July 2nd. The comment includes the subject of "small children visiting in the home". I wonder if this is a friend or a neighbor? Hopefully LE will follow up on that issue.

There's also a comment about Ogden being an "absentee" mayor. Apparently he travels frequently and was not at home at the time of the initial investigation nor the arrest per a poster. Hmmm.

Tualatin Mayor Lou Ogden running for fifth term despite housemate's child porn case

"About a dozen current and former elected officials offered support to Tualatin Mayor Lou Ogden as he announced his candidacy for a fifth mayoral term Wednesday -- the same day his housemate faced child-pornography charges in a Washington County courtroom...."

    and

"...Ogden’s campaign manager released a written statement from Ogden saying he decided to kick Leverence out of his Tualatin home.

Ogden first learned of the allegations against Leverence on Dec. 4, 2008, but did not ask Leverence to leave because, he said, everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Leverence continued to live at Ogden’s home through Tuesday, when Leverence was arrested...."

more at link and some interesting comments

If I didn't worry about these other guys before, I do now!! Also, please read the Mayor's written statement about the arrest very carefully.

"I'm not going to just arbitrarily assume someone's doing bad stuff," Ogden said of his conversation with Leverence. "But I did tell him, 'If you're doing anything bad, don't do it in my house.'"

    BBM

....uummm, seriously Mr. Mayor, that's all you're worried about???????!!!!!! Don't do it in my house!!!!
Say what you mean, mean what you say, but don't say it mean.

What makes me think that this story is not over yet? I have to wonder what favors were called into play in order to garner the support of other mayors and officials especially when one looks at the absolute inanity of the comment that Lovejac posted. Are these officials convincing anyone that they are using logic to look at this situation. He's the Mayor, for pity's sake. Does he not care about the children of his town...for all children?

If I lived in Tualatin, I not only would be appalled by Ogden's audacity to choose to run again but I'd be calling for his resignation for not putting the safety of children first. He should be falling all over himself with apologies for his initial misguided response.

Instead, he's circling the wagons and getting defensive.
