State puts weight in mother's 911 calls

<snipped>
Beyond the mounds of evidence collected in the Casey Anthony murder case and the volumes of paperwork filed in court, the series of 911 calls Cindy Anthony made nearly two years ago remain central to the case against her daughter.

After all, the calls represent the very genesis of this case. One captures Cindy Anthony's frantic first moments upon learning of her granddaughter's monthlong disappearance. In it, Cindy Anthony also describes the dead body smell in her daughter's car — something she may have to testify about this week.

But most important, according to legal experts and prosecutorial filings, the calls reveal Casey Anthony's earliest "fabrications" of what happened to 2-year-old Caylee Marie. In other words, the calls could help establish what the prosecution considers Casey Anthony's concocted story.

That's why prosecutors want two of the three July 15, 2008, calls admitted at trial. It also explains why defense attorneys have argued to keep the calls out, calling them "hearsay." On Thursday, both arguments will be made during a hearing largely devoted to this issue.

Orlando Sentinal - Hal Boedeker

Will there be a movie in the Casey Anthony case?

A savvy producer could use the public record and tell a riveting story. No money would ever need to go to any of the Anthonys.

The challenge would be telling the story, because in a Casey Anthony movie, the central character is a cipher. The mostly mum Casey is charged with first-degree murder in the death of daughter Caylee.

The better way to go would be to focus on Cindy Anthony, Casey’s mom, who has delivered the most dramatic moments in this headline-making case. It’s a role that would appeal to actresses of a certain age. Done the right way, the role could have Emmy written all over it.

Cindy’s moments include the 911 calls and her fiery deposition in the Zenaida Gonzalez defamation suit. Another big scene could unfold at a hearing this week when Cindy is questioned about the 911 calls.

All along the way, Cindy has been the more interesting figure than Casey. We see Cindy swimming with Caylee in home movies. We’ve seen Cindy arguing with protesters outside her home and waving a hammer. We’ve seen Cindy in TV interviews, sticking up for Casey and crying about Caylee. We saw Cindy at the memorial service. Cindy dined at the Ritz. Cindy keeps coming to court.

I wonder what Casey Anthony would make of Cindy becoming the star of “The Casey Anthony Story.”

Anthony Remains Jailed On 1st-Degree Murder Charges

POSTED: Monday, July 12, 2010

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The public could get more insight into Casey Anthony's defense strategy this week.

Last week, Anthony's defense team and the state attorney submitted a list of the pieces of evidence they want to inspect this week.

The list has not yet been made public because Judge Belvin Perry was out of the office. He returned on Monday and may release the inspection request soon.

Anthony's defense attorney said most the items on his list were collected in the woods near where Caylee Anthony's body was found.

The inspection process, which will be done with the help of a team of experts, is set to begin Wednesday.

Anthony, 24, is being held at the Orange County Jail on first-degree murder charges in her daughter's death. Caylee was 2 years old when she was reported missing in July 2008. Her remains were found in a wooded area near the Anthony family's east Orange County home in December 2008.

Casey Anthony's criminal defense team announced a veritable "dream team" of forensic and science experts headed to town this week to inspect evidence compiled by authorities in the murder case.

First up is Dr. Henry Lee, the well-known criminologist and pathologist often associated with the O.J. Simpson case, according to Casey Anthony attorney Jose Baez.

Also headed to town this week, he said, is Nicholas Petraco, an associate professor of chemistry and forensic science at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City.

Likewise, Dr. Tim Huntington, an assistant professor at Concordia University, Nebraska, and a board-certified entomologist, will be here for the inspections, Baez said. Forensic entomology applies the study of insects to a legal context to help establish times of death and post-mortem movement of bodies, Huntington has said, according to the Concordia University website.

"I am one of only 15 board-certified forensic entomologists, so we are a small pool of experts to draw from," Huntington said on the Concordia site.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- If attorneys in the case against Casey Anthony want to block a list of evidence from being released to the public, they must submit a new motion by 4:00pm Tuesday.

Last week, Casey's attorneys met the judge's deadline to turn over the list. The list is public record, but the defense did not file it with the clerk. Instead, it was sent it directly to the judge, who was on vacation.

Now, if either party wants to keep it private they must file a request by July 13 at 4:00pm; if a motion isn't filed, it will be released.
