Elane Springs, 49, accidentally sat on the baby as she was sleeping on the couch on Sept. 18, 2008. Police said Springs didn't immediately notice she was sitting on the baby, then got up and didn't call 911.

Instead, police said the woman changed the baby's clothes and then called her son about an hour later. Police said she left a message asking her son to tell his sister, who was the baby's mother, that the baby had died.

WTH????

If this was an accident I will eat my hat. You cannot accidentally sit on a baby and not know it. Baloney! Involuntary manslaughter my big toe.

FWIW I absolutely agree and I love how you put it.

I was wondering about that last night. The only way I could see NOT knowing you have sat on a baby is if you are really obese.

What makes my blood boil is the fact that she called and left a message for her son to tell her daughter that the baby was dead!!! Seriously?????? THAT is insane. (I wonder if the son saved the phone message from her)

while looking for a pic of the grandmother, I came across this article.

Springs laid the girl, Tyjahe, on her sofa and later accidentally sat on her, officials allege.

"When she stood up, she realized that she had been sitting on the victim. She failed in her attempts to revive Tyjahe and said she could see that the victim wasn't breathing and was lifeless," police said.

Springs didn't call 911 but tried to revive the baby by patting her with water, police said.

She told detectives she laid Tyjahe on the couch about 10:20 p.m. the night before so she could go to sleep and used a pillow from her bedroom to keep the baby from falling off the couch. Ms. Springs said she did some housework until she became tired, then went into the living room and sat on the couch next to the baby, homicide Detective James McGee wrote in a sworn affidavit.

Ms. Springs sat on the couch until 3 a.m., then got up to use the bathroom.

"When she stood up, she realized that she had been sitting on the victim," police wrote. She failed in her attempts to revive Tyjahe and said "she could see that the victim wasn't breathing and was lifeless," but police said she never called 911.

Instead, she dressed the baby in a long-sleeved T-shirt, placed her in a car seat and sat her on the living room table. Police said she stripped the pillow cases from the couch cushions before calling her son an hour later.

WTH? And this occurred in 2008? It took them this long to charge her? Egads, this is insanity.

2 years is absolutely pitiful. What kind of incompetent idiots are these investigators?

UPDATE

A Homewood woman pleaded guilty this morning to involuntary manslaughter for accidentally sitting on and smothering her 1-month-old granddaughter in 2008.

Elane L. Springs, 50, was sentenced to two years probation by Allegheny County Judge Jill Rangos, who said she considered the woman's history of working and raising her family, as well as her lack of a prior criminal record
