Police ask for help in solving 2 missing persons cases

The first one was originally reported in May of 2004, when a mother filed a missing person report on her 8-month old son. She proceeded to tell police that in May of 2003 she had been arrested and later put in jail for a misdemeanor offense. When she was arrested her son was left in the custody of her husband. When she was released, she returned home to find her husband but no child. She was told the child was with her husband's parents in Brownfield, Texas.

About a month after her release, she went to Brownfield to pickup her son. When she arrived, she was told that her son was not there and had never been there. The mother then returned to Amarillo, where she notified police.

The boy is identified as Miguel Angel Nunez, an Hispanic male now 6-years-old. The mother has been granted full custody of Miguel.

The father, Robert Sanchez Nunez, 36, has told investigators the child was living with friends/relatives in Mexico. On two different occasions he even stated that he was bringing Miguel back to Amarillo, but failed to do so. Police say there have been several inconsistencies with the stories the father told investigators. Police believe Nunez may be living in Kansas at this time.

Child is Missing for Six Years

Amarillo authorities are hoping an age progression photo can lead them to a six year old boy who has been missing almost his entire life.

When an Amarillo woman returned home from a stint in jail six years ago she was expecting to find her husband and toddler son. Instead police say her husband revealed he had taken the boy to his parent's house in Brownfield.

But her in-laws said they were never caring for him. Police have been looking for six year old Miguel Angel Nunez who may now look like this, ever since.

I4G do you have any idea as to why he isn't listed on any of the missing children's websites?

If he is I can't find him.

Prayers that he is found and returned to his Mother soon.

Oh wow Summerbreeze! Thank you so much for the link.

AMARILLO, Texas -- Police say an infant boy's mummified body has been found stuffed in an ice chest stored in the attic of a Texas Panhandle home.

Amarillo Police Lt. Gary Trupe says renters of the house were installing a ceiling fan when they discovered the body in a small, tightly sealed plastic ice chest on Monday.

Authorities estimate the boy's age at 3 months to 1 year and that his body was in the attic five or six years.

The Amarillo Globe-News reports Friday that police are questioning a man in connection with the case.

Officers suspect the boy was Miguel Nunez, born in 2003 and missing since 2004. Nunez' family lived in the house about the time he disappeared.

Miguel Nunez lived at the house in Amarillo, Texas at the time his father Robert Nunez reported him missing.

Police have now arrested Mr Nunez on a traffic warrant in Borger, Texas and plan to initially charge him with perjury over information he gave to a court in 2009.

Police said the boy's body may have been in the esky since he was first reported missing in 2004.

I'd never heard of an Esky before and had to look it up - it's a cooler brand.

Police have identified the boy's father, Robert Nunez, as the primary and only suspect in the case.

After a three-day search, authorities arrested Nunez on a traffic warrant in Borger, Texas.

According to police, Nunez provided a false name and resisted arrest.

It may take up to six weeks before police have the results of the full autopsy, which should help determine how the child died and when.

DNA testing also will help confirm the identity of the tiny victim.

Police say father confessed to concealing son’s body

Police allege Robert Sanchez Nunez has confessed to concealing the body of his infant son in a container in the attic of the Amarillo home they lived in. In a recorded oral statement, Nunez said his son, Miguel Nunez “died while in his care in 2004 and acknowledged that he subsequently concealed the body of Miguel Nunez in a container,” according to an aggravated perjury charge filed today.

RIP BABY MIGUEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can I ask the obvious? Why didn't LE check the attic at the time or is it thought that the cooler was placed in the attic at a later time?

Poor little guy. Finally, he can be laid to rest.

I was wondering that exact same thing - I would think LE had investigated after relatives stated that baby Miguel was never left in their care.

Police now know how an infant's body ended up in an ice chest in the attic of an Amarillo home, thanks to the alleged confession of the boy's father.
Robert Sanchez Nunez, 36, told a detective Miguel Nunez died in 2004 while in his care, according to a criminal complaint filed Friday. The father also said he put the body in the attic of the home in the 1600 block of North Seminole Street, a neighborhood of tidy, modest homes in the northeast part of the city.

...An autopsy performed Tuesday was inconclusive.

Police are sending the well-preserved body to the University of North Texas for DNA testing to confirm its identity and for testing by an anthropologist to try to identify the cause of death, Trupe said. That process could take at least four weeks....

Prayers for Miguel's Mother.

The father had maintained through the years he had given the boy to an unknown couple or family members, according to the court filing. At one point he told Wheeler that Miguel was in Mexico.

"The defendant even stated to his probation officer that he had driven to El Paso and that he was going to pick up Miguel Nunez to return him to his mother," the filing states.
